Drinking Soda Research Essay

For those of you who think switching from the "real thing" to diet soda will help in losing weight; you are in for a rude awakening. More and more research is showing that not only will it not help but there is evidence that artificially sweetened diet beverages could actually cause you to gain weight.

Sugary beverages suggest a poor dietary quality; they are loaded with added sugars and attribute to the body’s energy density. “A 20-year study on 120,000 men and women found that people who increased their sugary drink consumption by one 12-ounce serving per day gained more weight over time—about 4 pounds per year” (19). Through increasing the daily intake in trivial increments, the body substantially results in an increased BMI (body mass index) and an increased body fat percentage score. Another study conducted at Harvard found that a 60 percent increase occurs in children for each 12-ounce they additionally drink daily. (________) The growing correlation between obesity and sugar has led to further studies, and statistical data. The serving size for a soda is usually about 8-ounce, the allowed amount in New York is 16-ounce which is double the recommended amount, but nevertheless a 16-ounce soda is a healthier choice than the banned sizes. It is a controversial topic due to people not liking being told what they can and cannot do and them not liking having a limited number of options. Even though the soda ban has a few downsides, there are exponentially more benefits to having it. The soda ban is a great idea due to it making a healthier society, it helps us make healthier decision, and it is more of an inconvenience as in you can still get it but it takes more effort.

Have you ever had a sip of soda and thought it could be dangerous? Probably not. You are probably thinking how nice and sweet it tastes. You are actually sending a whole lot of sugar to your liver. I created this scene to show that soda can be dangerous and putting labels on the drink can save hundreds of lives. If you put warning labels on soda and it says it can cause headaches, tiredness, diabetes, and even a heart attack people will consume less soda. People should have a right to know what the drink can do to your body. My three reasons are it could save lives, sugar is already a big part of our society, and warning labels decreased smoking.

The impact sugary sodas have on our bodies is known by everybody. But this didn’t stop people consume large quantities of sugary beverages. In accordance with the report, the average American has cut down on soda consumption by 25 percent in the last 25 years.

The government has taken initiative to cut down the amount of soda that Americans are allowed do consume. They say that America will be less fat if we don't drink it. If America and want to loose weight the have to be wiling to want to work at loosing the weight.

The person wrote this because they are pointing out how serious this was to Americans and how they should have instead paid attention to important matters that were actually happening. Obesity has become a real problem in countries around the globe, in America especially. Corpulence, when seen so widespread, is an epidemic and it is one that needs to be rigorously helped. Soda is a large part of Americans’ lives which is unfortunate knowing what it can do to you. These laws to be passed in New York that bar the use of food stamps for excessively sugary beverages are hopefully a step in that direction. However, soda is not the only cause for people’s rotundness. When a person is deciding what to eat and drink, they must always look at how it will affect them, regardless of how good it tastes. Every food is filled with things that are good and bad. Soft drinks are the most consumed beverage in the world today. Unfortunately, soft drinks are extremely toxic. Whether soft drinks satisfy thirst and taste good, this should not be a good enough reason to drink it. We should all do our bodies a favor and stop drinking soda.

Whether we are male, female, white, black, republican or democrat, the government will weave its way into the life of the citizen. Today, the government is beginning to grow exponentially, and are now able to control our basic rights and freedoms, it can even regulate what we eat. These rights go from what size of soda we drink to whether we can eat fatty foods. The government should remain out of what citizens can eat because it limits our choices and freedoms and will put many businesses out of business.

Sugar in soda can advance to permanent long-term damage to the brain. Additionally, the sugar in a person’s body can increase blood pressure and dilate pupils. While, this evidence had been scientifically proven precisely there are still people who don’t see the ethics in the soda ban. That’s why a state judge ruled against it. According to BusinessInsider.com in 2010, “A New York state judge struck down Mayor Bloomberg's controversial ban on large sodas on Monday, arguing that the restrictions on sugary sweetened drinks did not make sense, partly because the ban wasn't evenly enforced.” (Spector, “New Yorkers Will Be Significantly Fatter Because Of The Soda Ban Repeal”). Although the judge thinks the ban is inefficient he is inaccurate, the restrictions on the ban are based on scientific evidence. Focus/Thesis: Over the years soda has become a staple in our lives, and is unfortunately extremely toxic to our bodies. Which is why we need to make the effort to limit the amount we drink and make ourselves aware of the risks we expose to our health when choosing to drink soda.
