This assignment is a reflection on what I have learned over the past ten weeks, as I have almost completed my first semester and I have grown and learnt more than I thought possible. I will outline my area of expertise and how they have changed over this short period. I will discuss my current knowledge of the online environment and how it has advanced. I will demonstrate how being introduced to certain principles have given me a clear understanding of particular unit goals I would like to achieve, which will pave the pathway in completing my course goals. I will reflect on lessons learnt throughout this unit, and how they will help advance me throughout my degree and assist me in becoming a primary teacher.
Coming into this degree, I

I learnt these principles are an essential component of tertiary education, and it is paramount I learn them early on as I will be required to use them throughout my studies. My area of expertise has changed since commencing this course. I have grown and strengthened many of my skills but also learnt new ones to ensure my success throughout my degree.
Although my experience has given me great awareness into the online environment, I have quickly discovered there is more to learn and understand. My background is training material that is very black and white with only one correct answer. And after reading module six, “models of learning,” I learnt that I was using the transmission model of education. This is where I (the trainer) transfer my knowledge to the student (Leslie Owen Wilson, 2017). However, I now understand that learning in the 21st century is rapidly changing. Vygotsky theory of social constructivism and the usefulness of collaborating online is essential for me as a student currently completing MY degree online. Social constructivism suggests we learn better when we are engaging socially. It allows us to share ideas, knowledge, and information within the team and grow from our learnings (David, 2014). Through the weekly activities, I learnt I must continue to remain actively involved in group exercises, classroom forums, and online discussions so I am not feeling alone or isolated. After reading “learning in the digital age” and watching the video
A number two pencil and a lined composition book was all that was needed for school - that is until, I attempted to help my younger brother with his i-math online program. Education went from paper and pencil to a mouse and a computer. Paper was useless and spreadsheets were the new things. Handwriting became that of the past and technology replaced it with facilitated methods. This has caused a modern change to such an extent, that we are majorly dependent on an online interaction, prompting a technology-absorbed society. Nevertheless, people are less susceptible to confrontations because their attention is fixed to an online communication, where they are said to be virtually connected but find themselves solo. As it turns out, these revolutions
Within this essay I will be concentrating on explaining how an individual can implement reflection in their learning experiences. Applying skills of reflection to a particular learning experience such as induction week will be the main focus of this essay as it will convey the importance of reflecting upon the experience of working with other students.
Reflection is a major factor in "developing self-awareness" to improve services provided to everyone around me, this is to develop my own understanding in realising the good and bad made previously. Moving forward with a better understanding, as well as rectifying the mistake whilst recognizing the good points, (Horton-Deutsch and Sherwood, 2008).
This reflective essay will be adopted from Rolfe, Freshwater and Jasper’s (2001) reflection model. This reflection is based on a case study that I have read and will be based on the intervention I have chosen to treat the patient. Mr. Castello was admitted to the ward for observation after a fight and sustaining a laceration to his right forehead from a beer bottle and extensive bruising and scratches to his left arm. Mr. Castello had a pre-existing chest infection, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM), and asthma. Assessing, cleaning and dressing his wounds is an integral part of his treatment, as his DM can lead to delayed wound healing and increased chance of infection (Salazar, Ennis, & Koh, 2016). This could be successfully achieved through
I do not recall learning about reflective practice in my undergraduate studies. Reflective practice according to Barbour (2013), “is the cyclic process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, existing knowledge, and experience; resulting in a changed conceptual perceptive and practice” (p. 7). According to Barbour (2013), reflective process has many positive outcomes to help guide the nurse to become an expert nurse that can make on the spot decisions that do not interrupt patient care. I feel that reflective practice would have been beneficial to help guide me from a student nurse to a practicing nurse with critical thinking skills.
The online world has ensured various learning capabilities that make use of communication through writing. The aspects of communication provided have led to varied knowledge and skills that are essential for learning. The online world has instilled the discipline of patience and the skills of critical thinking as learners communicate through discussion boards and other social media platforms. The online world has increased knowledge capabilities on different minds as it ensures various aspects of asking questions from a varied line of resources. Human minds have been a great source of information as members share their experiences and learning modalities with each other (Hansen, 2008).
