The pantry project in many ways was an opportunity for outreach on campus. What failed to happen was that. This project, I admit made me go a little crazy and I almost was prepared to donate money to the pantry and cop out. But there is so much that I would have done if this pantry project had gone successfully. There was so much out of our control. First off there is the matter of the class being very clueless to the process. We as a class didn’t know what we were going to do. We did have some passion for the project. My team I assembled was pretty good. I liked my team but the other teams in the class, I had major issues with and I will discuss my thoughts on them in a bit. I think what my team would have done and we would have done amazingly is that we would attempted to actually find an organization or find people on campus to help the pantry. In retrospect they didn’t need any more help. But let us hypothetically go there. Let us pretend they needed to open the pantry more or when they did open, they needed us. Well a part of my team would have gone and helped operations with the people of the pantry. The other part of my team would have wanted to go out and seek monetary donations for the pantry. We also probably would have gotten Pop Tarts too. I wanted to be a leader. I wanted to go to friends, family and strangers and gather up money. My rich boyfriend was prepared to write a check for the pantry. I wanted to at least make sure they had enough stuff at the pantry. When I learned they had too much, it felt like a slap in the face. That is out of our control. But I had ideas. My group would have done enough had we been given the chance. I did not like my classmates conduct at all if I am being completely truthful. They were immature and did not seem genuinely interesting in attempting this project as a class. I just don’t like these people and if it were not for my friends in the class, I don’t know if I would have been able to compose myself. They did not seem like they were actively participating in the assignments at hand during this particular project or in general. However, I can't fault them all that much because the project seemed like a trap from the start. The fact that we did not
the 1970s was not just an era of day glow trousers, lava lamps, and the emergence of punk rock. it was a traumatic economic decade of stagflation, a three day week and the return of unemployment. yet despite some headline grabbing crisis, it was a decade of rising living standards, the growth of credit and rising of property prices. consumers in the 70s paid less for television, cellular devices, and houses compared to what the average consumer pays today.
Resources needed to accomplish this project included permission and approval by the University of Minnesota director of public health, which included meetings and interactions with data system personnel to initiate the first roll-out of SNAP information in an email. Met with personnel at Second Harvest Food Bank and received information on the SNAP program, phone conversations with MDH to further clarify the SNAP process. The public health student that started the Nutritious U Food Pantry was contacted and interviewed. Internet services to explore grocery stores within walking distance of the campus were needed, along with investigation into public transportation availability. Spreadsheet to perform side-by-side food costs and comparisons were
The documentary Food Inc. is a great example of commercial farming. The purpose of commercial farming is to mass produce food and animals, to feed the community. The concept of commercial farming could also go along food security. The community needs to make sure that there is enough food to feed the growing population at all times. The problem right now isn’t that there isn’t enough food, but rather that there is too much food. The Tyson company produces all kinds of meat to feed people around the country, and when doing so they tend to overproduce. With this overproduction, we are left with expired animals that cannot be produced into food for consumption, and in turn, provide extra parts that aren’t useful or helpful.
The agency I participated at for my ten hours of service learning this semester was the Plain City food pantry. The food pantry is located on 156 W Main St, Plain City, OH 43064. There are many people that run this agency. A couple names are Phyllis and Jane. I participated March 2nd from 9:30 to 11:30, March 3rd from 9:00 to 12:00, April 4th, from 9:30 to 11:30 and April 6th from 9:00 to 12:00.
On Tuesday, October 3rd Monica Banks, a Wake Forest Divinity School student and a co-founder of New Communion, shared her experiences about her career/field of study and how it began to intermingle with food. Banks first began her career with a degree in business leadership and management and opening approximately 40 restaurant venues. After years of experience, she was looking for something more in life. After pursuing nursing she felt her calling was in the pastoral field and specifically surrounded food and poverty. As a second year student at Wake’s Divinity School, Banks was required to complete a group project, which led her the idea of the mobile pantry—now new communion. Banks felt such a passion for this project that she completed a grant application to United Way, which was eventually granted for the interfaith mobile food pantry. Banks took
Coming into my second year of high school I was so tired the first day of school not wanting to get up just wanting to sleep forever and not having to worry about school. Unfortunately living in a Mexican household that was not an option. So forcing myself out of bed and heading to school I could say I was productive over the summer. When Mr. Jarashow asked me what I had done over my summer I told him I finished all my community services hours. This helped me grow as a global citizen by taking action because I devoted my time to helping out at my local food bank (valley food bank) by helping hand out food to those who needed it, during my time at the food bank I meet a lot of new people. They shared their reason of being there and some valuable
Previous funds were used to pay the pantry’s one employee, Program Director Stephani Nichols. Her resume is attached. She has brought great value to Project 66 Food Pantry and has provided assistance well beyond her wages. Stephani has enabled the pantry to meet their previous goals (find and purchase a building, buy, and implement computers) and has created new goals that meet the needs of the Edmond community.
