I had always enjoyed playing piano but was never dedicated to it which frustrated my piano teacher endlessly. She would tell me while I am a good player, I would be even better if I practiced. I never heeded her advice in the seven years she taught me. I never thought music would be taught formally to me after that. I was wrong. (1)
I was talking to my best friend Caitlin one day about a meeting I had with an administrator to choose my classes for the following year. (2)
“You have to join band!” she insisted. (3)
I hesitated. I had never played with other people before. Besides that, I was terrible at sight reading music plus a slow learner. I did not think I could keep up with everyone. Nevertheless, I would not pass up an opportunity to have a class with Caitlin, so I signed up for class. (3)
On the first day of school, I walked in anxious. The room felt like a foreign planet with its high ceiling and paneled walls. I sat down next to Caitlin in one of the many oddly backed chairs. The teacher Mrs. Lynn came in and took attendance. As she called each person, she would ask what instrument they played. It turned out that there were four piano players including myself. We were told that we would have to take turns playing the piano and keyboard. However, that didn’t mean we wouldn’t get to play at all when we weren’t at the piano. Instead, we would play one of the mallet instruments. That term baffled me. What was a mallet instrument? (4)
Luckily, I didn’t have to find
Throughout my life, I have been taken by music. However, it was not until my 8th grade year in middle school that I realized that I could be a musician for the rest of my life. Before that, music just seemed like something to keep me out of trouble. I wasn’t the best player at that time, and I still knew very little about it all. How could something like that ever support someone? Still, it was the only talent that I could find any success in, and it was still very enjoyable, so I wanted to still give it a shot.
Gradually, I lost interest in playing piano and the time that I spent on practicing was less and less, and when I was twelve years old, I gave up. I do have musical talent, good family environment, and opportunity. Nevertheless, my attitude and laziness are the causes of my failure.
I can remember the moment when I decided that I would become a musician. I was at a summer music program that I didn’t really want to be at, sitting in a room that was filled with the scent of insulation. I was sitting on one of the many blue cushioned chairs in the room/. The instructors went around the hall, asking other children how old they were and what instrument they played. Everyone seemed to know each other already, chewing at the bit to be let on the stage to grab their preferred instrument and play the little music that they already knew with their friends. I felt left out, as I didn’t have an instrument that I could call my own. When the instructor finally got to me, he asked my age, name, and what I played, just like he had to
The Piano Lesson is a masterpiece in itself, earning a Pulitzer Prize in 1990. However, this particular play has elements not typical of modern plays. It has the quintessential plot that encompasses a conflict. On the surface, the conflict is between Boy Willie and his sister, Bernice. However, beneath that conflict, lies the symbolism of the characters. Boy Willie symbolizes the American way or the white man's culture. Bernice is the African-American way, staying true to her roots and not parting with the heritage. Although she finds this painful, she will not part with her heritage. Her heritage is tangible in the presence of the piano itself. Within the presence of the piano, August Wilson
By combing all of these techniques, Crappwell portrays to the readers how to ensure students start an instrument and don’t
Then when I’m done student teaching I will be the teacher probably in high school”. She wanted me to really know that the whole reason why she really got into music was her father, sister and old music teachers. They all have shown her so much about music and she only wants to give back to future kids that was given to her. While growing up McKensi said her sister started getting into music and she’s really the reason why she started having an interest in music. Her dad had a big part in picking this major also because throughout the day her dad would sing every moment. There was never a time he wouldn’t sing. Her old music teacher just inspired her to take what they taught her about music and give it back to other generations. McKensi’s old music teacher made her understand music in a way that she understood it to the point she wants to make students in the future be the best they can
“DINNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!!” The bell rings signaling the end of a school day, but it wasn’t a Friday, or a half-day, or not even a Thursday, it was a Monday. I was convinced that my day would end, but I hear my name and a very depressing comment following it.
Although I have had many different types of teachers, there are two that stick out more than any others. The first was my third and sixth grade teacher. She was the best teacher I ever had. The second was my seventh grade teacher. She was the worst I think a student could have had. Both, these teachers had very different teaching styles and very different out looks on teaching. To be an effective teacher the teacher must respect the student and be willing to go the extra mile to help the students learn all they can. In this paper, I will discuss the effectiveness of these two teachers and how their teaching styles differed.
