The 1978 movie "Grease," tells a story of two young teenagers who fall in love with each other during their summer vacation. As the season ends, however, the teenagers realize that their secret romance will also have to come to a close, as Sandy has to return home to Australia. The two think that they will never see each other again but in a twist of fate Sandy's parents decide to stay in America where Sandy would finish her senior high school year. I chose to watch and write about this film because I think it is interesting and puzzling how a movie that portrays women in such disrespectful ways continues to exist as one of the history's most iconic films. It is important to mention one major flaw in the film's many gender-based stereotypical messages. Perhaps the most obvious negative message in regards to women is the portrayal of the character played by Olivia Newton-John. As the movie begins, Sandy is depicted as an innocent and virtuous young girl. Her love for the boy she meets at the beach is pure and romantic. As the story progresses, the character continues to carry herself in a pure and honorable ways despite being pressured into engaging in not so innocent activities. It seems, however, that despite Sandy's rejection of becoming one of the ‘bad girls,' her whole existence is so desperately focused on getting back with the boy who not only rejected her, but also continued to act inappropriately throughout the rest of the story. In the end, Sandy changes her attitude and her image and accepts the ‘bad girl' ways in efforts to recover her relationship with Danny. The message here is quite negative as it reinforces the notion that women should lose their individuality and succumb to certain pressures and expectations to achieve their goals. In the film's case, it is a girl who wants …show more content…
The roles portrayed in the movie are well developed and compliment each other as well as the final outcome of the story. Although the males in the movie play a crucial part, it is the females who contribute to the viewer's ability to watch and understand the story from various angles and
Gender issues were also prevalent in this movie. In the beginning of the movie Bruno is playing with his friends before moving to the country. They are playing soldier and pretending to shoot and kill each other, while his sister Gretel was playing with her dolls. Mom is seen coming home from a shopping trip with some packages. Gender roles are “patterns of attitude and behavior that a society expects of its members because they are female or male” (Thio, 224). Throughout the movie gender roles are seen as the mom stays home and takes care of the children while the dad is working. As well Gretel the sister is always portrayed as sweet while Bruno is portrayed as an adventurous boy who likes soldiers. Men are also portrayed as strong, while the women in the movie are portrayed as weak.

“The Fall of the Female Protagonist in Kids’ movies” by Stefan Babich explains the role of
The film has many perspectives towards a gender. For example, the females are totally opposite. Kat Stratford is shown as brave, independent, athlete, intelligent, not feminine girl while her sister is totally the opposite. Bianca is feminine, popular, well-dressed, sweet and naïve. At the end they complement each other because one learns from the other. For example, Bianca punches Joey in defending her beliefs about what she thinks is correct. On the other side, Kat goes to prom because she finally understands that she has to allow her sister experience things by herself. Now, on the male side there are three types of boys: the humble, the rude and the handsome. Cameron shows a humble man, whose love is pure and sincere. Verona changes the idea of rude guys by showing that he is willing to humiliate himself in order to get Kat’s attention and pardon. Finally, Joey shows the type of guy whose love is only to himself and will never be able to truly love
I feel that this film is neither anti-male nor anti-female. Although I do not think it is anti-male it does put men in a negative light and makes them seem stupid. Some examples of this are the truck driver on the high way. He is disgusting and is twirling his tongue at them making sexual remakes. He is portrayed like a pig and has seems to be very stupid. Another example of this is the cop who they lock in the trunk. Some more examples are Thelma’s husband who is very stupid and controlling. All of the men in the movie fit the male stereotype as stupid, controlling, mean, and only want sex. I do think the men were stereotyped and definitely put in a negative light, but that is something women face all the time in movies and media and that
The theme of gender is presented to the audience as dramatic irony as well, since this play was written in 1912, the play shows how women were in that certain period of time, they didn’t have as many rights, they weren’t treated equally with men, in fact they were seen to be lower than men. However in the time that this play was written which is 1945 women had a lot more rights due to the fact that when men left the country for war, which according to Mr.Birling wasn’t supposed to happen, all the women were the people who looked after the country and kept it going, women became more interdependent and the society just grew and became a lot more open minded with their thoughts. JB Priestly has tried to show the importance of women in the play as well in the play as well at some places but very indirectly, like in that part where the inspector says, “There are a lot of young women living that sort of existence in every city and big towns in this
To get us started, how do the roles and identities of women in this play compare to that of the male figures?
Grease is a classic American film that takes place in the 1950s and explores ideas of gender and sexuality. The film was produced in 1978 by Robert Stigwood and Allen Carr and was directed by Rundel Kleiser. The film was not set in the 1970s because it would have to tell a different story; in the 1970s there was birth control and an abundance of sexual liberation, unlike the 1950s. The producers were able to connect the concepts of events from the 1950s into the film. Grease explores the ideas of gender and sexuality through specific gender roles. On one hand, there are characters in the film who are sexually good and are innocent, they are pure. On the other hand, there are characters who are sexually bad and have a tendency to sin,
The film sets a certain viewpoint on gender. It labels men and woman a certain way. Women in the film are set to be delicate and sex-driven. Men are set to be tough, brutal, workers. Marla was played by a thin, attractive, petite actress. Her clothes were always feminine. Tyler was played by a fit, muscled man that fit society's definition of attractive. The movie made it clear that men are masculine, and women are feminine. Basow said, “Gender is constructed by every socializing agent and force in society: parents, teachers, the media,
The male gaze puts his fantasy onto the female figure, which is styled, in a unique sort of way. In this traditional exhibitionist, role women are continuously being looked at and their appearance is delivered to the male gaze in such a way as a strong visual and erotic impact and provides male desire. The presence of a woman in a normal narrative film is the key of the movie. However, the key of the narrative film works against the development of the story-line and stops the action due to the erotic gaze. Butt Boetticher said: “What counts is what the heroine provokes, or rather what she represents. She is the one, or rather the love or fear she inspires in the hero, or else the concern he feels for her, who makes him act the way he does. In herself the woman has not the slightest importance”.
The film Mr. & Ms. Smith allows a male dominant role to be given to a female lead. The cast, plot, and cinematography all played a part in giving the character Jane a male dominant lead. The director did an excellent job of showing how reversing the roles of gender can work and it worked well within this film. It is important for film’s to incorporate women as the dominant lead. This allows women to be viewed to be just as strong as a male.
Male characters easily speak their minds, they outnumber the women characters, and they have a lot more action going on for the audience to see. Therefore, they have a more dramatic impact than women.
The film appeals to its target audience by many different features. For men there
All over the world Feminism is a current topic of concern and there are very few advocates who are currently fighting for gender equality. In the media men and women are attempting to use their voices to fight for equal rights and get the message across to all generations. In this paper, I will be analyzing the movie Beauty and the Beast (2017) by drawing upon the feminist theory, which will demonstrate how the main female character, Belle challenges the modern-day system of inequality and the socially constructed gender roles. I will do so by examining why Emma Watson was chosen as the leading actress, how Belle is different than the other women in her town, the modifications from the original movie, and how Belle ultimately gets to decide her destiny. I will also consider why some people may view the film as anti-feminist, which will allow for me to understand a different perspective. It is my thesis that socially constructed gender identities are negatively presented in popular culture, however actors and actresses are attempting to use their influence to make an impact and move towards equality.
In the end, each character has played a role based on the expectations society creates. The men and women all have their own ways of manipulating one another. “The woman is judged by society under the man’s law (Rosefeldt).” Society’s expectations of woman back
