When I was younger creative writing was my strongest link, but as the assignments and requirements grew harder I lost my touch and began to struggle. After taking both English courses I can definitely say that it has helped me grow as a writer and as person. Before entering English courses I knew very little about writing. In my high school classes, I was taught how to write but was never taught how to do correct formatting, citing, and did not know the importance of writing in general. Thankfully, after getting my feet wet, I learned as much as I possibly could so that I could be knowledgeable for future assignments, and now I understand how important everything having to do with writing is. My two college English courses have taught me more than I learned throughout my four years in high school.
Before starting my English courses with The University of the Permian Basin, I was honestly intimidated and had no clue what to expect of these classes because I lacked knowledge in the writing department. My first semester was quite a disaster, so when I was about to begin this course (ENGL 1302.714) I was more worried than I was before

For this paper I definitely put my mind to it. Because I had a mental break down on the first paper I made sure I managed my time and organized correctly. When I took high school English classes I was never taught how to cite my work but was rather told to put my sources into websites that would do it for me, a website like EasyBib. With that being said, for this paper and the others I also focused on getting my works cited page right along with making sure I did proper MLA formatting. For paper two I unfortunately did not receive the help and advice I was expecting to make my paper better. However, taking that into consideration I feel I did a great job in meeting some of the objectives for this paper in the sense of staying on topic, and being very descriptive. In paper two I
My writing experience about the career paper was more informative than I was expecting. By reading the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), I quickly realized that there was so much information about a career in medicine, I was not aware of especially with regards to employment and predicted employment rates. However, the most difficult part of the writing process was trying to incorporate personal information into the narrative while using statistics and descriptions from OOH to come up with a coherent essay. For example, with a plethora of personal information and details about factors that has motivated me to pursue a career in medicine, it was difficult to summarize and incorporate information from OOH into my
I have improved very much in my writing process over this semester. I have grown as a writer in each writing process step such as prewriting, drafting, revising and editing, and overall. Outlining, writing a good thesis, getting peer reviewed, and giving myself plenty of time to finish a paper are new strengths that I have learned over the semester. I will reflect on all the topics in the writing process and my growth in argumentation essays. In fact, my previous attitude and feelings about writing was that I disliked it, and I knew that it was a weakness of mine. Now, I feel that I can write a strong argumentation essay. I have the sense that I have progressed a considerable amount from my first essay to my last.
My writing essays represent a timeline of improvement , from my first essay to my last essay I’ve noticed my growth as a writer. It was not until later on the semester that I realized that I lacked substantial academic vocabulary and had ongoing run on sentences, grammatical errors. My word choice was really repetitive with the constant use certain words. I have progressed where I have expanded my ability to use clear description and make my technical information clear. For example when writing essay 2 and 3 having to insert figures helped me portray my argument much more clearly. When addressing the figures in my writing they had become much more clear. Considering our class revolved around technological developments of the future it was very
I am a better writer now because this class taught me to consider the readers of a document before you even start writing it. I usually just jump into writing a paper and do not consider who will be reading it. Taking the time to figure out who the readers of the document will be and considering their wants and needs was a new idea for me. This concept has helped my writing become more reader-friendly and also helps me focus my ideas before I even
I believe I am an intermediate writer. I believe I am an intermediate writer because I usually get A's on every writing assignment I do, I've done a lot of writing in the past, and I have my mom who was an English teacher and helps me with my writing.
My experience throughout this class as a writer has been remotely good. I have learned many new ways about how to write an essay because one of my strengths is having a strong memory of the topic and another strength I have in writing is that I am much more experienced on how to describe a subject in great detail and because of this I know what I am capable of doing. I unfortunately still have some weaknesses in writing such as, procrastinating on starting the actual working process and because of this I start to panic on not getting done in time. Over all my writing skills throughout the class has not been what I expected but I did learn more about how to properly write an essay, which will help me out more later on in my future classes.
