As a person who has struggled with obesity for a long period of time, I have always found it hard to keep track of my daily calorie intake and what my intake level should be. Considering that not everyone is the same and that the calorie intake will vary from person to person. Therefore I never understood how to determine my personal calorie intake level. Now in days new tools have emerged and have helped people keep track of their health. But since I myself am not a very technological person I had no knowledge of what websites to use and which ones provided the best and most accurate information that I could rely on. When I signed up for this course, for me it's more than a course that I need for my major. This course for me is something that I truly need to be able to understand what's going on in my body and how I can prevent certain diseases and improve my current health condition. I truly believe that as time into this course goes by I will obtain much more knowledge than what I already know. During the beginning of the class, the first discussion topic gave me the opportunity to know that there are certain websites that I can use to help me keep track of what I eat and how much calories I should be consuming. If I would have known about these websites earlier in time, my life would have been much easier. For example, Choosemyplate.gov provided me with so much information that I will use especially when preparing my meals. Since I had gastric
This can be extremely useful for people wanting to make lifestyle changes regarding nutrition and fitness, especially those aiming to lose weight and become healthier overall.
The program helps RD’s insert their patient’s information and needs into a software that will evaluate what is best for that patient. It will tell people everything they need to be eating, give them a shopping list for the grocery store, and explain the recommended portion sizes. People will become aware of this software that can be available for them through a RD. Meal planning is important to RD’s, and this computer program gives them an opportunity to insure their patients are getting the best plan possible. People should consider this program both easily accessible and
I was able to download the PDF of the 2010 dietary guidelines and my diet is way off. First of all I do not watch what I eat. I just know that when I am hungry that I eat. And 95% of the time it eat something specific to what I have a taste for. Then I eat alot of it because its so good. But then I wont eat another meal again till the next day. I will a few snacks here and there if I feel hungry through out the rest of the day. I would have to say yes and no to benefiting from tools designed to evaluate and track the quality of your diet over time. I say yes because I need a plan. I need something that would guide me on calorie counting, when to eat, what to eat, how much is too much and how much is enough. I was thinking about getting
By making a diet plan for randy, I have seen the true importance of a daily caloric intake and how following the daily caloric intake makes a huge impact. I have been able to see the differences of a variety of diets and have been able to process the information to gain the most information of real life examples. Part of this project was also to complete the Task Question and Answer Page. This task also helped me understand many things about target heart rate, aerobic activity, how stress can affect health, and many other things. By knowing this information, I was also able to apply it to Randy's lifestyle, and change his diet for the best future outcome. Therefore by developing this information about health, caloric intake, and how it applies to real life, I have loved this project and hope i can perform many other projects like this in the future to come.
I hadn’t always wanted to become a dietician, but my love of helping others, my family’s encouragement, and my interest in nutrition has made me come to the conclusion that dietetics would be the ideal field for me. Through my own life experiences, I have seen that nutrition and exercise play a huge factor into the health of an individual. For this reason, I want to be able to assist others with their goals and hardships, in addition to,
My analysis of the NutritionCalc Plus is that I’m actually happy with the breakdown. I’m close to where I want to be with my goals of limiting my carbs, though I think I could do better. I don’t necessarily believe MyPlate.com is how I should manage my food intake. In generally, the only fruits I really like are more berries: strawberry and blueberries, oranges to an extent, but other than that, don’t care much for fruit. Veggies, I prefer raw. Carrots are my stress food when I fill under stress and feel like chewing on the inside of my cheek, I’ll put away from carrots instead. As fare as carbs are concerned, I’ve also begun eating the hamburger minus the bun. I find myself eating it much slower and feeling more satisfied in the end. Whereas
My own dad has type two diabetes and a few other major health issues and is always in need of someone with some credibility on nutrition to properly guide him especially when eating out. The nutritional courses I’ve selected seem like good ones to either help the elderly or to assist our local high school sports programs in developing better plans to increase
It not only breaks down just caloric intake that is required, but it also states the amount of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. Not only does it state what you should consume, but it also states what limit to keep certain things under like sodium, added sugar and saturated fats. If more Americans used this free service, in place by the government, then they would be less likely to overeat or be confused on what to eat or how to eat it. One of the problems with obesity is that it can lead to a binge eating disorder. Many obese people will feel shame with binge eating and less likely to seek help. Although with the right support system, they can receive the help that they need. Binge eaters should seek cognitive therapy to help resolve the base of the problem to resolve the obesity issue (Hobson, 2009). It is well-known that food provides emotional comfort. When a person is bored, lonely or sad they can occasionally seek the emotional comfort of food. It could be a snack in as little as an hour after dinner; this is not eating food to fulfill you, but to make you emotionally full (Taub-Dix, 2012). To avoid this type of situation, water should be drank along with the postponement of your snack for 20 minutes; if it is not an actual need for food the craving should pass (Taub-Dix, 2012).
