“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world.” This inspirational saying by Malala Yousafzai helped my understanding of what has been happening in Pakistan and many other countries all over the world. It shows us how important the littlest things can be and how by ourselves, we can make an impact on the world. In the book, I am Malala, by Malala Yousafzai, Malala explained how as a child, she was denied education because of the Taliban (a group of terrorists) and she chose to do something about it: she spoke out against them. When they tried to retaliate, even more people joined her cause for justice. In a similar case, Arnold (Junior), in the book The absolute Diary of a Part TIme Indian, was a boy living on a North American Indian reservation (rez) where unlike Malala, he was able to go to school, but his schools were very bad. Mr. P, his teacher, told him that if he does not leave the res, that he will not get any further in life. He decided to transfer to Reardan, a school outside of the reservation, where he knows that it will not be easy. He faces discrimination and he is exposed to more and more of the terrible things that happen in the world. And even though we learn from him that living on an Indian reservation is not a walk in the park, and that even living there does not compare to going to school at Reardan. Unfortunately for these two characters, they have both faced hardships that have deeply affected their lives. These stories show that when someone is in an environment that makes them lose their innocence, sometimes they also lose faith in humanity; when that has happened to someone, they might want to stand up for the other people with similar struggles. Innocence is something that people are born with but it can be lost due to tragic circumstances. Because of the Taliban, Malala Yousafzai lost her innocence when the Taliban threatened her home. “Each day after school my brothers and I would race home and lock the doors. No more playing cricket in the alley. No more playing hide and seek in the street. No more candy from the sky.” (Malala, 57). Malala learned to be afraid of the Taliban. It began as an ordinary day in Mingora, Pakistan, for a young girl returning home from school on her school bus. Suddenly, a masked gunman rushed into the bus and shouted, “Who is Malala?” Her friends on the bus looked back at her, and in the blink of an eye she was shot on the left side of her face. This incident was the spark that ignited a call for change in education around the world. Malala Yousafzai was the face of this change. She made significant contributions to female education rights by being an education activist and urging children to speak out and fight for their rights. She forever changed the lives of Pakistani girls who today benefit from free education and resources with numerous schools around their country.

The Taliban staunchly opposed Malala’s fierce beliefs in the right for women to have an education and they did their best to silence her voice. Malala and the other women in the Swat Valley were forced to obey their oppressive regime and not gain an education. Despite the harsh climate against her Malala spoke up against this tyranny with the faith that she could cause a change for the better. Reading his narrative life, inspired me to think about how easy it is to go to school, and learn without any violence happen to me. I do not have to secretly read after I do my chores or ask for permission. He has inspired me to fully take in and appreciate the classrooms I get, the teachers who are there every day, and the help that is offered to me for free at the library and other institutions. Where she lived women/ girls were allowed to go to school, but not everyone believed that was a good thing. The Taliban had grown to large numbers, proclaiming their extreme beliefs onto people, one of them is that girls were not allowed to be educated. So schools had to be hidden in what looked like regular buildings, but as soon as the students walked in “that doorway was like a magical entrance to our own special world” (Yousafzai, 2013). School meant so much to these students that even if a large extremist group was threatening them, they still went

She has received many peace awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize. The Taliban outlawed education in Pakistan, where she lived, for all females in 2009. She continued to attend classes and speak out on her BBC blog, the radio, and was even in a documentary about her life in the middle east and going to school as a girl despite the new law. In early October of 2012, when Malala was 15, she became the victim of an attempted murder by a Taliban gunman. She was shot in the head on the bus ride home from school. She was rushed to the hospital and after being stabilized, she was moved to another hospital to remove the bullet. After her tragic personal experience, she became well known and used her newfound popularity to advocate for education in the middle east. This speech is just one example of the many speeches she gave to bring attention to the problem. She also asked many other influential people with a higher status to help her bring awareness to the cause. To understand Malala’s speech the reader needs to understand what her goal is, what rhetorical devices she uses to reach that goal and how effective the speech is. This speech is powerful, eye opening and deserves to be heard. She is addressing two audiences, one being the people that follow her same belief for education, some of those people would be at this convention and the other being the people that disagree with her purpose, like the Taliban. Yousafzai was in 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan, which used to be a popular tourist destination. As of now the region has been taken into control of the Taliban. Her father is also an anti- Taliban activist and educator. She, her father and tons of others just want thing to be like they used to. Where they had a safe neighborhood and didn't have to worry about violence. She delivered a speech riddled with excellent use of rhetoric to convey her argument. Malala’s whole purpose for her fight for education of the youth is so that it will stop future violence, She displays this purpose in her speech by using outward focus, compassion and personal experience to her audiences.
