During the last decade, St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) has gained popularity as an alternative treatment for depression and a natural remedy for reducing inflammation due to its especial chemical composition(1, 2). H. perforatum is a perennial herb of the Hypericaceae family native to parts of Europe and Asia (middle-east and other parts) and also has spread worldwide, including temperate regions of India, China, Africa, and some parts of the United States and is distinguished by its golden yellow calycles(1) . In addition, when flower buds are crushed, a reddish liquid would be exposed. This reddish liquid contains numerous compounds with biological activity such as phloroglucinols hyperforin, adhyperforin, the naphthodianthrones hypericin and pseudohypericin, the flavonoids hyperoside, quercetin, rutin, quercitrin and isoquercitrin, and the dimeric flavonoids amentoflavone(3). Oily Hypericum preparations have been used for centuries as a medicinal plant to treat burns, wounds, alcoholism, dermatitis, neuralgia and myalgia beside its antidepressant, antiviral, and antibacterial effects(4-7). Deep in the thick swamps and woods of Northern Gulf County, amidst the buzz and sting of mosquitoes, chirps of squirrels, and swirls of the Apalachicola, is a long-lost story. One hundred and eighty years ago the town of Iola sprang out of the cypress swamp of what is now north east Gulf County. That small community, was, and still is an enigma in the wilderness of territorial Florida and has all but faded from the memory of Gulf County and is nothing but a boat ramp now.

Saint-john's wort was introduced from europe. It has a height of 20-80cm with a tap root, stolons and short rhizomes. Making it an aggressive invader in native pastures. The flowers are yellow and pods which are many-seeded brown capsules. The leaves, stems and floral organs of the saint-john's wort have tiny visible glands, in these glands there is a phototoxin, hypericin (black glands), protohypericin (translucent glands). The more glands that the plant has the higher the toxicity will become. Saint-john's wort is limited in B.C, mainly located in southern vancouver island and southern interior. Although in the western U.S.A the saint-john's wort is wide spread also known as “Klamath Weed”. The toxin concentration of the weed are low when the plant is younger then when it's mature. This weed causes skin problems for livestock, although those that seem to not be effect is deer and goats. Not considered a problem for cattle because it's known as palatable. However cattle that have been
Because Ca2+ is the central point for all mentioned processes, we focused our interests on hyperforin which is Ca2+-modulator. Hyperforin is the natural and biologically active compound extracted from Hypericum Perforatum (St John Wort) (26). The St John Wort extract and hyperforin attenuated symptoms of mild to moderate depression in a few clinical trials. Both extract and hyperforin displayed antidepressant-like activity in preclinical studies (27, 28).
Herbal medicines are known to treat many illnesses. Aside from this, they are widely known for their effects on weight loss problems. Although most herbal medicines do not have therapeutic claims, some are considered to be very potent and effective that they are accepted by many health agencies worldwide.
John's wort grows prolifically throughout the United States, easily identified by its yellow flowers. Many countries consider it to be a weed as it is so invasive. Consumption of large doses by livestock can cause nervous system depression, abortion, and even photosensitization and death, however people all over the world have used it in medicine for thousands of years. Studies are being performed on its ability to treat depression and other medical problems, and, amazingly, some have shown it to be just as effective in treating depression as medical antidepressants. It has few side effects for humans, but can react with certain

In April 2001 and again this month (April 2002) The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the results of clinical trials conducted to test whether St. John's Wort works to treat Depression. (3, 4, 5) Both times the results did not favor the use of the herb. The most recent JAMA report concluded, "...hypericum should not be substituted for standard clinical care of proven efficacy, including antidepressant medications and specific psychotherapies, for the treatment of major depression of moderate severity." In a St. John’s Wart overview published by Berkley (2014), they reported that their “studies do not support the use of St. John’s wort for severe depression, depression of long duration, or bipolar disorder. There’s little or no good evidence that it relieves anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, seasonal affective or sleep disorders or premenstrual syndrome."These studies were conducted to see if this weed would act as a natural alternative to prescription medication. In other studies conducted by Berkley, they found that “St. John’s wort worked no better than a placebo in people with minor depression over a 12-week period, but had more adverse effects.” Unfortunately, many of their studies determined that if this supplement affected the

John’s Wort, thus activating brain neurotransmission and counteracting depression. Other scientists argue that hyperforin and hypericin concentrations in common supplement dosages are too low to penetrate the brain deeply enough to influence brain neurotransmission (Enna and Norton).
