During the summer of 2017, I will be taking two courses in Anatomy and Physiology I and also General Chemistry II lab. The goal with these courses is to further build my foundation in science, and to also improve my overall GPA. The mistakes I made during the first year of school have decreased my GPA, and so I hope that by taking these courses, and doing well, that my GPA will reflect more of the student I truly am. Moreover, I have shadowed several neurosurgeries, and this experience has been insightful. I witnessed complete disc replacements, lumbar fusions, and cranial incisions. Fortunately, the surgeon even provided me with step-by-step instructions as he performed the tasks, which I was also able to watch on the microscope monitor. This experience was capped off by clinical hours where we followed up with patients who had previous surgeries performed.
I applied to medical school this past year, and I had a few interviews, before ultimately not being accepted. Although I was accepted to a Caribbean medical school, I feel that through strengthening my application, I will be a stronger applicant this time around. Furthermore, my goal is to practice medicine in the vicinity of where I go to school at because I want to give back to the community which provided me with such a great opportunity in the first place. Montana does not currently have its own medical school. Although it does have the WWAMI program, I feel that I lose the safety net of being able to apply to in-state institutions, which typically give preference to their residents first. On the other hand, this opportunity has allowed me to seek out many great schools, such as UNT, and find a place where I can truly thrive. I did so by basically going back to the drawing board. My first encounter with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) was during my undergraduate nursing OB/GYN rotation. I was impressed with the CRNA when she placed the epidural to the patient in labor. I remembered patient had difficulty staying still due to the contraction, but the CRNA took her time to explain the procedure while comforting the distressed patient. Once the epidural was in placed and the medication started working, I could tell the relief the patient experienced. I realized then that a CRNA goes beyond the delivery of anesthesia, pain management and monitoring of patients. Thus, obtaining this degree will prepare me to ease the patient’s mind through education, pain management, monitoring, experience and compassion.
You are working in the internal medicine clinic of a large teaching hospital. Today your first patient is 70-year-old J.M, a man who has been coming to the clinic for several years for management of CAD and HTN. A cardiac catheterization done a year ago showed 50% stenosis of the circumflex coronary artery. He has had episodes of dizziness for the past 6 months and orthostatic hypotension, shoulder discomfort, and decreased exercise tolerance for the past 2 months. On his last clinic visit 3 weeks ago, a CXR showed cardiomegaly and a 12-lead ECG showed sinus tachycardia with left bundle branch block. You review his morning blood work and initial assessment.
Public health nursing is an important aspect of nursing field, which contributes tremendously to the safety and health of our society. Public health nurses work hard to assure our communities are healthy and are able to attain needed support to be self-sufficient. However, it seems their hard work goes unnoticed by vast majority of our society. This of course, is my opinion, but I would say that if I were to survey various communities, most people would say that “Nurses just work in the hospital”. I could be very wrong.
The contributions I have made to my school include participating in volleyball from the fall of 2014 to present. For volleyball, we have collected food for the food pantry, conducted a youth night to teach younger children the fundamentals of volleyball, and a breast cancer awareness night which included raising money to fund breast cancer research. I also participate in dance and softball. For the 2016 softball season I was chosen for the spirit award because of my positive attitude and energy during games and practices. Through hard work and dedication the dance team won conference champs at the 2016 conference competition. S: How was your clinical experience this week? This week was an okay week. I spent most of my time trying to get back into the swing of things. I was a little rusty at the beginning of the week but it got better as the week went on.
