Research and Bibliography “Palm oil should we use it?” Issue- Palm oil is one of the world’s most popular edible vegetable oil. Used in most consumer goods, this particular oil may be cheap but it comes at a tremendous cost to our environment. Palm oil has been connected to many environmental, animal, and human rights violations yet organisations and companies all over the world continue to use this particular oil in just about everything, in fact this popular oil is in about half of all products on store shelves. Including products like laundry detergent, snacks, lipstick, cosmetics, ice-cream and even soap. Scientific explanation- Palm oil is extracted from the fruit of the oil palm tree, Elaeis guineensis, which thrives in fairly humid tropical climates. The large majority of palm oil production occurs in just two countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, but now is spreading all over the tropics, including Africa. To produce these plantations deforestation has to occur and this process results in a loss of biodiversity and a loss of habitat. The Human act of deforestation affects the water systems too, as rainforests produce 30% of the planet’s fresh water. When forestry is demolished water isn’t expelled into the atmosphere and the stability is lost. This leads to a drier climate and soil because there are no trees to transpire to the ground. why we shouldn’t use It -Palm oil too is not sustainably sourced and until there is evidence that real change has been made, it