Most of us were in a situation when we had to say: “I am not too good at it.”, or “I can try, but it is not my field”. For example, somebody will ask me to draw a picture of a cat. I will try. I have seen cats before, know how to operate a pencil, have a flat piece of paper. I am even passing by art gallery on the regular basis, on my way to work. But I still cannot be sure you will not mistake my picture of a cat for a picture of a tractor or an intergalactic battlefield scene. That is how I feel about assignment to write about my writing process. So far, mine I can divide in three steps.
When I communicate, I will focus on what my audience needs or wants to learn, not on what I feel like telling them. Strive to see things from their perspective. Writing is a complex mixture of skills which works best for me by breaking down the process. The writing process involves a series of steps to follow such as pre-writing, drafting, editing, and publishing. I found that by focusing on the process of writing, I learn to write successfully. Developing the act of writing down into distinct steps allows me to maintain perspective on my writing, to understand that the feedback is about a specific aspect of my writing, and to discover that I can master and yes, even enjoy writing! Plagiarism content symbolizes that you have not worked carefully
Diving into this essay, I was nervous because I have not written anything in about a year! I was concerned about how I would construct my essay because I never wrote a memoir before and I was not sure what to write about. Based on the reading from chapter five of Writing Today, I constructed my memoir around an implied thesis. I think that I am still able to write decently well and that people who read my writing can still understand it. I am grateful that my writing skills have not reverted back to an elementary school level. I think it was a bit risky for me to write about a person and a series of moments in my life to describe how my writing came to be, instead of just how one person influenced me or about just one event. I am also a bit
Looking back at this year I know that developing my writing was something that was there but needed some improvement. When there were no teachers around to go over my writing I found websites that would correct my grammar and used that to my advantage. This would either make or break my writing because it could make it shorter or longer. My writing when there is a rubric to follow is great because I know what to follow but with reflections like these, it’s hard to develop good
The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of a college English class is great deal of reading and paperwork. In a typical English class I expect lengthy reading assignments and a ton of writing, but for this course, I expect to accomplish more than just reading stories and writing essays based on them. In this course I expect to acquire the literary skills that would enable and enhance my abilities to read, write and think at a college level. Majority of college English courses utilize a foundation of critical thinking skills and reading comprehension. Taking this course should improve my overall writing ability and broaden my perspective as a creative writer.
I think I’ve done more writing this year than I have in the last 4-5 years combined, perhaps even since high school. I don’t remember any significant writing projects I did K-12 except for a term paper on postpartum depression and some occasional poetry. At this point in my life when I really do need the writing skills, I regret not taking papers seriously or appreciating the art of good written communication. Writing objective papers has not been a problem since the layout is simply good logic and researching reliable information. There isn’t pressure to keep your audience’s attention by painting a mental image to get the reader immersed. Even with this journal entry, I’m not anxious about capturing the reader as these are simply my thoughts as they come to me while I type.
America is a place full of immigrants with no single ethnicity or race. America can also be referred to as the ?Melting Pot? because it consists ingredients of multicultural backgrounds. There are cultures such as French American, Asian American, Italian American and African American. I am Mexican American. My culture has helped me to become the writer I am today. My bicultural background and constant moving back and forth from Mexico to America has both influenced and weakened my writing. Although I was born in America, my Mexican culture has always been a part of my life. I have spent the majority of my life in Mexico, and Spanish is my first
What is this? The answer is I don’t know, but please stick with me for a little bit. I was listening to something recently, I don’t really remember where or when (I have a great tangent about information overload but I won’t go down that path here), it was about how to get things started and how to do things outside of the box. For some reason this made think about writing, I have never thought about being a writer, because I always assumed that know would care what I had to say. This thing I was listening to, made me realizes that it didn’t matter and if I wanted to write something then I should write it. So now I am writing and hopefully you are still reading.
Writing or critiquing a paper have never been my strongest, but as I finish English 100 I feel that I have now found a strategy that has helped me achieve both of these struggles. One of the strategies that has helped
