That is exactly what happened on the day of Thursday November 26th 2014. The Bill Crothers Varsity Winds comprised of grade eleven and twelve students along with a few, talented grade tens went to listen to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra play. We travelled via a typical yellow school bus that took us to Roy Thomson Hall where we went right to the top level and took our seats. For this concert report I chose to go to a performance of student composers held at the Kimball Recital Hall. I chose this one because I wanted to see some of the talent that my peers have in the music realm, and also it was one of the only concerts I have been able to attend because I usually work at night. It was impressive to hear pieces composed by students. I cannot imagine creating something as complex as a musical composition, much less actually performing it, so this aspect of the concert was particularly awe-inspiring. The concert I attended was called the Faculty and Student Recital, which took place in the Cisco Auditorium on April 11, 2017. The music that was on the program was mostly what is called “classical” music, as well as a Chinese Folk Song, an electronic composition, and variations on an Indian Tala. In the classical pieces, the instruments that were used were the violin, the piano, the cello, and the oboe. In the electronic composition, the computer was used to make music. In the Chinese Folk Song, the piccolo was used to imitate the unique timbre of a Chinese flute. In the Indian tala, drums from Ghana were used to imitate the rhythm and sound of Indian drums. My passion for music made me very excited about going the Columbus state musical concert held in the River Center of Performing Arts In the Legacy Room. The theatre is located in a nice location giving the audience a full range of sound and sight. The sounds are incredible and I really loved how I could hear everything. On 29 January 2016. My friends and I went to a concert performed by Tiffany Austin. The concert was entitled Tiffany Austin’s Blues de Voyage hosted by Presidio Officer’s Club at San Francisco in partnership with the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music. As I attend the concert, I categorize myself as a casual listener to a well performed music. I didn’t have enough knowledge yet back then to analyze critically on the performance as it is my first time attending a house concert. It was an exciting experience and I enjoyed it a lot. The atmosphere was good as everybody in the room also enjoyed the singing and music played by the performers.

On the evening of Sunday, December 16, 2012, I had the pleasure of attending a concert I’d wanted to see for quite a while. I was delighted to attend Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, performed by the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Richmond Ballet. The performance took place at Carpenter Theatre in Richmond Virginia. As I entered I felt a bit out of place. I’d never attended a performance quite like this one and I was a bit nervous. I took my seat to the left of the orchestra pit. I was thrilled to see how close I was. I had arranged for a seat near the orchestra so I could observe them as they played.

On the evening of Tuesday, November 28 at 7:30, I attended the UNG Instrumental Honors Recital. To be quite frank, I was entirely unsure of what to expect as I had never attended an instrumental concert before. The entire evening had a semi-formal air about it, despite the casual t-shirts and jeans many people were wearing. Each musician would step on stage to a completely silent audience, settle on the provided chair if necessary, take a deep breath, and then finally let the music sweep them away as they played for the audience. The passion and emotion each musician had was clear from the intensity of their respective facial expressions, which changed depending on what piece they were playing.

The concert that I attended was on November 14th, 2017, on a Tuesday night. Those that were performing were the Chamber Ensemble of Kutztown University. The Concert began at 7:30 p.m., and concluded at 8:30 p.m. When the concert was just beginning I was unsure of what to expect, besides the obviousness of a piano portion to the whole event, because there was one sitting in the center of the stage.

The Performing Arts Center was bustling with attendees of all ages. There were young students holding notebooks and laughing and repeatedly changing seats. There were older concert goers wearing blazers and serious expressions. A man in a black suit and a bow tie was sitting in an aisle seat holding an oboe. The atmosphere was cheerful and lively.

He didn’t miss not one note or detail while explaining about the piece. You could tell that he really enjoyed what he was doing by his body movements and facial expressions. Stephen Beus played solo instrument type music because he was the only one on the stage that was performing. There were many different terms that could be used to describe his concert pieces like: Pitch which means the highness or lowness of a tone, in Stephens pieces of music there were a lot of pitches, for example: Chaconne in D minor the pitches in that piece were low. Another term I could use Tempo which means the pace at which the beat goes by, the piece Fur Alina, had a really slow pace all throughout The dynamics which means how loud or soft music is played like Fur Alina the dynamics were soft. Secular music means music for entertainment and other religious activities. This concert was for entertainment it didn’t really concern anything religious it was more for our entertainment. On March 15, I decided to attend faculty recital at the Walker Recital Hall (WRH) which stared pianist Dr. Nathan Hess. The WRH filled up pretty quickly and almost every single seat got taken. The audience represented people from different walks of life, starting from the very young and leading up to relatively old.

The concert was performed on the Southam Hall stage at the NAC; this is a large hall with extremely good acoustics. It is a nationally known stage, so the quality of the hall is very good. Generally, the audience was very receptive as it was composed of adults, who were all silent. The acoustics were very good as the hall spread the sound throughout the hall without making it echo. This had a positive effect on the performance, because it was possible for the orchestra to be clearly heard from any point in the entire hall. I was impressed by the large number of students that I saw that night because the show deserved to have been heard by many young people.
