I have come to the realization that in life, nothing is guaranteed except for failure. As the legendary poet Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail”. I believe that failure and how someone responds to failure and adversity is what builds your character as a human being. When I walked out of Marvin Ridge High School on the last day of classes my sophomore year, I recognized that I needed to make a change. I had just seen my transcript for the first time since the end of freshman year, and the numbers on those pieces of paper crushed me. However it was that exact feeling of desperation that was the impetus for my academic renaissance. From that moment forward, I vowed to hold …show more content…
I have become a well-rounded individual with a strong work ethic and a true longing for learning and for education, along with staying active in the community and also participating in athletics. I have earned a varsity letter for my achievements on the wrestling mat, where I wrestled in the 120 pound weight class. I am a student of the Weddington High School Marine Corps JROTC unit, where I participate in athletic team events, I have also held down two jobs while balancing my studies. I like to play the trumpet in my spare time, an art I learned in middle school band class. I also enjoy volunteering and helping out with members of the greater Charlotte area community. I have volunteered for organizations such as compassion to act, which gives shelter to human trafficking victims in the Charlotte area. I have been on 8 mission trips, local and abroad to assist struggling families through renovation efforts and also through evangelism. I have served on my church’s Youth Leadership Board, where my duties were to plan special events for the youth of Weddington United Methodist Church, and to counsel younger members of our youth group as well. I am extremely interested in politics and world affairs, and I could see myself running for some kind of political position in the
Failure is something I have to accept. I have failed a lot in the past, and I have allowed those failures to effect me in the present. As a young boy in grade school, I would always work hard to obtain good grades. After my first semester
Failure is something that all people encounter in their lives. In some situations failure can break a person or make a person, meaning a person can fail at something and just simply give up. Others will fail and that failure can give them the inspiration to try harder to one day achieve their goal. I'm the type of person to fail and work harder until I am content. As my championship baseball coach would say "What’s our motto? Never give up!"
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” Joshua 1:9. Adversity is what comes to mind when reading this verse. The Book of Joshua teaches us to accept the good things God provides for us; things like adversity, suffering, and perseverance. I chose this verse because God chose for me to go through something so horrifying at the age of seventeen. It is natural to ask God “why me” in a time of hardship that never think about the purpose he has for us. How can adversity and suffering be a good thing? Because learning to overcome something is what builds your character. It turns you into the person God created you to be; and you find ways
Overcoming adversity is hard, but these people survived the toughest obstacles that life could throw at you. Adversity is something everyone goes through, but these are extraordinary cases of what people went through. This crowd of people overcame adversity in three ways, only caring about what they thought, being creative, and facing their problems.
Having traveled down a declining slope in my sophomore year, I was suddenly motivated to prop myself back up. I was for the first time emancipated of my pride and began to actively search for means to amend my “defeat”. When I finally received final semester grades, I was proud of not simply the hard work I’ve put into achieving these grades, but more importantly, how I picked myself up and rose above the ebbs and flows of my academic career.
Quite often you hear that we do not grow without failure; that failure is what teaches us a new skill and how to then succeed. I was not familiar with the quote, “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant,” by Horace, however I think this quote is true. To me, this means that when someone has some kind of disadvantage, that person can use the challenge to his advantage through self-reflection, determination, and hope. Every person faces an obstacle, usually many and of various degrees of challenge, and although you cannot control the situation, you can control your reaction. Those of us that learn from adversity take our time to figure out how to approach the problem in a new manner. We recognize that one barrier is not a reason to abandon our course. We think outside the box for how to overcome the challenge. We learn from the first failure and we regroup for the next approach. Failure teaches you how to define yourself rather than how others define you. All four of the
In addition, the willingness to learn through failure can help to reach the desired destiny. Nearly everybody fears failing, because it has been associated with all sorts of negativity. Although an optimistic look on the other side of tripping or falling down in life can make someone to be successful in
Failure is a part of everyone's daily lives; however, depending on the person you are you
I am not new to the idea of failing, but I refuse to accept failure as a mistake I will be remembered by. Through recent experiences I have learned how to react to failure, ask for help, and move on with my life.
When adversity strikes, am I a carrot, egg, or coffee bean? That is a complex metaphorical question that requires thoughtful deliberation before being answered. A carrot, egg, and coffee bean all respond to the same adversity (boiling water) in different ways. A carrot enters boiling water strong and hard, but comes out weak and soft. When an egg enters boiling water it is fragile, but afterwards the inside becomes hard. The coffee bean that is subjected to boiling water actually changes the water and releases a pleasant fragrance and flavor. Responding to adversity the way a coffee bean does would probably be the best option, but I do not feel that I respond like a coffee bean during every adverse situation I face. In reality, I feel that I respond to varying situations in different ways, as a carrot, egg, and coffee bean.
Failure can strengthen a person by trying harder the next time they face an event or fear, or even just anything.
The mere thought of failing prevents an individual from achieving great things in life and this also makes an individual miss out on wonderful opportunities.
As I discussed earlier in my writtings, I think that failure cannot be avoided and we are presented with failures to gain an opportunity to learn. Failures will be an aspect at some point professionally and or personally so that we can grow and develop as
Traditionally, failure is seen as a negative concept and is defined as lacking success. I, on the other hand, try to put a positive spin on everything in life. I see failure as an obstacle that is experienced by all, but it does not define an individual. Failure in essence will force an individual to be more receptive to their surroundings and actions and also will force an individual to mature. Looking back on my childhood years I can now pinpoint the areas where I failed and I can confidently say that I have grown and prospered due to those failures. The three major failures I have experienced were my attention deficit issues which affected my ability to succeed in school, my anti-social habit that I let consume my early years, and my
Many people have experienced failure at least once in their lifetime. It has been said that failure can make you stronger. I believe that failure can lead to success because it's a learning experience that you will never forget.
