“The List” Reflection The book “The List” by Siobhan Vivian was very captivating. In high school people can be and judgmental. In the book a list is released the week of homecoming with the ugliest and prettiest girl from each grade. Each girl has a different reaction to being on the list whether it’s good or bad. The book can be a little confusing when reading because each chapter switches to different characters. The book was enjoyable to read. I could relate to each character in a different way. My favorite part of the book was when each character was introduced in their chapters. The characters are all so different but all have one thing in common which is being on the list. I would highly recommend this book to classmates. …show more content…
If anything, the guaranteed anonymity makes the judgements of the list appear more absolute, impartial, unbiased. And so, with every new list, the labels that normally slip even and dice the girls of Mount Washington High into a billion different distinctions- poseurs, popular, users, losers, social climbers, athletes, airheads, good girls, bad girls, girly girls, guys girls, sluts, closet sluts, born-again virgins, prudes, over-achievers, slackers, stoners, outcasts, originals, geeks and freaks, to name just a few- will melt away. The list is refreshing in that sense. It can reduce an entire female population down to three clear-cut groups. Prettiest. Ugliest. And everyone else. This morning, before the first homeroom bell, every girl at Mount Washington High will learn if her name is on the list or not. The ones who aren't will wonder what the experience, good or bad, might have been like. The eight girls who are won’t have a choice.” I chose this passage because it explains what the book is about. It tells the reader that the list is about who is the prettiest and the ugliest girl in each grade. The passage describes the type of people who are put on the list like the popular girls or bad girls. When you are put on the list you become the center of attention, everyone knows who you are now. The passage also explains how the list are distributed throughout the school. The passage summarizes
At the beginning of this novel, we were introduced to Sarah Nickerson, a Harvard graduate, with a good paying job as the vice president of Human Resource at Berkeley Consulting, three kids, and a sweet husband. However, she was career-driven and dedicated to her job to afford to live in Welmont and to be able to take care of the family as her husband is trying to survive the second round of lay off at his work. However I noticed that this job put a lot of stress and strain on her and her family, as she didn’t get to spend a lot of times with her kids or husband. In the morning on Friday, she would get her kids ready for school but her and her husband would rock, paper, scissor on who would take the kid to school and when she didn’t have to, she was pretty happy. The day of the accident was when she didn’t have to take her kids. As she was trying to make a phone call, she crashed and ended up in the hospital for eight days. I like how this book go into details of her life before the accident and then illustrates her life afterward.
With the multitude of characters and their thought provoking pasts, one can certainly learn much from their perseverance and determination. The rating I would give it would be four and one half out of five. The book itself was delightful and captivating, as well as the intriguing characters, but the tone was sometimes a bit slow and could be a boring to some degree. Any minor characters in this book seemed so much more than one would expect from non-fiction. The characters in general mentioned in this story were often given many descriptive details and did not seem like they were just there for show. They truly aided in helping paint the picture of the students and school, making it seem more like it was like any regular high school. This book was extremely interesting and truly makes one think about how immigration is a serious matter that can turn dangerous at almost any
I loved this book so much. There is so much action and is so much better and exciting with so much amazing detail and description. This is one of my favorite books ever. When you read it, you don’t want to put it down and it makes you feel like you are with the characters in the book and you know them so well. I recommend this book to anyone who can read at this level.
In my opinion I thought that this book was a very good book. In this chapter I will describe the setting, theme, plot and conflict etc. This book had a few different settings like
This book is a very good book. It is not one of my favorite books, but it is in, or somewhat close to, the top ten list. It has an intriguing story and has some humor in it to make sure that it isn’t all mellow.
One of the things about the book that I personally liked was the characters, some of them were easy to relate to, even if you couldn't you could relate someone you knew with them. For example, David is not one of the main characters from the story but the more you learn about him, the more you realize how ambitious he is, wanted to change his career path almost every week, standing up to Mr. Neck. I think he's one of the things that helped Melinda find her voice.