My project was to tutor YMCA student at North Miami elementary. One of my many duties was help as many students that I can. I tutor student from Pre-K-5th grade during my share time in the YMCA. I started this project during my 9th grade year. My whole intension of this community project was to get it over with so I can graduate. Never did I know that I would later enjoy spending my time with the YMCA students. I grew to understand student. I gave them a voice. During my time in the YMCA I grew a stronger leadership skill. Before I started working on my project I took the time to plan it out. I told myself since the beginning that I want to volunteer in the YMCA. The first step that I took was to contact the site director. Second step I took
Junior year was the year that I was elected at Konawaena High School's Student Body Corresponding Secretary and the junior class Vice President. With these two major responsibilities, I found it difficult to balance the duties of an officer, school assignments, and having a job. I found myself prioritizing my roles as an officer over my school work, which you can only imagine did not work out so well. Throughout the school year I realized that I almost became a zealot about student activities, and this is where things in my social life went wrong, or so I thought. Friends of mine since the very beginning starred to become nothing but familiar faces, and soon enough, nothing but memories. I then began looking at the priorities of my "friends" and the priorities that I had for myself. They did not seem to match up. I soon found myself with a new group of people on
I search the pantry shelves for flour as my mother, Diana, flips through the notebook full of family recipes. It is a three-day weekend and we are spending the day off together. She finds the recipe for ginger cookies, or as we call them, Nannie cookies, named for my great-grandmother, a truly gifted cook. As we get the ingredients from the pantry, she begins to tell me stories about my great-grandmother Freda, who emigrated from Canada at (?) years old in 192(?) and worked as housekeeper to afford clothes and books for high school. My mother remembers that as an adult, Freda dragged herself around with crutches for a decade before she could get hip replacements in 197(?). Most in her position would have been bedridden. In later life, Freda
Just wanted to make sure everyone is aware that in November and December we are only having one pantry instead of two, November 10 and December 8.
On August 4, 2015, Vivian Cu and I chose to volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank located on 700 Edwards Ave. in New Orleans. Our Tuesday morning of service started at 9AM and ended around 11:30AM. In preparation for my first time at Second Harvest, I wore comfortable clothes that were easy to move around in and that were possible to get dirty in. The man in charge of all volunteer services, Vince, quickly gave me my duty for the day. There is a huge case of canned goods and my job was to put as many canned goods as possible on a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt would carry these cans to many aisles where other volunteers would put them into smaller boxes that had to weigh from fifteen to thirty pounds. After packaging these boxes, Second
The social problem the Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry, a non-profit organization, deals with the social problem hunger. According to our textbook, Social Problems, a social problem is a condition that undermines the well-being of some or all members of a society and is usually a matter of public controversy. With that being said, world hunger fits the category of a social problem for many different reasons. Being hungry can cause humans to get very sick and have starvation related illnesses. Not only may someone suffer from these illnesses, they could potentially be killed from them. Those who work with the Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry favor the solution of making those in need of food aware of food pantries so starvation related illnesses are less likely to occur. When our social group spoke with the manager of the pantry, he gave us a sheet that has eleven different food pantries listed with their locations that he often gives out to customers because they are unaware of all the help them actually can receive.
Describe the program’s Theory of Change: The Salvation Army food pantry believes that though their programs that their clients would eventually in the long run become educated on resources and knowledge that would help them overcome poverty. The food pantry provides monthly food services and other resources for clients. From those their hope is to provide low income families, individuals with one hot meals for families of 4-5 people a month. They also hope to offer other recourses that could be hindering families from saving enough money to buy groceries every month. Their end goal is to improve food insecurity in the community.
Have you noticed the issues of how people in our culture think about and acquire food? For this assignment I have observed food acquisition at a grocery store. The data collection is consisted of two separate parts: fieldwork notes part one and brief interviews part two. The verbal questionnaire’s (mini- interviews) lasted from 2-5 minutes per person out of the ten individuals. The observations are broken down into blocks, meaning I observed the exterior and interior of the store. I under took the project at the Whole Foods Market located in Beverly Hills. I have shopped at whole foods numerous times, but decided that I should observe a location I have not been to. As a result my observations of the store do not get clouded by my opinions.
