The Atlantis Project was appealing to me because it not only offers preparation for medical school through clinical shadowing and MCAT prep, but also helps to train well-rounded future physicians. Community volunteering, for example, gives students the opportunity to experience life in other parts of the world, and to be more culturally competent and aware. In addition, this program was unique to me in the sense that fellows engage in cultural opportunities outside of the hospital, and conduct activities together that will foster a strong support system and social network. As a result of shadowing, volunteering, and extensive research exposure, I have decided to pursue an MDPhD degree. At some point in my educational journey, however, I would
The Atlantans were steeped in magical powers, but lived to serve the rest of humanity. Every day during the summer, the cartoon swept a select set of Atlantans away to an actual place in the world to solve some seemingly unsolvable problem. Tales from Atlantis ended at 10, and that’s when Lucy would get to her own
A man named Robert Laughlin once said, "The Earth is very old and has suffered grievously: volcanic explosions, floods, meteor impacts, mountain formation and yet all manner of other abuses greater than anything people could inflict. Yet, the Earth is still here. It's a survivor." Laughlin clearly believes in this quote that the Earth can take care of itself. The Earth has been through worse disasters than just pollution, and extinction of species and plants. Roderick Nash, an environmentalist and activist, says otherwise.
When considering the Atlantic World, we tend to think about the history of how it all began, the middle, or the passage of the slaves from the Old World to the New World, and lastly, how it all came to an end. But in between the beginning, middle, and end there is much more than what we believe it to be. We must gain a complete understanding of why these people came to the justification of their actions and how it molded the interpretation for centuries after the “beginners.” Throughout the migration of people from the Old World to the New World, a variety of historical perspectives were gained as well as lost. One in particular being that of human beings. We can then begin to question whether this is something that was gained or lost within the lines of migration.
To this day, this culture of service continues and is evident to me by the administration, student body, and faculty’s preventative medicine initiatives. Initiatives such as, providing medical help by encouraging students to participate in student-run free health clinics as well as providing uncompensated medical and dental care to its local community. In addition to providing help, MMC focuses on educating the community with the use of health programs, the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, and Project C.O.P.E designed to help HIV/AIDS patients. Other initiatives that I desire to be a part of involve the use of research endeavors to help not only local communities, but also global communities such as Dr. Villalta’s research into diseases found in Latin America. Through its altruistic vision MMC has established a culture of service that has inspired many, as well as myself to accomplish great things not only in the local Nashville community, but also in the
Atlantis is known to most people as a legend or myth written by the Greek poet Plato, but is it possible that this lost continent really existed? Is it all legend or could there be some fact to it? Contrary to common belief there have been numerous geological and historical findings that actually give proof to the existence of this lost city. In the book Imagining Atlantis it tells us the story written by Plato. "According to ancient Egyptian temple records the Athenians fought an aggressive war against the rulers of Atlantis some nine thousand years earlier
A significant volunteer experience that augmented my leadership skills and expanded my understanding of medicine was at the Honolulu Harbor Medical Clinic sponsored by the Seafarer’s Ministry. The Seafarer’s Ministry provides spiritual, emotional, and social support for the undocumented foreign fishermen docked at Honolulu Harbor. The clinic began with few volunteers and two doctors who provided medical care to undocumented foreign fishermen from a box of supplies out of a truck. This expanded my capacity to understanding, to humbly accept circumstances and encouraged me to practice medicine with culturally sensitivity.
The Wayne State University School of Medicine has become a top choice medical school for myself due to their focuses on leadership in medicine, community mentoring and outreach, and service based learning. Centered within the urban and evolving city of Detroit, the Wayne State University School of Medicine affords its students the chance to receive their education in, and provide service within, a very rich and diverse patient population. Being immersed within, experiencing, and understanding the diversities of others allows for students and professionals alike to find their identities, meanings, and purposes through connections with people in all walks of life. In this way, Wayne State has the ability to offer its medical students an unparalleled
Emory School of Medicine provides a unique environment to mold my medical education to work within clinical care in a dynamic global community. My diverse range of experiences from my upbringing, eclectic communities I have grown in, and unique perspectives of medicine and public health I have gained through my professional pursuits will be vital to me contributing to the unique atmosphere of ingenuity at Emory that supports the development of doctors who strive to serve individuals and communities of all types. Through my research experiences, I gained a multidisciplinary understanding healthcare through different contexts, which converges on finding effective ways to communicating with people and gaining a better understanding of what goes
The Grays Harbor Community Foundation Scholarship hasn't just helped my education but it has helped me achieve my dream of going to college. Without the scholarship I don't know how I would have came up with the money to pay for college, and for that I am grateful.
My decision to apply to PSUCOM was markedly influenced by the direct student involvement with the central Pennsylvania community. The fact that PSUCOM has a strong community engagement dovetails perfectly with my interest to work with medically underserved and economically disadvantaged community. Another unique quality that I admire about PSUCOM is its supportive and nurturing environment that allows students to make connections, learn, and grow as a future physician. As a result, making connections with other students will allow me to understand and embrace the cultural diversity of others. Overall, I strongly feel that this medical program has the most to offer in terms of academic excellence, diversity, innovation, community-focus, and
My passion for science, culture, and my community is what drew me to the study of medicine. Since I was a child, my parents highlighted the importance of community. Community is more than just a group of people living in a similar area; my community is part of my identity. I am compelled to attend the Miller School of Medicine because the mission of the school aligns with the values that I want to embody as a future medical professional. In particular, the emphasis on being “culturally sensitive to our community’s needs” resonates with me because I believe that medicine should align more closely with the needs of the community and aim to advance its wellbeing. One cannot truly create a patient centered experience without acknowledging how life
The show consists of a lot of propane use and a portion of it seems to dance on the water. The show doesn't last too long, but it is entertaining.
Recently I've decided to put my college plans on hold, so I can work and earn my education. A long-term goal of mine is to eventually gain my masters in physician assistance. My short-to-medium term educational goals are obtaining a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare profession. I anticipate my long-term goal to happen after my short-to-medium term goals are met. At the bachelor’s level I look forward to working to gain the essential clinical experiences necessary to obtain an advanced degree. The idea of assisting in treatment at that level is invigorating and helps me push through hardships.
Babylon. In Bacon's NEW ATLANTIS, the need for man to be driven does not exist.
This artwork, Coral, represents her creativity. I decided to draw my sister because I wanted to express her passion for what she loves to do. I decided to include a Youtube logo because it shows that she is creative. The music notes represent that she needs music wherever she goes. Whenever she is practicing she like to have music so that she can be concentrated. I decided to draw the notes big so that it wouldn't look like the music notes are just floating, but so that it can lead the viewer's attention to the bubble. It will slowly, but gradually lead the viewer to the top. I decided to leave it white because it makes it stand out more than if I shaded it in. The music notes overlaps because it gets the attention more of the viewer so
