Renaissance DBQ During the Renaissance time period, each man and woman needed to strive to meet the “ideal” image that was expected by society. If this image was not met, the person would be judged by society. Both males and females had different goals that they needed to meet in education, as well as in their lives. While there was an “ideal” image, some people disagreed with them. There was always a distinct role for both women and men, but within those roles, there could be controversy. There were certain aspects of learning that he emphasized more than the others. Not only did he focus on major works that the people should know but also on “…writing in verse and prose…” (3) Castiglione had the ideal image in his mind of exactly what people needed to be and the way they should act. When he said this, it was greatly respected because of his writing of his well-known conduct book. However, people began to veer away from this ideal of a needed education; it became a major change for society. Later on, in the Letter to the Parlement of Dijon concerning the reopening of a French Jesuit school, it was explicitly said that all men do not need an education. Some men need to do work that is not based off of education; they need to do the basics that make society properly function. “The study of literature is appropriate only to a small minority of men.” This statement explicitly says that an education is not for everyone, boldly going against Castiglione. (11) This was a bold statement to make, because it showed a drastic change in people’s point of view of a proper man. Along with saying not all people needed to be educated, there was also the vast criticism of the school system and the way it was teaching. After the Roman time, the dark age took over, it was called the dark ages not only because of the lack of written sources but also because of the nasty short and brutal lives of the time. Some thought that the dark ages were a necessary evil, to get rid of slavery. The Eastern half not only survived after the fall of Rome but flourished. The Eastern empire continued to thrive and build monuments under the rule of Justinian Ⅰ. Even though no longer part of a Roman civilization, western people still thought of themselves as Roman.
Enslaved people resisted their enslavement by refusing to do work, running away, and fighting back, this is historically significant because it affected millions of people and is still relevant today. Did you know that in 1619, over 12.5 million western Africans were captured to be owned by their masters, dehumanized, and tortured for not obeying? Some ways slaves would resist their enslavement are they worked slower, misunderstood orders, broke tools, sabotaged crops, stole from their enslavers and learned to read and write. The leaders of innovation during a certain time period frequently cause people to rethink the ideas that were considered facts. Revolutionary is the only way to describe these influential acts executed by people who, by extent of these acts, changed the way the world considered logic. During the Renaissance, the trailblazers of progression forced the world to revise the way with which they imagined human knowledge by not only creating masterpieces of art and literature, but also by challenging the beliefs that were deeply ingrained in society.
During the shift from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, humanist thinkers and writers showed distinct changes in the areas such as art and literature. After the shift, men developed different viewpoints on status and individuality. Moreover, life on the earth was being enjoyed by a simple Renaissance men. The responsibility of power was shifting from the church to the royals during the movement. By looking at the various outlooks of men, what men focused on, and why power was shifting, one could see that the Renaissance was not just a high point but the rebirth of opportunities.
Change is difficult, but inevitable in life. Change like this occurs in the time period of the Renaissance. The Renaissance is considered “the rebirth” or “the early modern period.” This time in history was a time of enlightenment, from the 14th century to the 17th century, they attempted to reapply and resemble the intellectual learning of the Greek and Roman civilizations. These new ideas received neglect from those who are afraid of change.
A is incorrect because the Harlem actually helped resolve racial attitudes among the different races. Although the Harlem had little impact on stopping Jim Crow laws, some people believe that the greatest impact of the Harlem was to reinforce race pride among black people. B is correct because many African Americans left the South because of the caste system so they could freely express their talents. African Americans wanted to be able to show off their talents that they had throughout their culture. They believed that it was not fair that white people could show off their culture, but they could not.
The Harlem renaissance was a time where black was beautiful, a cultural, social and artistic explosion between 1910 and the 1930’s. It was an artistic movement full of high, and folk art. It was when African Americans finally embraced who they are and proved they are as good as Americans. The Harlem renaissance was named after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. Folk art was showing everyday life and dialect, which was written the way it was said, for example in Langston Hughes’s poem homesick blues uses common dialect (doc d).
