Reflection Paper On Sonography

My interest in x-rays and ultrasounds led me to pursue a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Do any of you know what a Diagnostics Medical Sonographer is? I don't think very many people know what Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is, so I will be telling you guys what that is. I will be telling you about the job, about how much money you get, what you do during the job, the education you need for the job, why I like this job, and why other people like this job.

Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a career that falls within the medical and health field. Diagnostic medical sonographers utilize machinery known as sonographic scanners. These scanners create images of the patient's internal organs. There are a few other names that this specific career may be referred to as, which are Ultrasound Tech and/or Medical Imaging. Although though there are advancement possibilities, there are pros and cons about the career. The work environment may be difficult, and differential diagnosis is found within sonography. There is a lot of time and dedication needed as well as important information to know and understand about the career before deciding whether or not this is the chosen path that will be taken. I have decided that DMS is the career I want to be successful in because I have always had the interest of becoming a prenatal sonographer. I love working with people and I also wouldn’t mind being the person that could potentially save someone else’s life by

I am a senior in high school and therefore I haven’t fully picked my major yet, but I have narrowed it down. For my major I am still trying to choose between Radiology and Sonography. I can’t choose because I’ve been in love with both topics for years. I’ve shadowed my cousin who works as an x-ray technician and I have volunteered in the sonography lab at Angelina College. I want to do Radiology because I love looking a x-rays of broken bones and trying to figure how that person fell and landed to break there arm in that certain way, to me that is just so fascinating. But I also want to do Sonography because you have to interact with so many different people. One of the girls in the sonography lab told me something that fascinates me so much, she said that in Sonography you have to make your own

A diagnostic medical sonographer who specializes in obstetric sonography is able to capture the images of a fetus inside the mother’s uterus. This type of sonography is used to monitor the growth and development of the fetus as well as its health. Imagine seeing a parent’s joyful expression towards one another when they hear the sound of their baby’s heartbeat for the first time. Or to witness their smiles from ear to ear when they get to see their baby move and wiggle about inside the mother over the ultrasound screen. This special moment is something that an obstetric sonographer has the pleasure of witnessing every day.

In sonography you have a wide range of jobs and deal with hands on technology. I also chose this field because it is a 2 year program so I can learn fast and start working. It also has a nice salary and can allow you to live almost anywhere. I also love that I don’t just have to be behind a desk and there is no lack of growth in this career. Sonography is a better and easier way to figure out what is wrong with a patient so this help patients visit to the hospital more easier and effective, making their lives better in a way that I am apart of. This research paper has just confirmed all the reason why this should be my career. The only thing I didn’t know was the the salary was different because I thought it was 50,000 annualy because researched it in 2012, I didn’t think that it might have changed over the years. I have always known since I was a little girl that I wanted to be something in the medical field. There was never a doubt about that. It took a lot of thinking to figure out what exactly it was that I wanted to be just because I didn’t want to go to school for too long; because as I have mentioned before I am not a fan of school at all. Just recently I had finally found the right career path. I had decided that I wanted to be a Traveling Sonographer. This is perfect for me because it won’t take me forever to accomplish and I will be able to travel like I’ve always wanted to do. But there is also a deeper reasoning to why I want to be a Sonographer, and I'm going to talk about that in this paper.

Eat, Sleep, Scan.” Before I began my research on being a Medical Sonographer, I already had a pretty good idea at some of the things they do. They mainly do ultrasounds on babies, to see the growth and health of the baby. They also do ultrasounds on all different people, if they’re in pain and they need to determine the problem. Their job might seem easy; sometimes it is, but the other times when we discover something wrong with the patient you have to keep it in. You are not allowed to tell them what you just found out; only the doctor can do so. It’s very heartbreaking for them to do baby ultrasounds because sometimes, for some unknown reason something happens to that baby and it’s hard to keep that bottled up and act like nothing’s wrong in front of their parents. I wanted to find out what this job requires and what kind of education i need to obtain to get a job for this career. I also wanted to find out the employment outlook, the estimated salary, and jobs in Mississippi for this career. The first place I went to find my information was referred to by my teacher, where I found every answer I needed and more. The website I found my information on is called mschoices.com. Diagnostic Medical Sonography is a career that I just learned about this year. I never expected to do anything in the medical field but the more I research about this career, the more it interests me. I love helping people and another career path I have looked at is something in pediatrics. With sonography, I would be able to look at the fetus and make sure everything is fine with the pregnancy. There would be many aspects of this job that I think I would enjoy.

