The art I chose isThe rape by René Magritte. I think this art should be censored because it is a condemnation to men, and it shows how a society of men view women. The image shows how the female sexuality is formed. In the image, the female eyes has been replaced by her breasts, her nose by her belly button, and her mouth by her pubis. I defined art as the skills and images created from a person's imagination and view about life. However, I do not think that this is art because it doesn't show a person's view about life, rather it shows how a person thinks about when he sees a man, and not all men think like this. This not only damages the lives of men, it also shows the way women are treated constantly, and how they are seen as people with
A Rape in the Early Republic, edited by Randall L. Hall, is the complete text of the John Deskins Trial which was compiled by Alexander Smyth, a prominent congressman and attorney in the Deskins case. This early in American legal history, rape trials were rare and when they occurred, there was little-to-no documentation of the cases. For example, John Deskins was the only rapist to go to jail in 1806 . This recount is significant to the development of legal history because it addresses gender and sexual misconduct cases in the early republic. During this time, the United States legal system was constantly changing to reflect changes and developments in society, making this case pivotal in legal history. In order to remain true to Smyth’s
Ruined by Lynn Nottage is a powerful play that narrates the nearly normalized issue of sexual violence against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Nottage personally traveled to the DRC and interviewed the victimized women and created a play that is based on their stories. She composed a very powerful play that made its audience to become aware of tragic situations that take place in African countries today. Throughout the play, Nottage brings the reader to raise several questions, such as why did these vulnerable women become the target of violence and what drives militiamen to commit these crimes rather than protecting them.
Also, in my discussion I reflected on how, “this image is culturally important because it represents that females can be strong and powerful.” I never realized how much art can reflect upon the society and how important the media is when it. There are a lot of politics in art, but not all art forms can be pleasing to the viewers, it’s about doing what you like and there is no need to adjust your point of view. There are so many different types of art forms, and I’m glad we experienced and learned about them in this class. I have ultimately formed a love for different art forms, and can’t wait to experience them in the future.
In Livy’s story the “Rape of Lucretia,” the writer illustrated prime examples on how gender is represented in Roman society. The assumptions of both men and women roles within the Roman Empire are defined and presented within this legend. The expectations of men, women, and honor are identified to provide examples of the conventions about gender in Roman society. Men in the legend were presented as being heavy drinkers and strong. On the other hand, women were represented as being pure and weak in the eyes of men. The contrasting views of both men and women help illustrate the assumptions about gender in Roman society defined in the story.
In the Livy Stories on of the thing addressed were the: Rape of Sabine woman, and The Rape of Lucretia. The author shows us how the Romans viewed women in that time. The Romans women were portrayed as worthless, power, no-name and weak objects. In the story of the Rape of Lucretia, Sextus rapes Lucretia because she is better than his wife. He thought that she was nothing and that was just an object.
Minority groups have always been marginalized and bellowed by our current justice system in society within these groups are women, this leads to questioning the role of the justice system in perpetuating violence in for example Native American groups. In the U.S. the justice system has failed to protect these women specifically Native American women from sexual violence, and what worsens the case is that more often than not their attackers are let off easy or escape punishment altogether because of federal, state and tribal jurisdictions. In the Round House by Louise Erdrich which is set in 1988 and in The Beginning and End of Rape by Sarah Deer one can see how the U.S. rape laws fail to provide justice to Native Americans who suffer rape and actually contribute to
In the 18th century almost every English life was influenced by gender and this affected attitude to rape cases. A woman was viewed as the weaker sex and were likely to be more immoral. These views about women’s weakness, immoralities and being too emotional affected attitudes to rape and getting justice. Susan Brown miller, a feminist argued that throughout history, rape was a social control mechanism to keep a patriarchal dominated society. According to her, “it is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear”. Historically, it has been found that rape is the force men use to control women due to social construction during the 18th century. The perception of women in the 18th century resulted into the negative attitude to rape and the shortcomings in the justice system.
Sarah Silverman is the first to write saying that she believes all art should be allowed and that artists should be free to make what they want. She also makes the point that no one could possibly say what art should and shouldn’t be aloud because then where would we draw the line. I like her opinion on this because it’s a solid point, and it a point few can argue with.