The purpose of this journal is to reflect on my experience and skills gained during my clinical placement at Ben Taub Hospital. On my first clinical day, I was excited and nervous at the same time. My first placement was in the PREOP/PACU area. I was assigned to help a patient who had been in the PACU area going on 2 days. Normally, once the patient comes from surgery they are only in the PACU area for a short period of time before they are discharged home or given a bed in another area of the hospital. This particular patient still had not received an assignment for a bed. The physicians would make their rounds to come check on him daily. The patient was a 28-year-old Hispanic male, non-English speaking, he had a hemicolectomy. He had a NG tube, urinary Foley catheter, and a wound vac. My preceptor had just clocked in and she needed to check on the patient’s vitals and notes from the previous nurse. Once she introduced me to the patient and explained while I was there, she then asked me to check his vitals. (Vital signs indicate the body’s ability to regulate body temperature, maintain blood flow, and oxygenate body tissues. Vital signs are important indicators of a client’s overall health status (Hogan, 2014). I froze for a quick second. I have practiced taking vitals numerous of times and I knew I could do it correctly. I started with the temperature first, when I was quickly corrected on a major mistake I had made by my preceptor. This submission is going to focus on the nursing care that I gave on two placement simulations and one shift on placement, placing emphasis on oral care, bed bathing and medication management. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that have taken place in my setting. This will also highlight the learning process taken place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. A twist on the "patient's perspective" approach is to describe a time when medicine failed to save or heal someone close to you. The purpose of this tactic would not of course be to rail against the medical profession, but rather to show how a disappointing loss inspired you to join the struggle against disease and sickness.
During our return demonstration, we all felt like we needed to look to our instructor for guidance in what we should do. The reason for this was because we all lacked the confidence to feel like we knew what we were doing. If I could do it again, I would have liked to have been more knowledgeable about the scenario so that I could be more confident.
Clinical practicum has provided a valuable study opportunity to me.When I took care of a living person in wards,I could apply the skills which are learnt from indoor lessons in school and books.Also,I could achieve more knowledge outside textbooks.However,I find that there is a difference between the real situation and theory.In ward,nurses have to be multitasking and need to manage several patients,time is precious to them.Nurses have to make an effort to save time from different ways.To give an example,in the ward I worked in this clinical practicum,nurses connected the syringe to the end of tube and administered drug to a patient with nasogastric tube by giving pressure to pump drug solution down the tube.Thus ,the procedure finished in a few seconds.I learnt this method from them and applied it in my practice.However,I was stopped by the supervisor teacher during one of my practise.She told us that it was wrong to administer drug by using pressure.She then asked me for the right method.I was shocked in that time because I learnt this way from the
I have personally been affected by the mess that America calls a health system. In the same year, I had severe food poisoning and my stomach and intestines swelled. I had to be hospitalized for a day each, and was then sent home, even though I was still very ill. The reason? My family has no health coverage. Both my parents are very hard workers and own their own business. One would think that my household could afford health coverage, but we can't, despite the many hours a week and hard labor. So, without coverage, there are heavy bills to pay. My mom and I have calculated that my parents will be paying hospital bills long after I graduate from college. As a student of nursing program I am doing 220 clinical placements at True Davidson long term care. On the first day of my clinical, I was so excited and quite nervous too. On that day, I picked one patient and it was my first experience to handle the client individually. I am going to write about that I eventually learn something from my first clinical experience. My buddy nurse told me to go to client’s room and ready her for breakfast. Then, I went her room and said her to be ready for breakfast. She looks at me and seems angry. Today I had a great day at the clinic. For the morning section, I had Omar Lora as my patient. Last time when he came, I collected all my assessment data. Today I updated his medical history, dental history, vitals, and EIOE, then I completed filling out the gingival assessment, the treatment plan, and the SAOP. Finally, I was ready to have my assessment data checked. It went really well, and I learned ways to helped me be more efficient with my time management, for example, I did not know how to have my radiographs up in the other monitor while I was doing my assessments. Apart from being one of most interesting settings in the nursing field, day surgery unwraps the full experience for nursing students to learn and also develop repetitive knowledge on what to expect before, during , and after each surgery, as well as the roles of each nurse within those parameters. Being inside the surgery room was an amazing experience because you get to see different operations performed by different health care professionals. Every surgeon does the sugary differently, meaning that same procedure is performed but adding or subtracting essential steps that makes each surgeon unique. Nurses also play an essential role in each surgery but their imperative duty is less than surgeons, but as equal
