Registered Nurses: A Career As A Pediatric Nurse

A pediatric nurse would be the career for me because I work well with children and I find that helping children makes me happy. Being a pediatric nurse has many duties and personal characteristics needed; such as working with children and getting along with them easily. Being a pediatric nurse also requires many years of studying and also many costs, but in the end the wages and benefits make up for it. The work setting and employment outlook are looking good for the upcoming years. Having a career as a pediatric nurse requires a lot of responsibilities and duties but I feel that because I am hard working and easily get along with children this would be the right career for me.

I would like to go into the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner career field. Pediatric Nurse Practitioners help Pediatricians and other Physicians diagnose and take care of children from infancy to young adults. I have grown up with ten siblings and many more cousins, so I have learned how to deal with children of all ages. Also, I have been interested in the medical field since I was a little girl and I have always loved to help people. I would have liked to be a Pediatrician but I would prefere not be in school for another thirteen years, so I found that the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner was the perfect career for me.

Cook Children’s has achieved accreditation by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education. This is important to me as it shows the quality and integrity of the residency program and I am assured that I will receive the best training and education available to me. I enjoy learning and I believe that a residency at Cook Children’s will allow me to stay up to date with nursing skills, policies, procedures, and give me an opportunity to further my education through my experiences. In the residency program, I will complete over 1,800 hours of individual clinical experience with a nurse preceptor. The amount of individual clinical hours ensures that I will be able to start my career with confidence that will help me further as a new graduate nurse. With the high achievements that Cook Children’s has obtained, I believe that I will have an outstanding platform to begin my nursing career that will aid me in becoming a nurse with the ability to continue to learn and grow in the profession. Upon completion of this residency I expect to have a solid foundation of pediatric nursing that I can build on. Pediatric nursing is an important profession to us today. They devote their knowledge and skills to caring for children from infancy through the late teen years. Pediatric nursing does not just give you the opportunity to work with children, but with their families as well. I was inspired to become a pediatric nurse when I was younger. I remember when my little sister had to go to Kids First Pediatric to get a flu shot, my sister was so terrified of the needle she began to cry and try to move away from the nurse. In order for the nurse to calm my sister down she started making my sister laugh by playing peek-a-boo with her so that my sister could get her mind off of the needle. Once my sister was no longer thinking about the needle the nurse told my sister to count with her and on the count of three the nurse gave my sister the flu shot without my sister even noticing it. I found it so unique how a nurse could be playful with kids when they’re scared. I like working with kids so I know that this particular field is perfect for me.

Pediatric nurses do a lot of the same tasks as a regular nurse. They draw blood, check vital signs, can perform physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests. However, the job of a pediatric nurse goes beyond regular nurses. They must have a caring relationship

Though with some research, with the help of the California Career Zone Registered Nurses, it showed me the information on becoming a nurse practitioner, I could still work in pediatric care, as well as handle higher tasks. As I begin my fifth year of working as a nurse practitioner in a leading children’s hospital, I am certain the pediatric acute care setting is where I will continue my career of service to children and their families. Although I hold a masters degree in nursing and have been a primary care certified pediatric nurse practitioner for many years, I wish to expand my knowledge of pediatric nursing to encompass the unique and challenging aspects of pediatric acute care.

In addition to nursing knowledge and practical skills, pediatric nurses must also have the ability to form rapid connections with their juvenile patients. Most children are often scared to go to the doctor, so the pediatric nurse needs to be able to gain the child’s trust and to be able to dispel the fear that the child might have. You must also be able to remain calm under pressure and be a quick thinker, and also be able to smile through the most stressing situations because children can tell when an adult seems worried.

