Through the transformation from an industrial landscape to an urban landscape dominated by commercial buildings/service-based businesses, the Distillery District contributes its own meaning to this sense of “place”. The ‘post-industrial’ landscape of the Distillery District is evident through the service-industry dominated land usages, such as restaurants and performing art centres, as opposed to the largely manufacturing/industrial-based usage of the past that dominated the area. Through this, one can see that the Distillery District experienced a substantial growth in its service sector as the influence of industrialization disappeared with the redevelopment project’s introduction. Additionally, the cultural, artistic background of the Distillery District is one of the direct causes for the unique service-based businesses situated within the district, like the performing arts centre.