One thing that over the years I’ve become very good at is learning how to play many musical instruments. The different factors and components of this learning process include learning music theory, learning the basics of an instrument and how to apply different skills to various types of instruments such as string, brass, percussion and wind. Some of the instruments that I have learned are piano, organ, harpsichord, keyboard, guitar, bass, mandolin, trombone, cello, banjo, harmonica and soon the fiddle. Each of these different types of instruments required a different basic skill set.
I have been playing the piano for about 3-4 years now, so it has affected my life a lot. First, I was questioning taking a musical instrument because I knew it would take a lot of persistence, time, and effort. On the other hand, I knew I would learn to play music that I loved. My parents and I came to a conclusion, and that was that I was going to take the piano at Minton’s Academy of Music. I started off fine, but we didn’t notice any improvement. So we switched teachers, and how I learned changed dramatically. I went from struggling to read simple notes from sightreading songs almost the moment I saw them. Why does this matter, and why should you believe you will see the same results I did? Well, by participating in a music class I’ve learned the skill of perseverance. If I didn’t get a song, I would practice over and over again for weeks and months; I learned it is definitely worth the immense effort. It has had an influence over other subjects and activities I participate in too, such as math, science, and even swimming! Music has taught me to be patient,
The beautiful sound of piano music has captured the hearts of people since the early eighteenth century. Since then, many musicians have dedicated their lives to this instrument. Some players even play piano so well that it may seem that this instrument is easy to play. However, to be able to play the piano well isn’t easy; it takes a lot of skill. To become a good piano player, one must love music very much, have good finger techniques, and body flexibility.
So, the Element of culture that I find myself the most passionate about is Music. I say music because music I found in every culture. Music is what I believe in being part of human. There are literally hundreds different types of genres of music people listen to and millions of songs to listen to. A little about me, I personally find myself listen to rap music and old Rhythm and Blues. I come for a strong African American background family, where we have family get together, cookouts and just being close to your family. Most of the R&B songs tell a story. They talk about the black culture in good and also in bad ways. The R&B music I find myself listen to is more from my parent’s time. The music back during my parent’s child hood is a lot different than music today. One Major different is music back then had people playing the real instruments and sounds. I hear lectures from people from my parents’ generation how music today is terrible compared to their upcoming music. I personally feel music just changes because it adapts to people’s lifestyle and what they are going through. The Music Industry have always been dominant in society. If you think about every generation can remember listen to their favorite song growing up, and music can sometimes tell you all about yourself.
During my high school years, there were several teachers that I encountered. However, there was one teacher whom I shall never forget. In fact, he would be very difficult to forget, even if he were only remembered for his size, for he was an enormous man. His name is Anthony Sweeney of “Sugar Butty” my third form math teacher. To this point, I never knew the exact reason for such name but all students referred to him in such manner. He was six feet five inches tall and towered over us like a giant and he weighed over three hundred pounds. I never discovered his exact age, but, he must have been no more than forty, even though his hair had turned grey relatively early on, and there was a smooth shiny bald patch on the crown of his head. But, it is not just for his size that I remembered him. In fact, one of the things with I remembered distinctively was his sudden change in temper. One moment he would be very jovial and pleasant to speak to in class, and the next he would shout violently at some timid student who was merely looking through the window or he would become very mean and impatient with his students. For these reason, he became my absolute worst teacher.
When I think about teachers that I have had in the past, several different ones come to my mind. Each of these educators stands out in my mind for a variety of diverse reasons. Whether it is their sense of humor, their tactfulness, their love of the subject matter, their fanatical and sporadic behavior, or their yearning to be childish themselves, I can still remember at least one quality of every teacher I have ever encountered. Every one of these teachers conveyed subject material to their students just as they were educated and employed to do. However, I trust that every professional in the world has an abundance of opportunity for improvement; teachers could discover and improve themselves merely by having
The following day in class she asked me to show her all that I knew so we could have a steady foundation to start from, this wasn’t much. I explained to her my situation and my feelings towards the instrument and how from the start I had already had a negative connotation with it. I expressed to her that I just couldn’t seem to understand the music, every time I looked at the notes it was as if I was looking at it for the very first time, I then said, “it’s like a whole new language and I just can’t speak it” she then proceeded to say, “That’s the point! To learn music is to learn a whole new
