According to Burke, literature stylizes reality by trying to depict the message that it is trying to strategically. However, Burke ultimately argues that it is almost impossible for an author to depict the actual reality that he or she is trying to produce, without the message potentially being altered by a member or his or her audience. In “Same Love,” Macklemore tries to promote the idea that every individual should have the same rights, no mater his or her sexual orientation. He probably knew that he was going to have some backlash for advocating for something that he was not. Macklemore is a heterosexual white male, who grew up in an affluent area. Critics might argue why would he want to rap about gay rights, when it appears that he
“My love, she keeps me warm.” Without context, these song lyrics have no impact or power behind them. However, if told that these words were sung by a female vocalist, and preceded by the lyrics “I can’t change, even if it tried, even if I wanted to,” suddenly the words have meaning as a woman sings of her love for another woman (Haggerty, Lewis, Lambert, 2102). These lyrics come from the 2012 song “Same Love” by Macklemore with Ryan Lewis and featuring Mary Lambert. In the song “Same Love,” Macklemore raises his voice against the issues of discrimination, gay rights, and marriage equality that we see in today's era. He uses two fallacies in the song, but Macklemore’s use of the three rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos in his
Authors write to be understood and to show others their beliefs. They want to color a picture for you in the words they are writing. John Steinbeck used word choice, parallelism, and foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men in the same way a great artist creates a scene.
a fictional audience, and the reader is seen as an unnoticed third party. It is because of this
There are many perspectives and definitions on art, an abstract topic. In the world of books, nothing is considered art unless the novel can engage the readers through the author's use of emotions and stylistic syntax. Using Groen's essay “Books Still Win” tragic realism is seen in Joshua Ferris' novel “Then We Came to the End.” Tragic realism is evident in Ferris' novel through the fact there is both good and bad within a person, that life improves with struggles and that sadness is always evident.
However, while Macklemore supported the Black Lives Matter movement, he questioned whether "You speak about equality, but do you really mean it?/Are you marching for freedom, or when it 's convenient? (Woods, Jamila. White Privilege II. Macklemore. Ryan Lewis, 2016. Google Play Music. Web. 19 Nov. 2016.)" He wonders if he 's actually making an impact on improving the lives for blacks or if he 's just doing this to feel good about being white and a successful artist. One may be skeptical on why Macklemore supports the movement, but considering not all
"A work of literature must provide more than factual accuracy or vivid physical reality... it must tell us more than we already know." - E. M. Forster. I do not agree with this quote for the simple fact that about half of the great works of writing don't follow this pattern. There are two that stand out from the rest. Both are written by Edgar Allen Poe. The first one is "The Fall of the House of Usher" and the second is "The Raven."
In 2016, Macklemore released a new song called “White Privilege II”. He knew that by releasing this song he would be criticized by many people both white and black but felt that the issue on racism had to be spoken up about. Topics that the song discusses are white supremacy as well as black lives matter movement. Previous to “White Privilege II” Macklemore had released “White Privilege” in 2005 but since he was not a well-known artist then the message now is more powerful. Due to the fact that Macklemore is white, he did not know what to do about racial discrimination.
The song White Privilege II by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is a song told how people talk about racism instead of acting on it. The song talks directly about how nothing is done to help black people by saying “We want to dress like, walk like, talk like dance like, yet we just stand by. ”(Macklemore & Lewis) These lyrics talk about how people want to steal from black culture, yet people still do nothing to help improve their lives. Macklemore & Lewis try to inform people by using this song and their fame to spread the message of the black lives matter
Literature does not have to have the vivid physical reality, actually, not using it leaves the opportunity for the reader to picture everything themselves, and Edgar Allen Poe will prove me right with his poem, The Raven. Poes poem does not use the harsh details the prompt is stating we need.
The song, “Same Love”, is a five minute and eighteen second song that addresses issues such as sexual orientation discrimination, homophobia, civil rights, and inequality. The form of “Same Love” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis is three repetitions of the verse and chorus (A-B-A-B-AB). This song has a steady pulse with an alternation between high and low pitch stemming from the two vocalists in the song. The conjunct melody is composed of a single motif played on a loop throughout the song. There are instrumental changes in the melody as a way to alter the dynamics.
Philosophy to Murdoch is straightforward, and requires a degree of skill to write making it counter-natural, in effect successfully delivering the authors philosophical truth. Whereas Murdoch perceives literature to be the opposite; literature is naturally expressed by everyone, and used for entertainment through the uses of mystification and ambivalences (230). Any mode of truth in literature generally has to be sought out and interpreted, whereas philosophy focuses on a single conclusion with supporting arguments. Such ambiguity in literature results in being understood as a themes that are applicable to certain isms, or ethics of morality. Consequently, fiction to Murdoch devaluates the authors intended message (236). However, I argue that fiction itself broadens the way to deliver a message in an entertaining fashion, and has been accomplished in Plato’s modes of textual dialogue. Murdoch agrees that Plato’s philosophy is the exceptional form of philosophical art, and given her claim it demonstrates the possibility in intertwining literature, and
For example, if I read Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, and bring to my reading my personal understanding of fiction writing and my life experiences to date, I might decide that Plath has created a brilliant work of fiction that should be meticulously picked apart, diagrammed, dissected, and combed for meaning. But, if some other woman read The Bell Jar, bringing to her reading a limited knowledge of fiction writing, but a deeply personal understanding of depression, suicide, and mental illness, she might decide that Plath’s work is a misconstructed, misrepresentative, and even offensive piece of literature. What the author creates is a guide, an outline, and even an imagining; the reader may imagine or conceptualize the author’s text in an entirely different way. So, whether authors have definite intentions or not, it is unrealistic that their texts will produce only one interpretation.
Same Love addresses many flaws in our society, one of the main ones being that gay people are considered less worthy than straight people and that they are looked down on, as “gay is synonymous with the lesser,” which is the perfect example of equality. While Macklemore is addressing this flaw in our society, he is making sure listeners know that gay people aren’t less worthy than straight people. Sadly enough, It is understandable that gay people consider themselves to have less self worth than others, since in many countries their love isn’t even legal. Although in New Zealand gay marriage is legal, is it still a fight for equality in many other places across the globe, including Australia, a country we would consider very similar to ours. Although seemingly similar, gay marriage is still illegal in Australia, and there has been a recent yes/no poll for the public surrounding the legality of it, which highlights that overall we may not be as forward and as progressed in this issue as we think. It saddens me that gay marriage and equality is still an issue in our society, and that gay people still have a reason to be afraid. In America, where the song Same Love originated, Donald Trump has recently been voted into power. This is a scary time for homosexuals in America as well as others who do not fit his frame of thought, as Donald Trump isn’t
First of all, music has the capability of positively influencing the audience by providing a positive message incorporated into their music. One societal change that that the world is forced to look upon is the promotion of same sex marriage laws. In 2012, Macklemore released a song titled, “Same Love”. In this song, Macklemore depicts a man struggling to discover his identity, particularly in his childhood. Macklemore sings, “When I was in the 3rd grade I thought that I was gay 'cause I could draw… I told my mom, tears rushing down my face” (“Same Love”). In the beginning of the song, he was conflicted about his sexuality and was in a state of confusion. For the people that are in similar situations, will also experience these kind of struggles throughout their lifetime. Later in the song, he sings, “It's human rights for everybody. There is no difference. Live on! And be yourself!”(Macklemore, “Same Love”). This phrase is the essence of the meaning behind the song. It says that human rights are for
The use of realism offer s and insight into the unknown for most readers, but by creating characters such as the heroine, Anne Elliott who the reader can be most associated with, assists Austen in influencing the reader.