Food intake gets recorded in a daily journal of meals and exercise. The planner then uses this information to calculate your calories consumed, nutrient intake and calories burned, so you know just how close you are sticking to your fitness goals.
Obesity in our society continues to grow at an alarming rate. America is the richest country but has the largest population of obese people in the world. “Nearly 36.5% of American’s are obese (Adult Obesity Facts).” It is important to note that obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of “30% or more” (The Socioeconomic Causes of Obesity). People become obese over times for many reasons like feeling there is less of a need to exercise and eat healthy. There are also more fast food selections, which lead to bad eating habits and so on. This causal argument will cover the topic of obesity, why it is important and how it has become major issue in America today. Obesity in America is due to many factors that include: lack of
Obesity is a prevalent condition in America that undeniably leads to a plethora of health complications, including heart disease, diabetes, and depression. However, while medical interventions can be useful for addressing obesity, treating it as a purely medical condition can decontextualize this growing issue. Additionally, it can support the use of ineffective but potentially harmful treatments by a group of disproportionately empowered medical professionals and industries, that are incentivized to maximize their profit. Obesity exists in the context of a society that moralizes eating habits and stigmatizes fat bodies, and the medicalization of obesity impacts not only those who are obese, but also those who become obsessed with avoiding obesity. Combatting obesity is hence a complex problem that should be treated with both medical and societal interventions, and a failure to do so will result in serious consequences.
Completing the food and liquid intake forms as well as the exercise log helped me deduce multiple conclusions on my well being. After looking at my results I wasn’t surprised to see that I didn’t burn enough calories, especially since I haven’t had to do much walking during my time at home. I also wasn’t surprised to see that I consumed too many carbs and a higher number of sugars than I was supposed to. However, I was surprised to see that I only consumed on average 32 of my allotted 48 grams of fat. This surprised me because I know that my diet isn’t always the healthiest so I assumed that I consumed more fat than was healthy for me. I was also surprised that in general I only consumed half of my 108 grams of daily protein. This surprised me because I try to consume meat with every meal I eat so I had assumed that my protein intake would be at ideal level. When I examined by cholesterol and fiber intakes it was interesting to see that they were about where they were supposed to be. Overall, some aspects of my diet were predictable while others were surprising, by understanding this I am able to better see which areas of my diet I need to work on.
During 2011-2014, over one-third of adults in America had obesity (Ogden, et al. 1). Politicians and tax researchers have come up with a plan to reduce the prevalence of obesity, by implementing an excise tax on items containing an excessive amount sugars. On average, sugar adds almost two-hundred kilocalories to a person’s diet, and these sugars provide no nutritional value (Brownell, et al. 1599). Type two diabetes and obesity link to consumption of sugary beverages, which is a reason they are a target. There is a debate about how the United States should handle the recent rise in obesity. Some Democratic legislators across the country propose an excise tax on items containing sugar. Opponents of the excise tax believe people will naturally stop drinking sodas because they will become educated about the effects of the sugars over time. In contrast, proponents believe the excise tax is more feasible than waiting for citizens to learn about the effects of a high sugar diet. Moreover, the tax would be beneficial to the obesity epidemic by encouraging consumers to buy the healthier options, decreasing the cost of Medicare and Medicaid, and investing the revenue in programs that are proven to help people with obesity.
The exploration of the government sponsored website, choosemyplate.gov was enlightening and informational. This webpage gives detailed information on the appropriate diet for someone who is conscious about health and wellness. The diet that is suggested is based on one that is conducive to someone who is a risk for heart disease. The suggestions made by the website emphasis the importance of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein. The ‘choose my plate’ logo suggest that half of the daily calorie intake should come from fruits and vegetables. The website strives to be a user friendly as a government sponsored website can be; super tracker is an option allowing for users to track their calorie intake (eating) and output (exercise). This allows for anyone with access to the internet to track their net intake of nutrients. There are many reports that will analyze what nutrients are being neglected or over eaten. While these report options are a great tool for use. The input method is
In tracking my eating routine in a 3-day diet plan using the Food Tracker, I was surprised by my results. I realized that my current eating habits were not the best. In comparing my diet to the recommended diet amount, I was not consuming the recommended food targets. I have learned that I can adjust my diet using the daily food group targets and the six classes of nutrients. The six classes of nutrients are essential to having a healthy well balanced diet.
