Reflective Essay About My Clinical Experience

During the summer of 2017, I will be taking two courses in Anatomy and Physiology I and also General Chemistry II lab. The goal with these courses is to further build my foundation in science, and to also improve my overall GPA. The mistakes I made during the first year of school have decreased my GPA, and so I hope that by taking these courses, and doing well, that my GPA will reflect more of the student I truly am. Moreover, I have shadowed several neurosurgeries, and this experience has been insightful. I witnessed complete disc replacements, lumbar fusions, and cranial incisions. Fortunately, the surgeon even provided me with step-by-step instructions as he performed the tasks, which I was also able to watch on the microscope monitor. This experience was capped off by clinical hours where we followed up with patients who had previous surgeries performed.

I applied to medical school this past year, and I had a few interviews, before ultimately not being accepted. Although I was accepted to a Caribbean medical school, I feel that through strengthening my application, I will be a stronger applicant this time around. Furthermore, my goal is to practice medicine in the vicinity of where I go to school at because I want to give back to the community which provided me with such a great opportunity in the first place. Montana does not currently have its own medical school. Although it does have the WWAMI program, I feel that I lose the safety net of being able to apply to in-state institutions, which typically give preference to their residents first. On the other hand, this opportunity has allowed me to seek out many great schools, such as UNT, and find a place where I can truly thrive. I did so by basically going back to the drawing board.
