The deepest depths of the ocean are unfathomable, no one knows what creatures lurk down there.

Long ago under the sea, there lived a royal mermaid family in a beautiful kingdom. Queen Ryell bore six flawless daughters to King Adron, however, one was not ordinary. She was the youngest mermaid and never fit in with the rest of the girls. She possessed long blonde curly hair with bright blue eyes. She was unique in her own way and talked to everyone she caught sight of. Although she was curious of what was outside of the Kingdom gates, she obeyed her parents and never departed. Her name was Luna.

Most people today have visited or at least heard of the popular tourist attraction, Seaworld. These tourists may think of it as a place to see marine animals do trick, like killer whales interacting with humans in a fun and entertaining way- but do we ever stop to think about the treatment or feelings of these creatures? After visiting Seaworld and seeing the famous Shamu, the thought of how living in captivity affects the animal had not crossed my mind. After researching I am now extremely concerned with the way these whales are impacted by spending their lives in bathtubs and forced to do tricks for food, all while humans are blindly funding this billion dollar business.

Richard Van Camp shares the story of Torchy and his series of events that takes the reader along to see and feel the tragedies of Torchy with his past and current experiences. In the short story “Mermaid” by Richard Van Camp, the author explores the realm of a true tragedy in this story through the use of the Aristotle style of the elements of tragedy displayed by the means of Torchy’s series of unfortunate events through willing blindness, dramatized actions and pity developed for the character throughout the novel. With a closer look one can identify Peripeteia among many elements of tragedy found within this novel.

When your life revolves around the sea as ours does, you hear stories. Stories of deep sea monsters, mermaids, giant squids right out of a Moby Dick novel, are just some of the tales we’ve heard. Most stories about mysterious creatures we shrug off as ‘not bloody likely’, but others enter the realm of real possibility.

A tragic story in its own right, is a story that deals with tragic events, including an unhappy ending that usually involves the death or demise of the main protagonist. Although “Mermaids” is a truly sad and unforgiving story, it does not classify as a tragedy. Mermaids by Richard Van Camp has close to none of the aspects that make a tragic story, truly tragic. The characters development, ending, and tragic pattern, all support the fact that this story is sad, but not tragic.

A story that is believed by many people in different country around this globe but is not true or also known as a Myth is one of the known ideas where humans originated. People have always told stories about mythical creatures, such as dragons, unicorns, and mermaids. Before the days of airplanes and cameras, nobody could be sure what wild beasts might live in lands far away. Even now we are not exactly sure what lives at the bottom of the sea or on top of the highest mountains. One of the famous myths is about the mermaid, past few years some pictures of mermaid found in different provinces here in the Philippines. Some of the expert did not believe about the information that they receive, because the picture maybe edited by someone. So that’s why some theory about creation is not real.

Mythical beasts like big foot and mermaids have always been seen as fairy tales and possibilities. No one thinks that these legends exist. I mean, no actual beast means no hard or real evidence they exist. However, some of the ancient legends might be truer than we believe. Tragedy is defined as an event that causes suffering, destruction and death. When one is not fully aware of their knowledge, terrible events will correspond to what one has done. In the short story Mermaids by Richard Van Camp, the human suffering of Torchy resembles an Aristotle tragedy. Firstly, Torchy demonstrates hamartia when he is gambling. Additionally, the outcome of Torchy’s hamartia leads him to peripeteia which Torchy runs out of medicine. Lastly, Torchy wonders if he is a villain and this shows anagnorisis. Torchy’s actions ultimately lead his life to a downfall that is caused through accidental events, and this overall demonstrates the concept of an Aristotle tragedy.

In ancient times all the way to the present, mermaids have been interrogated of their existence. During our class schedule, we took the time to watch a documentary of the evidence that mermaids truly exist. From massive interviews to highly acclaimed scientists, the film tried to convince viewers that mermaids, are in fact real. However, for me as an individual, I believe that this documentary is clearly fake. To most people, watching this will completely capture their naïve selves to believe this motion picture, but not me.
