Reflection On The Courage To Know

The course Courage to Know evokes the questions: the courage to know what? And why does it take courage to know it? From my interactions with people of different race, socioeconomic status, and title, within this course, the courage is to know others beyond physical dissimilarities. Because human beings inherently judgemental nature hinders their ability to understand people distinct from them, it takes courage to surpass subconsciously developed preconceptions about others' physical differences and accept others for being human. As a black woman from a predominantly black neighborhood, there are several stereotypes and assumptions inbred in the culture that I have adopted about white people. The perception is that given their institutionalized privilege and supremacy, white people are fortunate enough to avoid the harsh realities of life. This attitude towards white people inhibited me from recognizing they are also human and are faced with challenging life experiences. There were two instances in class whereby I had no choice but to sympathize with a white person; Anne’s mom cancer diagnosis and Meghan’s house burning down. I can recall it being a response to our highs and lows when Anne first spoke about her mother’s cancer diagnosis. I was frightened and felt absolutely terrible. I wondered how could she be so positive when negativity permeated her thoughts. I prayed for her and her family that night, a virtual taboo in regards to my origins. Back home when bad