Women were also expected to maintain their social positivity and kindness by never speaking or listening to evil about other women. Men hearing these women speak evil would appear to “listen gladly” but ultimately “hold such women in small respect” and “esteem them so lightly as to despise their company” (177.) From the accounts held in The Courtier of women in the Renaissance, it can be said that women were almost considered to be “status symbols” during this time period. Some men aimed to treat women with courtesy and respect but never viewed them as true equals. Women were expected not to make a fuss, not to speak up too loudly, and to act positive and apolitical at every turn, resulting in a stifling lack of agency. As a whole, women were expected to be seen and not heard, ultimately having a scarce role in the era. Even still, misogyny and hatred was ubiquitous in this time period.
For the arguments of those who support agency roles for women in the period, as well as, supportive of the Renaissance positively affecting women, the discussion turns to Pamela Benson, Stanley Chojnacki, George McClure, Caroline Murphy, and Sarah Ross. As the field grows, most now look at the period as ambiguous, which acknowledges the many advances women gained, but also the harsh realities in which both men and women lived. The Renaissance was a time of enlightenment and discovery around the world. There were many advancements in culture, art, and science. An interesting area to look at for this period would be the advancements made based on gender. Historically, women do not always have a significant impact on their culture, and they do not always have the same standing as their male counterparts. Margaret L. King and Joan Kelly-Gadol delve deeper into the issue of gender advancements during the Renaissance when they analyze the issue of whether women and men benefitted equally during this period.
In the late Middle Ages, women were forced under many disabilities. Society viewed women as “physically, intellectually, and morally inferior to men” (Bornstein 1). In the 1300’s when Dante wrote the Divine Comedy women did not play a key role in society outside the home. This was not solely excluding a certain sex because of who they were, but because of how society in history has viewed women. Many believed that women could not do a man’s job or fit to be in charge of a certain group. In the 1300’s, women were to be in charge of the household, take care of the children, make the food for the day, and be a loyal wife to their husbands. The purpose of the book Women of the Renaissance by Margaret King is to explain the various roles of that women occupied during the renaissance. She mainly focusses on women of western Europe between 1350 and 1650. In the chapter titled “Daughters of Eve: Women in the Family” King writes about the positions of women in the family. In the part of the chapter that we were assigned, she depicts the role of mother. She explains the importance having children, the differences between healthy and lower class mothers, and the relationship between these mothers and their children. During the renaissance, motherhood was an extremely important job, and many women were defined by it.
The Renaissance challenged the status quo of the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, the Church had authority over most people. These people also had limited rights. All of this changed during the Renaissance. This period of time focused on the philosophy of humanism, which embodied the idea that humans were a significant part of the world. The Renaissance changed man’s view of man through the institutions of literature, astronomy, anatomy, and art.
Throughout history, men and women have been assigned specific roles to which society prescribes standards and qualifications. There are certain tasks that have been traditionally completed only by men, and others that have been assigned to women; most of which are separated by the realm of the domestic sphere. During the period of the Renaissance, men and women were assigned very different roles within society. The value, social expectations, legal status, and rights of citizenship differed greatly between the sexes as well as among the classes. Many of these gender roles can be identified through careful readings of the literature produced throughout the Renaissance.
Women in Renaissance Italy faced rigid societal standards to which they were supposed to conform. They lived public lives, directed almost exclusively by other people in regards to significant decisions. However, this does not mean that a rise above the oppressive nature of the Renaissance was impossible. Several exceptional women were able to challenge their given positions in a society through their education, practices, seclusion, beauty, and roles. In an examination of several positions, through the Exhortations to Women and to Others If They Please by Lucrezia Marinella and the letters of Laura Cereta, a Renaissance feminist, women can be seen as accepting of their position in society or rebelling against it. Their lives and prescriptive writings show how one can either follow the role given to them or exceed beyond it and become an exceptional woman.
