Hector: I will tell you a story about my awfully awesome sister, Lee. Understand that the information I will say come from various sources due to lost memories. All that will explain why my sister Lee, is awfully amazing.
First, have you ever wonder what homemade French fries taste like? Well, for me it tastes like a memory that scar my taste buds forever. It all began when Lee was fifteen years old. She thought she was an amazing cook. She was learning how to cook rice, beans, chicken and mixing food together to see what science experiment will come out. Honestly, it all tasted somewhat... bad. But I still had hope that she will learn how to cook and that it tastes… well… good. But I should have listen to my gut feeling, which was “DON’T EAT IT!”
One day, my sister told me, “Hey Hector, do you want to eat something?” This was a test, a test that she will use against me if I answer wrong. So, I relied, “What do “you” want to eat?” I knew this would at least make her think what she wants to eat and not what I want, so whatever she says, I’ll just say, no thank you and I would be safe. But she said, “I want chicken nuggets and French fries.” “Yikes!” I said to myself, I really love chicken nuggets and French fries, how could I reject that offer. Then again, how could anyone mess up fried food. Right? Wrong! This is the day that I will remember for the rest of my life. And every time I eat homemade fries, I would end up throwing up.
My sister looked inside the fryer and said, “Ma, is the oil good or bad?” My mom replied with a confused face, “Good, why?” She replied, “Oh, nothing, just wondering.” My mom left to continue cleaning. I noticed my sister picking things out of the fryer. I honestly didn’t know what she was doing. She turned on the fryer and started to put the chicken nuggets. She waited and checked every minute to make sure the nuggets don’t overcook. My mom came into the kitchen because she smelled something cooking. She looked at Lee and said, “Aww, you going to cook for me too?” Lee looked so happy and said, “Of course but let me feed Hector first because he must be hungry.” Honestly, I was. I only ate breakfast which was at 7am and it was already 2pm. I could have eaten anything that smelled
In the excerpt “Why the Fries Taste So Good” by Eric Schlosser, Schlosser deeply examines the process of one individual farmer and his process, not to mention takes it as far as going to the International Fragrance and Flavor facilities to see what truly does make the fries taste so good. He does a good job of hitting each individual appeal as a writer in order for us as readers to accept the information he’s handing out. Even in Ian Brailsford’s review of Schlosser’s excerpt, he finds little if any opposition whatsoever. At one point he even says, “By focusing on Ray Kroc’s empire McDonald’s – America’s biggest employer and real estate owner – Schlosser is covering well-travelled academic terrain” (Brailsford 118.)
We had finally arrived at the front of the amusement park. We all waited anxiously to get our tickets. Finally we had reached the front of the line and we entered the park we walked past all of the stores. We all rushed to get in line but were stopped by my uncle, who said we must have lunch before we did anything else. So I gobbled down my food, that greased my hands and filled the plate with ketchup. Afterwards, when everyone was done with their food, we got up but was stopped again and was warned by our uncle to wait for our food to settle. But my ignorant self just kept running into the line.

As a child who had grown up watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I had always dreamed of one day visiting the factory. I am sure most children my age would agree with this dream. For Eric Schlosser, this dream became a reality, but it was not exactly the reality he was hoping for. In Eric Schlosser’s article, “Why the Fries Taste Good,” he talks much about processed food and the flavors of food, especially McDonald’s french fries. He visited the International Flavors & Fragrances factory (IFF), reminding him much of the factory in Willy Wonka with the glorious smells, white lab coats, and multiple small glass bottles full of chemically produced flavors. For me, I have always seen food as fuel and all these chemicals additives are not food. Eric Schlosser’s article provides an informative piece that has persuaded me to think differently of the flavors of fast foods and processed foods, which ultimately changes the underlying fact of what food is.
“I have been the best son you could ever ask for”. By this time mom knew that I wanted something. I continued, “Chipotle would be a great reward for a great son”. Being the great mom that she is, she responded, “I was just thinking about how good Chipotle sounded myself”. It was like music to me ear or might I say mouth. My mouth began to water just thinking about how I was going to destroy the burrito that awaited me. Much like a lion would devour his prey. Of course, no blood would be involved, only enough cheese to make any human possibly sick afterwards. Mom would not let me go with her to get the food. I stayed home, pacing back and forth through the house thinking that the floor was going to have permanent indentions from each foot step I took. I could not wait any longer my mouth was watering. I heard the faint squeak of the front door, “squeakkkk”. I ran down stairs, ripped open the bag and began to devouring my prey. No moment could compare to this very instance. I didn’t want it to end, but I knew that the final bite was only a few morsels away. I didn’t want to slow down but I also wanted the burrito to last forever. My Chipotle addiction can often be my biggest weakness. My mom has now learned to use it as a bribery tool in order for me to complete household chores that I would never want my friends to find out
McDonalds’ french fry taste has nothing to do with the potatoes being used by the company, the fries get their taste from the cooking oil. 7
Harmony Lee is an 18-year-old young lady who enjoys volleyball, drawing, reading and listening to music. She grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii until the age of 10 when she moved to Alaska. I discovered she had many nicknames given to her by her family and friends, my favorite was “Dori”, Harmony is apparently an extremely clumsy but greatly loved by her family.