One of the main reasons for choosing a healthcare career in todays society, aside from the basic need for a self sustaining income, is the opportunity to make differences in peoples lives. With the demand for healthcare professionals and alternative medicines on the rise, so is the need for adequately educated trained personnel. Diagnostic Medical Sonography is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to radiologic procedures such as x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Accounting for approximately 50,300 jobs in the United States in 2008, compared to the 214,000 jobs held by radiologic technicians, according to

Diagnostic medical sonographers who are also known as ultrasound technologists, play a very pivotal role in the health industry. Sonographers use specialized 3D imaging machines to generate images of internal body organs and structures which works hand-in-hand with doctors in gathering the necessary data needed for a diagnosis (Reece & Hobbins, 2007). Diagnostic medical sonography has many different branches you may pursue such as obstetrics/gynecology, breast sonography, cardiovascular sonography, and abdominal sonography to name a few (Brent, Jensh, & Beckman, 1991). The limits of authority and legislated scope of practice for sonographers has recently been revised in May 2013 by sixteen representatives from multiple sonography organizations throughout the country (2016). A diagnostic medical sonographer must be a qualified individual who is academically credited as well as clinically skilled before they begin to practice. Affirmation, demonstration, continuing education as well as re-certification from a nationally accredited organization is required for every sonographer (2016).

Deciding to be a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer was not an easy or fast decision. Like everything else in life, my decision was gradual and time-consuming. However, being involved in the medical field was always something that I longed to do. Most other kids want to be a firefighter, police man, or President of the United States. For me I always knew that my heart belonged in the hospital.

To achieve my goal to attend Johnston Community College’s Medical Sonography program I have to start by completing an application for general college admission. After completing the admission process I will then have to start on my classes that are required for me to be accepted into the program. Once I fit the requirements for the program I will then I will then I will sign up for the Medical Sonography program, which should take about two years. To successfully reach my goal I may have to cut back on the hours that I take at my part time jobs. At the moment I have a lot of free time which allows me to have two job, once I begin working on my goal I expect to be forced to either quit one of my jobs or to cut back on my hours.

Sonography utilizes sound waves to generate an image that can be analyzed to determine or rule out a diagnosis. Ultrasound or ultrasonography is a medical imaging technique that uses high frequency sound waves. It is a high pitch frequency that cannot be heard by the human ear. A diagnostic medical sonographer works directly with patients in a dimly lit room with imaging machines. The sonographer gets the medical history of the patient and prepares the patient for an ultrasound examination. The sonographer explains the noninvasive procedure and answers any question the patient might have. The sonographer positions the patient and covers the patient only exposing the area needed for the procedure. The sonographer

I have observed how Radiologic technologist comfort patients and provide their support at a time where the patient is overwhelmed and anxious about what the results will show. For example, we had a young kid come into the Emergency Department with his parents complaining of severe abdominal pain. The doctor had ordered a CT scan and I accompanied the patient and his parents to the CT scan room. The kid and parents were terrified to get the scan, as they were unsure what to expect. A Radiologic technician explained the process and risk/benefits of the scan to them very clearly and in a consolable manner. He answered all questions that the parents or the child had and put their minds at ease. I envision myself being in the shoes of the technician directly contributing to society. I inspire to be in a field that allows me to assist and console people when they are at a rough point in their
