I would not support the repealing of the seventeenth amendment. The seventeenth amendment states that the people are able to vote for the senator directly instead of allowing the state legislator to appoint them. Before 1913 the state legislators were able to appoint someone as senator. Then their was the change in the constitution and their had to be a reason why the constitution was changed. My way of looking at it is that the people should have the right to vote for the senator because it would be unfair if the state legislator cause. In Pennsylvania we have a mostly republican state legislator if the legislator were to appoint a senator it would most likely be a republican. This would cause problems considering they do not take in to consideration
carried on afterward. The most prominent effect of these was the financial hit that local and state
The progress income tax has always been a number goal for socialism. During the Eighteenth Amendment, they forbid manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquor which went into effect in 1920. It was very important for the working class on the 18th amendment. The working class men still on the home front were too busy working overtime to contribute to the war effort to have either the time or energy to show their disapproval to the amendment. Congress labor contended the 18th Amendment would violate on individual liberty. For the Nineteenth Amendment, they fasten the states from using sex as qualification for suffrage. It was also for women’s suffrage, is to expanded liberty for female
To understand the controversy around the seventeenth Amendment we must first understand it. We have to first understand the ideas it supports and fears that it erases for many. The 17th Amendment as written in the Constitution states, “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each state shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the Legislatures.” (The Constitution of the United States). Now what this means is that there are 100 senators total, that gives each state two political representatives. This ensures that all fifty states receive equal representation. However, it wasn’t always
There were a number of things that went into effect after the ruling of Dred Scott. The new president had gone into office but not yet been inaugurated. There had always been discussions about the political climate during the decision, and if in fact President Buchanan swayed the decision. President Buchanan did write a letter to one of the chief justice’s where he expressed a desire both for the case to be decided before March 1857, and for a verdict that would place the debate on slavery beyond politics and thereby calm popular agitation on the subject, Buchanan had gone further and persuaded another Associate Justice – who was from the North – to vote with the Southern majority (Richards). The decision accounted for most of the Republican gain; victories by “slave power” had produced a backlash that strengthened its deadliest enemies of the north (McPherson 188).
As a result of the surge of progressivism in the early 1900’s, America changed the method of electing Senators. The Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution ushered in a new age; Senators became popularly elected. The article, How Tuesday’s Primaries Will Affect Who Controls the Senate Next Year, shows the importance of this Amendment even today. According to the article, “Democratic voters will weigh in on three Senate primary races”(). This shows the relevance of the amendment since before its adoption, a state legislature would appoint their Senator. Nowadays, the people can elect their leaders through primaries. While the many today consider the amendment beneficial by making Senators responsible for the people, it is not universally
Housing soldiers was a common practice militaries used for shelter. It was a form of home invasion by the government, and prohibiting this gave citizens more sense of security to their property, and not involving them in the war which they aren’t fighting. Although, the only time that soldiers need housing is when we mobilize soldiers, otherwise they should be at bases. As much as this was relevant in the 1800’s, we haven’t had a need to use civilian’s homes for military purposes. There isn’t much to say about this amendment anymore.
The nineteenth amendment that's for the “U.S constitution grants the women suffrage or the right to vote”. A person name Blackwell started the women's movement to help end it. Some people have had been accused of the needs of a upper and middle class of white women. Which they had attempted to “extend social and economic benefits to border” the range for the women who suffer. On January 1848 a girl name Elizabeth Candy Stanton and lucretia Mott called the first woman's rights convention in seneca falls. They didn't really like how the women were getting treated. the women marched in the parade and made speeches. It also gave men the right to vote.it joined forces in 1890 under the name
Colorado voters do not realize how easy they have made it for children to obtain marijuana. When Amendment 64 was passed, an already troublesome condition escalated to a more dangerous level for our youth. School officials are “reporting an increase in marijuana-related incidents in middle and high schools” (Nancy Lofholm). Sadly, parents smoke openly, in front of their children. Now that they can legally obtain one ounce of marijuana, they do not see the need to keep the drugs out of sight. Once in plain sight, kids have more access to marijuana to share or sell with their peers. Easy availability of weed to minors has very harmful effects on the young mind. Amendment 64 needs to be altered to include more stringent controls to keep the
1984 brought change to the United States of American, but South Dakota did not want any part of it. In 1984, the United States passed a law saying that people needed to be 21 years of age to purchase and consume alcohol that was considered low point beer. In the years prior it was 19 years of age to purchase and consume low point beer that had 3.2% of alcohol. Any states that did not comply with the new law would hold five percent of their road funding from the Secretary of Transportation that would go toward rebuilding highways across America. If any states did not comply it the five percent rate jumped to ten percent each and every following year after.
The Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on June 15, 1804 as a result of the two previous disastrous elections of 1796 and 1800. This amendment addressed a problem that existed in the Constitution regarding the elections of the President and Vice-president.
Introduced by Texas Senator Lyndon B. Johnson in 1954 and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, The Johnson Amendment is a provision in United States tax codes prohibiting 501(c)(3) organizations from participation in endorsing or opposing political candidates.
A proposed constitutional amendment for the Colorado Constitution that would have placed restrictions on marijuana businesses was withdrawn last week by the amendment’s supporting group.
Article Five of the United States Constitution primarily describes the process whereby the constitution itself may be altered. Altering the constitution consist of proposing an amendment or a subsequent ratification. Article Five therefore explanatory shows two ways the constitution may be amended. One that has been mainly used for all of the amendments throughout our constitution, where the amendment is adopted by congress (i.e. Senate and House of Representatives i.e. Legislative Branch) with a vote of two-thirds of both houses or the other which has been only used once where they threw out the article of confederation and adopted the constitution itself being a constitutional convention (E.g. The Convention of Philadelphia) with the requirement
The two men peacefully protesting in this picture represent the american population and the african american man represents how the american justice system tends to accuse black people of crimes instead of white people. The police represent our justice system. The constitutional amendment being questioned in this cartoon is the fourteenth amendment. The fourteenth gives everyone equal protection under the law and these two men who are completely equal are getting far from equal treatment by our police. The African American is being asked for a permit and the white male wasn't even questioned, when he is holding the same sign as the black man. The artist feels strongly about the fact that there has been unequal treatment to people in america
In the 28th Amendment, what I am trying to establish into our current Constitution, is having much to do with anti-gun control. Essentially, I am going to make new gun laws that will make it easier to buy a gun, but also have many more processes in order to get a gun license which is needed in order to purchase a gun. I am, as of right now, against a few of the gun rules we have. I also believe that we need to not only make it harder, but almost impossible for a citizen of the U.S. that has a criminal record, to purchase/have any kind of gun. Here are a few ways I am going to make a great effort to establish a few new gun control laws in our Constitution.