When making a decision to participate in online learning, there are numerous decisions that must be made by the participant. Setting aside time specifically for online learning is a must in order to be successful. It is important to read the syllabus to establish timelines for reading and completing assignments in a timely manner. Having the option of working with others in learning communities can afford opportunities to share ideas and collaborate with other learners. Nagel, Blignaut & Cronje, (2007) talked extensively about the establishment of an online community as a prerequisite
The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the contribution of reflective practice for clinical nursing. Reflection has been defined as a way for individuals to “capture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate” (Boud et al 1985: 19)
For the last six weeks in both mental and acute setting, I have reflected on events that I had met in each week. Now, I am going to identify essential personal learning outcomes from those events and will include personal awareness of strengths and weaknesses. Among the different models of reflection, I will use the Gibbs model of reflection which entails six stages such as description, feelings, evaluation, analysis, conclusion, action plan.
This paper presents a theoretical model of online instruction and learning to mirror a constructivist approach to education. Constructivism is a common approach to learning and more and more districts are employing online learning environments in its schools. Course content and delivery elements are explored as they apply specifically to online learning in a K-12 environment. Other components of the construction of a web-based learning environment includes student motivation, student assessment, and the role the teacher plays in the online environment. The findings of this research paper depicted that whether learning takes place completely in an online course, or as part of a blended approach to learning, there still needs to be a strong structural foundation for the online learning environment to be effective. Overall, interaction between the teacher and learners, as well as peer interaction, is critical to the success of any online learning.
According to Young (2014), an effective learning environment is “an environment [that] provides relevant content, clear learning goals and feedback, opportunities to build social skills, and strategies to help students succeed”. Arbaugh (2000) stated that “instructor(s) effort to create an interactive classroom environment” was one of the most important factors in a classroom environment. Other important aspects to consider for online higher education classes are how difficult the ‘software course’ is, the flexibility of the classroom environment online, and occasionally ‘technological sophistication’ is required for ultimate classroom efficacy (Arbaugh, 2000). In an effective classroom environment, an interesting “two parallel process” takes place: there is a transformation in the students into active reflective learners, while both the students and teachers, through engaging more with technology, become better digital citizens (Office of Academic Planning and Assessment, n.d), thus this a component that online classroom environments should try to emulate to reach their effective potential. Essentially, the accessibility of online classroom, frequency of classes, consistency of curriculum with digital resources, and pedagogy are some of the most critical aspects found in effective classroom environments (Office of Academic Planning and Assessment, n.d; Allan and Clarke, 2007; Arbaugh, 2000). Moreover, a study conducted by the University of Alberta (Garrison, D., Anderson, T. & Archer, W.; 1999) found that there are “three elements essential to an education transaction”: cognitive presence, social presence, and teach presence. Furthermore, Allan and Clarke (2007) stated that the “most conducive” learning environments include the following three: the “skill oriented outcomes” that are expected of
As we begin to wrap up this semester, I reflect on all the learning and achievements I have obtained thus far in the program. Throughout this semester, my communication and relational capacity has grown, driving me to break out of my comfort shell. At the beginning of this year I had wrote a letter to myself, outlining three goals that I wanted to achieve. The three goals were: work with a palliative client, become more assertive, and to integrate family care into my practice. I began the semester off in acute care, on the medical floor. During the second part of the semester, I was assigned to be in the first group of students to start the Trail Outreach Nursing. My new placement has created a new goal of increasing my communication
According to Carr, Cox, Eden and Hanslo (2004), “students who focused on building knowledge and collaborative interactions had a superior average performance, as challenging online interactions promote understanding”. Interactive learning help instructors with the misconception students have on subjects, conceptual problems, and difficulties on topics. Immediate feedback from peers and instructors and social interaction built into the online discussions contribute to learning. (Collins, brown, & Holum, 1991). “Collaborative learning activities contribute to learning, critical thinking skills, a shared understanding, and long-term retention”. (Garrison, Anderson, and Archer, 2001)
Advanced practice nursing (APN) can be loosely defined as an area of nursing in which nurses are required to practice at an advanced level in a specific area of interest. APN extends the boundaries of nursing’s scope of practice and contributes to nursing knowledge, and the development of the profession (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008). In order to become an APN, the nurse must obtain a master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited university in an area of concentration designated for advanced practice nursing. According to Joel (2009), there are currently four major groups of APNs: certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse practitioners. APN focus on
In the final days of this semester, one tends to look back at the work done over a difficult and long three months. In the case of this English composition class, reflecting on completed essays has allowed me to analyze the development of my writing over the semester. Although this semester consisted of only five essays, it has become apparent to me that my writing has improved in many aspects throughout the semester. One general example of this improvement is the vocabulary, where simple vocabulary in the first essay had become more complex by the final essays. Additionally, I also believe that my writing has become more reflective of my actual voice and opinions, an improvement considering my first essays were best described as vague.