My name is Kristen Simoneaux, and I am a Sophomore here at Lamar University. I am from Nederland Texas, and I graduated from Nederland High School in 2013. I have lived in Nederland all of my life, and I continue to live here. I am going to Lamar University because it is close to home, and it has an excellent nursing program. My major is nursing, and I plan to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in May 2017. I am applying to the nursing program for the Fall of 2015, and I will spend two years in the nursing program. After I graduate, I plan to get my Masters degree and then hopefully my PhD to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I have been dancing for sixteen years at Keely Jardell’s School of Dance in Nederland Texas, and I am currently an assistant teacher there. I have been assisting for two years. I am also on the Lamar University Dance Team and have been on it for two years. This year, I am one of five officers. The Dance Team performs at all of the Lamar home football and basketball games and puts on an annual Spring show. We also do numerous community service hours.

Some other generalized duties of a pediatric nurse would be: educating patients on possible ways to help heal the injury or how much of a certain medication to take for an illness. Specific duties of this field are not that much different from the generalized duties of a pediatric nurse, but some differences are: “recording medical history and backgrounds, monitoring progress or setbacks during the patient's stay at the place of treatment, and helping perform tests and analyze the results for the patient” (“Pediatric Nurse”). For the most part, pediatric nurses only work 8 to 12 hour shifts, sometimes having to cover for a co-worker by taking a double-shift. Other quirks about this type of work environment would be that you would be “on-call at all times, you would work on holidays, and having to figure out who would be working which shift if key people were not at work that specific day” (“Summary”). Most people would not be able, or wouldn’t want to, work this way as to having to be on-call at all times of the day, and sometimes not having adequate amounts of sleep from emergency calls into

Since the development of this role during the Vietnam war, now many nurses can increase their skills, experience, and education to become one of the most prominent careers any Registered Nurses can be. Therefore, today in the United States, many Nurse Practioners can study and focus on a certain specialty units in their career such as Pediatric Nurse Practioner who can provide care for babies, young children, and school aged children. With Nurse Practioners on the rise in the nursing field, many patients are receiving more satisfactory care from them because they are taking the time to accurately assess, diagnose, and treat their patients with the proper care possible. Without Nurse Practioners, we would not have had a detailed perspective on healthcare and the patient’s health in general. Therefore, Nurse Practioners set an example for every Registered Nurses since history that they have the possibility of advancing in their careers in the medical field by expanding their skills and clinical experiences; as a result, by doing so they can get a different perspective of healthcare that no one has yet to

Some are able to become a registered nurse within 4 years and other can complete it in 2 years. The great thing about this career is the great amount of flexibility that comes with it. For pediatric nursing it begins with the bare minimum of receiving “a Bachelor of science in Nursing is a four to five year program” (“How Many Years in College to be a Pediatric Nurse?”). It is always advised to receive the most schooling and experience possible to really ensure there is a future in the career. Perusing additional schooling such as a Master’s degree will only take an additional 1-2 years of school. On top of that there is nursing school that also takes 1-3 years. School work for a nurse consists of a very vigorous course load of mathematics and different types of sciences. The minimum amount of time schooling could take to become a registered nurse is 4 years. Adding on top of that the years of training and experience needed to pursue nursing in a specialty is another 1-2 years. Pediatric Care Nurses have a demanding job that is often overlooked by most. People do not take into account how much a nurse will give to his or her patient, especially considering that patient is most likely a child between the ages of infancy to eighteen (“How Nurses”). The patients, being very young, can attribute to the amount of stress the nurse feels to do his or her best which can in some form bring an emotional factor into the mix, especially if the nurse has children himself/herself (Izumi 203). While being a pediatric care nurse, emotions play a large role in the way these professionals do their job. A step back is needed to see the emotional and physical stress these pediatric care nurses face when doing their job.

Currently 29% of the nursing work force in pediatrics has less than 2 years experience on the floor. A continued focus on ongoing education and competencies is an ongoing focus but a challenge with the limited financial resources. Offering this certification course and the contract from the nurse that they will sit for their certification in the allotted time frame is a way to go above and beyond the minimum and make sure even our novice staff meet the national pediatric nursing standard. This supports St. Luke’s goal of having % nurse certified workforce. It also prepares for facility accreditation and Magnet recertification. Currently Pediatrics has a 16% certification rate, 10 nurses with 44 nurses currently eligible to sit for the certification.
