In the 1970s, Americans and African Americans conjoined to the same school, T.C Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. Football Coach Yoast was fired and replaced by Coach Herman Boone. Tension rises as white players didn’t want to be coached by a black person. The football team ended up going to training camp in Westbury, Pennsylvania. At first they hated each other, but Coach Boone made them have respect for one another and get to know each other. By the end of training camp, the team grew closer together. They recruit guys from soccer, basketball, a farm and even other football teams to come and play for them. Lengyel has a new vision for Marshall, and calls them the “Young Thundering Herd.” Jack is the person to do things that most coaches wouldn’t do because that just in his personality. As a result he seeks out help from Bobby Bowden, the coach of the University of West Virginia. Jack asks him “if He and Dawson can see the coaches’ videos, plays, and handbooks and even if he had any tips for them.” Bowden laughs at first and asks “if Jack was serious…” He then see that the men are serious and allows them to view the tapes, rules, handbooks and anything else they wanted. He does this because Bowden understands that a team is in grief and confusion. When this happens Dawson’s disbelief that he had about the team and Jack trying to help changes and he becomes a little bit more optimistic about the future of Marshall and the town.

In 1971 Coach Herman Boone replaced a popular, successful white coach at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, in that community's effort to finally integrate its schools. The school and community were angrily divided by the federal integration order, and the volatility of the situation was heightened by the abrupt demotion of Coach Yoast and Boone's promotion to Head Coach. In this movie Coach Boone is on a mission to try to get the white and black players to unite and play together as a team. He wanted the two races to become a team. Around that time, there was a lot of racism and a lot of schools were segregated, so the players obviously didn't get along with each other at first. A lot changed when Boone replaced Yoast

After Gerry’s disastrous car accident, Coach Boone is faced with the moral dilemma of selfishness. Boone has always been a coach who strives to win, not only for himself, but for the team, however after the accident, he lacks empathy for the boys and thinks more about what he wants. In the beginning of the movie, Coach Boone had to build ethos for himself because of racial differences. Coach Boone, being of African American descent, was hired over their current caucasian coach and this caused the white football players to boycott the team until Coach Yoast became their assistant coach. Coach Boone lead his team by example and his dedication to his craft. He showed the players that he did not care about what color you wore on your skin, but of the sport that brought them together. During his speech he states “I don’t care if you like each other or not. But you will respect each other. And maybe, I don’t know, maybe we’ll learn to play this game like men” (Boone). He uses the built trust aspect of ethos very well to close this speech.

All Boone wanted to do was talk to Coach Yoast about their game plan for the season. Moreover, Boone repeatedly appears to be a racial target throughout the movie, especially, when he is threatened with the probability to lose his job if he squandered their chance of winning even one game. Since the school board was never supportive of the black and white team integration, they made an artful plan to rig the referring of the regional game. This was to make sure that the Titans and the coach would have to relocate. To make matters worse, Yoast was promised by the school board to appear on the hall of fame if he gets Boone fired. However, through all the discrimination and prejudiced forces that constantly went against the coach's’ and team’s will, the team won the state

In the movie, Coach Boone is a master motivator. He does an excellent job of energizing his players, sustaining the motivation, directing the motivation to the right players at the right time, and also knowing when to stop motivating. The satisfaction progression hypothesis is also displayed in the movie. Coach Boone knows that the small things, such as making the routine plays in the game, must be done first before the main goal can be achieved, winning the game. He also has a high expectancy of his team. He believes that the effort of his team will lead to performance and that the performance will lead to results. He expects his team to practice just as hard as they play in the game. Julius Campbell and Gary Bertier, the two main characters on the team, are also excellent motivators. They get their teammates pumped up before and during the game.

Boone and his family face horrible experiences when moving to Alexandria. When moving to the neighborhood, many neighbors were so upset but many were also happy that he didn’t back down. He was offered the head coach position but turned it down because he felt it would be incredibly disrespectful to Coach Yoast. Boone & Yoast agreed to make the relationship work. The African American students meet with Coach Boone in the gym, the meeting turns into a disaster when Coach Yoast and the white students arrive and disturb the meeting. Gerry Bertier was one of the students among the crowd of white students to interrupt. “I’m Gerry Bertier. I’m the only All-America you got on this team. If you want us to play for you, you reserve over half the positions …we don’t need any of your people on defense we’re already set.” said by Gary Bertier to Coach Boone. Boone makes it clear that all players will be on the team regardless of the color of their skin.

When they first came together, there was a significant amount of vying and jockeying for power, between the players and the coaches. The leader of the white players (Gerry) tried to assert himself to Coach Boone early, but the coach made sure Gerry knew his place. A coach is a leader and must take charge if a player oversteps his boundaries. The difference in the coaching styles also showed early on, as both coaches had different objectives. Coach Boone, who was fighting to keep his job, was almost like a drill instructor and demanding. While Coach Yoast was more lenient towards the players and more hesitant to yell at them. This may have been due to the fact that Yoast was told that the head coaching job was his if Boone lost a game.

Coach Boone’s values were clear from the beginning; race was not to be considered. Those who work hard enough and do what is expected will play football. Those who do not, will sit on the bench. The same was expected from the coaching staff; if they did not want to be there, they were free to go. Coach Boone was fine finding another staff member who was willing

Herman Boone is a black man and head coach of the football team, his perfectionist tendencies come across as tough. But his toughness is fair; he treats all his players equally whether they're black or white. Boone's style of coaching is different than coach Bill Yoast, a white man, highly respected both as a coach and member of the community. Yoast cares a great deal about his players, enough to stay and work as the assistant coach when Boone is unexpectedly offered the head coaching position over him.

One important character in the film Remember the Titans, directed by Boaz Yakin, was Coach Boone, Boone is displayed as a hardworking, and would get what he wanted, this showed in a quote spoken by Boone and Yoast walking down the stairs; “I don’t scratch my head unless it itches and I don’t dance unless I hear some Music, that's just the way it is.” I believe this sums up the type of person Coach Boone is as the words show that he is capable and will not be taken for granted, some techniques that helped me to see this were; Camera Shots, Dialogue, and Costume.

The movie plot surrounded the main character of Coach Boone, an African American football coach who transferred to a new school district that has just been desegregated. Coach Boone is a leader, not only as the head of a football team but an influence of positive change. He uses his legitimate power when first approaching his new team, then uses referent and reward power as team cohesion increases. He defined the team and set difficult goals with clear performance expectations when he tells the players he expects perfection. He accomplishes this perfection through leading and influencing others, like the team captains and his assistant coach. When Coach Boone first met his players he announced that no one would be cut from the team. He allowed his captains to decide who the undesirable members were and for them to decide to cut the players themselves. Coach Boone was also quick to identify his key stakeholders, the players. This allowed him to focus his efforts on the team atmosphere and organizational commitment and not on his new position.
