The topic of reproductive rights surrounding women in Texas has been a hot buttoned issue since the closing of many reproductive centers across the state. Recently damaging abortion restrictions were passed and therefor encroach on women’s reproductive rights even more by decreasing access to abortion care. Texas’ 84th Legislature, both passed HB 3994 as a law and had it Governor Abbott make it effective with his signature on July 8, or this year. This law complicates access to abortion services for mistreated and neglected minors and for those who do not possess specific identification cards in Texas.

In 1973, the US Supreme Court declared abortion a nationwide fundamental right through a trial called Roe vs. Wade and protected this right underneath the Fourteenth Amendment, more specifically, the right to privacy. A basic human right, especially one outlined by the Supreme Court, must never run at risk or threat chiefly because not everyone agrees with it. Under no circumstances should a pregnancy ever adjudge mandatory. Abortion is a Constitutional right and as a nation we must fight to give the right and freedom of safe abortions to women all around the nation, make birth control and sex education accessible to women, and raise awareness about the topic itself. The book, Undivided Rights: Women of Color Organize for Reproductive Justice, was published by the South End Press and written by Marlene Gerber Fried, Loretta Ross, and Elena Gutierrez. Ultimately, due to the lack of inclusivity and representation during the mainstream reproductive movement in the 20th century, this book highlights the bravery and activism done by women of color and their grassroots organizations in order to combat racism and stereotypes as well as to broaden and redefine the meaning of reproductive rights and reproductive justice, so as to ensure that all women, not just middle class white women, had their voices heard and addressed. With a thorough look at the various grassroots organizations as well as the various women of color behind them, I believe this book does an exceptional job at not only analyzing the historical contexts, but also analyzing the grassroots

Planned Parenthood is a “non-profit organization that provides sexual health care in the United States and globally” (Plannedparenthood.org). This includes supplying birth control and contraceptives, testing and treating STDs, and giving abortions. Planned Parenthood has received funding since Nixon in the 1970s when he amended the Public Health Service Act, but recently uproar around the idea of the government funding of Planned Parenthood started (Our History, Planned Parenthood.org).

Planned Parenthood wants Disney to create a princess who had had an abortion and is pro-choice, according to the Daily Wire.

Planned Parenthood was founded in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, her sister and her friend. It all started when they opened America’s first birth control clinic in Brooklyn, New York. Women didn’t have very many rights back then so it was hard to obtain information on birth control or contraception. the Comstock Laws were responsible for making contraception illegal. They decided to make a change and start Planned Parenthood. Sanger decided to open the clinic because she had seen the pain of her mother having 18 pregnancies, bore 11 children and died at the age of 40. She wanted to help the other women who were having unwanted pregnancies to have a form of prevention. Sanger keeps on fighting though and founds The Birth

Planned Parenthood has provided high-quality, affordable, healthcare to 2.5 million women, men, and teens for over 100 years. It is essential to have available for the community. Planned Parenthood gives lower class families the same option to healthcare as upper class families have. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization health clinic that many have grown to trust. Shutting down Planned Parenthood services would cause a national disaster.

Women having been fighting for equal rights for many years. Because of our genitalia, we will be paid less, we will be judged more, and we will have to fight to protect our basic human rights. Most women are born with the amazing ability to carry life; this is a blessing and a curse. Because of this ability, some people believe that a woman’s body is not completely her own, but that the government has rights to that body as well. We have been fighting to control our own bodies for many years. All women must understand that fighting for our reproductive rights is not just a simple pro-life or pro-choice battle, but a complex fight to teach proper sex education, maintain women’s health facilities, and protect our essential human rights.

Yes, I do believe as Americans, we should organize for reproductive justice rather than just settling on abortion rights, birth control and reproductive rights. The reason I believe we should just settle for reproductive justice because, it’s helpful for women who have suffered greatly. It is dangerous for us if we don’t let women think for themselves. For example, women who don’t receive a good quality of education will never be able to have a bright future for themselves and their children.

Every year, as many as a million lives are aborted; lives that could potentially have been your neighbor, your friend, or even your son or daughter. Pro-life is one side of the highly debated topic of abortion. However, by pro-life being viewed as the “God” side of the argument, abortion has more of a moral and ethical base to the discussion (ProCon). By understanding the views behind pro-life which aid in understanding the views and standpoints such as the role the government plays in how abortion functions in American, the role religious views and values play in how abortion is viewed from a religious standpoint, as well as how abortion is viewed from a medical standpoint, and finally a ethical and social view on the issue.

We all live our lives as we please all in accordance to the law, but when it comes to abortion people start to judge and try to regulate how others live and interfere in their personal choices. We live in a country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom to the choice of an abortion. A woman’s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme Court. The courts also have a category of classes called the ‘near-suspect’ classes, which include gender. Gender deserves protection from possible discrimination at the hands of the majority. Women constitute a majority of American’s and have been discriminated in the past. The Landmark case Roe v. Wade was decided and remains the law of the land. Making laws against abortions don’t stop abortions from happening; they just make it less safe, which in many cases leads to death. Therefore idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice. No child should be brought into this world where they are not wanted or are not able to live a normal life. Most people who are against abortion will never even become pregnant, so they should not be making laws against it. Pregnancy is a private and personal matter. Outlawing abortion is discriminatory and unfortunately abortions are being transformed from a right to a privilege for most women.

Women’s reproductive rights are a global issue in today’s world. Women have to fight to have the right to regulate their own bodies and reproductive choices, although in some countries their voices are ignored. Abortion, sterilization, contraceptives, and family planning services all encompass this global issue of women’s reproductive rights.