I was nearly asleep when I overheard mamas voice. Out of curiosity, I snuck into the kitchen. The first thing I noticed that mama was yelling at papa, which is hardly unusual. When I turned my head, I saw a strange man staying by the door with a book in one hand and a suitcase in another. Mama yelled at me for nearly 10 minutes before she reentered the kitchen. Unbeknownst to her, I silently followed. I witnessed mama standing over the strange as he devoured her disgusting pea soup without a single complaint or hesitation. I thought this would make her glad, but she seemed very worried instead. It did not take long for the soup to work its magic, a few moments later, the man was vomiting. I have
Mother and I agree to make Oreo cupcakes, candy kabobs, m&m cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and trail mix. I had to work that afternoon and wouldn’t arrive home until nine at night, but mom wasn’t going to start with out me. I got off work smelling like pizza dough, and exhausted, but I knew I had work to be done for the bake sale. While mom was baking the Oreo cup cakes I was putting together candy kabobs. My gloves where all gooey from positioning all the gummy candy on the fondue stick, and my fingers where aching from the twist ties that where used hold the bags together. The good thing was the whole house was full of over whelming smells of cupcakes, cookies, candy, and icing. Finally, my mom and I finished, so we got everything packed up and prepared for the morning of the bake sale. I couldn’t wait to go to bed. We arrived early at seven in the morning to arrange the booth. The booth looked amazing, I just wanted to eat everything that was on the table. When all the booths were ready to go, families began approaching the booth buying our baked goods. The children really enjoyed the candy kabobs. All the kids were walking around with gummy, sticky faces, and kept returning to buy more. Those sold out fast! From eight o’clock a.m. to four o’clock in the afternoon, I stood on my feet trying to get folks to come over and contribute
An individual had to do hard work and achieve certain goals in order to be known as successful. As a biology premed major, I aspire to be a doctor. In order to pursue my medical career, I would like to be as precise, pleasant, and determined like Dr. Lopez, Dr. Miami, and Dr. Sandra Lee.
It all started one happy night when my family and I went to Chipotle for dinner. My sister and I had our regular burrito while our parents took a bowl of veggies. The burrito tasted a little weird and possibly expired. “Dad, my burrito tastes a little weird,” I said. He said leave it but I said I was fine. “Arushi (my sister), doesn’t your burrito taste weird,” I said. She said her burrito was fine.
To create a world full of peace and prosperity, humanity must adapt to the principles of morality and education to reduce the prejudice that is ubiquitous. Sister Rose strived to reduce prejudice born of ignorance and misperception, to promote means for conveying the richness of the Jewish and Christian traditions accurately and without bias and to foster cooperation among Jews and Christians in areas of common social welfare. An upstander is a person who sees an injustice, or something morally wrong, and they act positively to correct the issue. Not only can you be an upstander in bullying situations, but in any scenario in which something is wrong and can be corrected through your positive impact. Being an upstander is not a complex idea nor is it hard to achieve an
In the essay “Why the Fries Taste Good” by Eric Schlosser, I looked at the main idea of the history and background behind the making of fries. However, it goes in depth with the fries being made from scratch and natural ingredients to processed and unhealthy. The main point of the essay is fast food restaurants serve highly processed foods. Schlosser has been investigating the fast food industry for years. He uncovers the history and business of processed foods.
Sister Gray, Sister Gray, that is powerful. Good paper. I agree with you and our facilitator D. Ridley which expressed his belief that between stimulus and response lies everything, including our freedom to choose. (D. Ridley, personal communication, February 24, 2018). There is something so powerful considering ‘freedom to choose’. Do you agree? Reading your paper caused me to think about, what if between stimulus and response someone made the wrong choice to do something negative. Would that choice be reactive or proactive? Or, do we call proactive, is when people make the right choice? I believe the focus is on the ‘space between’ stimulus and response or the time you give yourself before your response. I know it is hard for us to think about someone, for example, doing a negative and bad thing
Langston Hughes once said “Negro in America! Often hurt, discriminated against, sometimes lynched- but always there were the stars on the blue body of the flag (Langston 6). In the past all African American women were ashamed of their skin color. In One Friday Morning Nancy Lee suffered from segregation, getting denied equality rights and dealing with ignorance regarding to the meaning of the American flag.
