1. Students will work as a class to come up with ideas ideas about possible meanings and definitions of the main idea of an essay. All students will be encourage to participate in the class discussion.
2. All students will participate in an activity that will have them make use of the whiteboard. The students will read the five sentences quietly to themselves and come up with what they think is the topic sentence. No will writing will be done by the students but rather input will be verbal.
3. Students will read a handout quietly while I read out loud. The short reading is about the life of Benjamin Franklin. Students will be asked to highlight ideas, words, and sentences that they feel are important as they follow along in the reading. Then the students will divide into small groups of three or four and and share with each other what they thought was important. A group representative will then share the main ideas that the group decided upon.
4. Quietly, students will read the text to themselves and circle around the the sentence that they think is the most important sentence in the paragraph.
5. Students in the class will share their ideas about what the main idea of the essay is.
6. In a large group, students will share what they think is the main idea of the paragraph with the class. The class will come to an agreement with my help about what the main idea of the paragraph is and and I will write the topic sentence on the whiteboard.