I found it extraordinary with every decision or turning point a character faced in their lives. What I have assimilated from this book is you cannot let where you come from determine your path, it is only you who can determine your future. This is also why the author Wes was one of my favorite characters in this narrative. His story is one out of a multitude that shows anyone can have a bright future. But I did not discern any similarities with the characters and myself. We all were born into different situations and grew up around opposite influences. Overall, my impression of the novel is positive I believe it is an outstanding book and anyone else who reads it I would hope agrees. I would definitely recommend this book to people because it may help them appreciate
It captured my attention from the beginning. I like how the Rand was descriptive words to help me have an image of what was happening in the novel. I like the story line. I like the idea of someone breaking way from everyone else and being different from others. That they are able to think for themselves and that it is ok to be different from others. I also liked how the novel had some romance because I do enjoy romance novels. The Language Police written by Diane Ravitch, I did not quit enjoy the book. I do not really like books like that. I do not recommend this book if you are not interested in how the bias panel chooses stories for children. I do recommend the novel, Anthem. It gives the reader a sense of individualism, there is a story behind
This book was a very good read. It was very eye opening. More than what I expected. It was a very well written book about the hidden lives of young
Overall, the book is really good and sticks to those three main ideas of courage, weakness and truth throughout it. As both a reader and a writer (I write my own little novels) this book is really goods and i would recommend it to anyone who asks
I bought the book “Popular” without knowing much about the topic. Even though the book is mainly for girls, I think guys would find this book intriguing. Maya Van Wagenen’s story is told in this book about how she turned from an antisocial loser, to one of the most popular girls in her school. What was unsettling about this book was how poor and cruel Maya’s area was. Even an eighth grader from another school got shot at for carrying a pellet gun to school. The drug war that was going on in Maya's area really made me change the way I looked at the world, making me realize that the world isn't always in happy times. This book really did not measure up to my expectations because I thought this book was just about a girl doing random things to
I really liked the book. It was very enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to my friends, because I think they
Rowley and Greg are not the most popular kids in school ¨I´ve been trying to be a lot more careful about my image ever since i got to middle school¨ (Kinney 18). The book is very well wrote if you are looking for a funny exciting book that is not boring to read. Its like every other kids life he has an older brother that likes to pick on him named Rodrick and an annoying little brother that gets whatever he wants his name is Manny ¨When I woke up this morning and went downstairs there were about a million gifts under the christmas tree. But when I started digging around , there were hardly any gifts with my name on them. But Manny made out like a bandit. He got every single thing he circled in the catalog¨ (Kinny 120). So over I enjoyed reading and writing about Diary of a wimpy kid it was a fun read not too hard or not to easy i am really looking forward to the next books. I enjoyed how the book also had pictures if you didnt understand what they meant in the reading it helped to look at the pictures to get a better understanding. So I did like this book and i give it a great review and would recommend this book to a person that likes a fun quick
generalization. It is interesting, nonetheless, that Judy Blume immediately brings up a topic festering on the mind of teens everywhere, their changing bodies and how to handle them. On the first page, Margaret describes her mother checking to make sure her deodorant is working. Already, Margret is planning and anticipating her own use, saying “I don’t use deodorant yet. I don’t think people start to smell bad until they're at least twelve.” (Blume 1) Whether the adolescent reader has recently entered the world of preventing the new found stench radiating from his or her maturing body, or like Margaret, the day is soon approaching, the topic immediately capture the reader's attention. As Margaret’s story develops, it becomes perceivable that friendships and relationships can be an underlying pressure in the life of adolescents as personal discovery is taking place. Peer pressure, especially in adolescents, can manipulate actions. The Pre- Teen Sensations (PTS) girls are all racing to grow up, and boys are a major component as girls begin to blossom into young women. Each girl in the group is required to write out the names of the boys they find attractive. Instead of presenting the name of the boy she actually liked, Margaret writes the same name she know everyone else is going to write down. Captivatingly, peer pressure in the novel is not resolved.
Nerds, preps, and jocks, the main labels that are given out in high school. At lakeville high if you're not in either the preps or the jocks high school seems like a nightmare. You sit at the bad tables with the other nerds, the preps and jocks make fun of you, and you're not invited to parties. At Sophia's school it wasn't like a normal school. She went to mittenville’s school of magic which was filled with fairies, wizards, and witches. Wearing wacky clothes was normal at Mittenville. Sophia had never left the town of Mittenville so she thought her clothes were the style. Most kids wouldn't be happy about going to a new school but Sophia was since she was popular at her old school. Sophia had no clue that her popularity would be gone at her new school.