- The lines of traditional art have blurred over the years as new artistic movements have appeared and transformed the notion of what is considered art. As these movements have revolutionized the art world, popular culture has branched off from art, causing a shift; art is no longer a representation of popular culture and visa versa. In contemporary society art doesn’t exist to win any popularity contests, it exists to please the viewer, and is often deemed art by highly acclaimed art critics who don't speak from a popular culture standpoint. Art highly regarded by critics often goes against the grain and makes a statement, while popular culture is dictated by what the general public likes,
This question was made to get past the “ I’ll know it when I see it” (TTU Political Science Department 2015) viewpoint and get straight down to the point of the object under scrutiny. The second one is,” does it describe or depict sexual conduct in an offensive way?” (TTU Political Science Department 2015) Albeit, the word offensive can vary from person to person but using the previous example the painting was of a Greek sculpture, and no graphic words were added to the painting. The reason for this question is to show the meaning behind the work which helps aid in the third question. Finally, the third is “does the work lack any artistic, political, literary or scientific value?” (TTU Political Science Department 2015) The last question is meant to tie all of the previous questions
Controversial pieces of art are nothing new; artists express their opinions and beliefs in their work, and those who see the artist’s views as problematic speak out against it. Art encourages debate, and debates can be angry and emotion-driven. But when a piece of art is created that is almost universality looked upon as having corrupt morals, the debate tends to switch “I disagree with what this art portrays” to, “this work of art should not be allowed in society, regardless of its quality.”
17.7 million: The number of women who have been involved in attempted or completed rape. 293,066: The number of rapes in the U.S. a year. 284,275: The number of sexual offences that result in no conviction or jail time. 49,013: The number of repeat offenders still on the streets, most committing around 6 rapes. 4,000-17,000: The range of pregnancies resulting from rape. 107: The number of seconds between rapes in the U.S. 35: the percentage of men that would rape if they knew they could get away with it. 3: The number of rapes, out of 100, that will result in any prison time at all. 1: the number of likely victims that will seek help or justice for what happened. The statistics show that a woman is more at risk of sexual assault in the U.S. than in any other developed nation. The United States has one of the highest rape rates in the world. Yet there are still those out there that don’t believe that rape actually exists. Victims of rape are forced into a societal confinement that encapsulates them in their own self solitude.
“It Isn’t pretty...But Is It Art?” is an article about Aesthtic judgment, Mack list three public diputes about art to express most people’s aesthtic. The fist dipute is “Harry Potter”. Which is a successful lititerary work, but it had also suffered a lot of people questioned and protest, becuase it’s literature contain carried a lot of evil word such as “dark” and “death”. “Holy Virgin Mary” by painter Chris ofili Chris
Art has multiple purposes. Some people enjoy art for the emotional engagement they receive while viewing it. Happy or pretty things give us hope; sad things make us feel less alone in our sadness. Other people see art as a way to balance who they are as a human. Where some people see propaganda others see a reminder of what is truly important in life (Schooloflifechannel). No matter what the reason, art is a vital part of the community not easily forgotten. One thing, however, is constantly on the mind of viewers, and that is the question of what each work of art means beyond the superficial, to the language only truly understood by the human soul. Art communicates, not by audible words, but instead by symbols and metaphors that can be so
There will be bad character, ill-discipline, meanness, and ugliness unavoidably invading the lives of the children because that's the way people are. The reason that artist might choose to represent those aspects in their artwork is that it is a reflection of life. The work is a manifestation of the artist subjective perspective of their reality and to think that is possible to conceal those parts of life from a child is naive, and the efforts of your censorship with be fruitless. Banksy once said, “ Art must confront the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.” When one sees this disturbing and disgusting pieces, they must realize, under the penalty of meaninglessness, that it is an artist's response and is provoking the viewer's rebuttal. The world shall exist the way until the cleansing fire of Zorp releases from the perils of our mortal shackles. To live fully and unequivocally true, we must not shield ourselves from the poets that don't portray good character and expose our minds and our children to the artist that do unveil bad character, ill-discipline, meanness or ugliness in painting, sculpture, architecture, or any work of art: we must be
