The Renaissance challenged the status quo of the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, the Church had authority over most people. These people also had limited rights. All of this changed during the Renaissance. This period of time focused on the philosophy of humanism, which embodied the idea that humans were a significant part of the world. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man through the institutions of literature, astronomy, anatomy, and art.

The Renaissance is a period in Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age. The Renaissance changed the view of man on the world from how man viewed the world during the middle ages. The purpose of this essay is to show how the Renaissance changed the way man viewed the world. The world was changed in the views of Art, Literature, and Science.

The renaissance, meaning 're-birth', was a time of reformation of culture to the ideals of society. The people of the time, tired of the war and fear during the Middle Ages, looked to the ancient Romans and Greeks for direction in civilized life. As the Renaissance progressed, the purposes and values of education experienced major reformations.

The shift between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance was characterized by great socio-economic, political, and religious changes. Politically, the feudal system of the Middle Ages was exchanged for a more stable centralized republic/monarchy system that gave the people more freedom and input. Religiously, secularism became more important as stability gave people a chance to concern themselves with the “here and now” rather than simply the “hereafter.” Socially, there was a shift from dogma and unshakeable belief to humanism and the ability to interpret things for oneself. How did the change in time period, technological advancements, and overall lifestyle affect man’s view of man? In the 1400’s, the Middle Ages had ended and the Renaissance was just beginning. During the Middle Ages, the church held most of the power, giving people few rights. This and many other things changed during the Renaissance that lasted for about 250 years. The Renaissance affected how man viewed itself. Man’s view of man was changed during the Renaissance by art, literature, and science/astronomy.

During the Renaissance, people began to stray away from the Catholic Church, and began thinking for themselves. While doing so, people began to reconnect to old Roman traditions. Subsequently, the Enlightenment was born soon after. The Enlightenment was a new way of thinking also known as The Age Of Reason. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes are two famous philosophers of the Enlightenment that are known for having two different views on government.

Since the beginning of humans views of ideas have changed for over thousands of years, but one of the most influential moments of change was the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a time of when many ideas were introduced, for example, Humanism is one. However, with views about new ideas introduced that meant the change of old views. The advancement of science in the Renaissance contributed to the belief and rapid advancement in modern Europe. Scientific advancement had always been present, however a large portion of the Renaissance worldview was the desire to learn about the world around us, and even, in the case of the human body, the vast and unexplored world within us. This worldview and belief is still present today, with scientists working around the globe to explore parts of the world and universe we previously were not aware of. Undoubtedly the Renaissance altered the course of human history, and the effects are still apparent in modern culture. The diagram that Vesalius was not his only piece which gave him the prestigious title of ‘The father of human anatomy’. Vesalius also made countless more diagrams, all relatively accurate to what the human body looks like, these diagrams were published in a book that he published in 1543 called the ‘De Humani Corporis Fabrica’. These diagrams included diagrams of muscles, ligaments, blood vessels, the digestive system, the heart and even the nerves in the human body. These discoveries were ground breaking when he released them in his book. This book shows that Vesalius was absolutely one of the greatest thinkers of his time because he was almost the only thinker of this style, everyone else was far too scared to do anything.

When the study of human anatomy first began doctors knew very little about the human body and the functions of internal organs. He was a person that started to question everything. He invented a way to apply logic to his theories, questioning accepted views. Being able to walk down the streets of Florence, Italy and experience this time period that not only gave rebirth to old values and artistic ways of statement, but also were a period of great individualism.
