Response To The Book Columbine

Decent Essays

A theme to the book Columbine is a spark that is not tended can cause a blaze. Eric and

Dylan showed signs of violence long before the Columbine tragedy. Petty crimes and

suspicious behavior should have clearly foreshadowed the events to come. If people who

were aware of the “red flags” had taken action to get the boys help, the end situation

could have been avoided. What started out as small fantasies, turned into one of the worst

killing sprees that America had ever seen because no one stepped in to prevent the

shooting long before it happened.

b.) Eric Harris is characterized in the book as a very attractive teenager. He seems well liked

by girls, has a job, and has friends like a normal teen. Mentally, Eric is psychopathic; …show more content…

Eric is also persuasive. Some

people, like Dylan Klebold, were entranced by Eric and followed his ideas and actions.

c.) For me, Columbine was a hard book to read. The author used more emotional details, as

opposed to straight facts, than I expected. He made the characters in the book very human

and relatable instead of writing to make them seem far removed from readers today. One

of the hardest parts for me to read was the section about the waiting parents. As the

author tells the story of parent after parent being reunited with their children, it hurt to

read about the families who were becoming more and more hopeless with every arriving

bus.

d.) I do not think the book glorifies Eric and Dylan at a point of acceptability, but it does

glorify their planning and intelligence. The author gives the straight facts about what

happened; however, by the way the author treats the information and the way he

describes it, I feel like he thinks their plans and preparations are brilliant. I do not believe

the book will encourage copycats but instead deter them. Things are different now than

they were then. The facts given in the book and lessons learned at the time have …show more content…

They had jobs and friends, liked girls, and had

hobbies. The only difference between the boys and normal teens was their mental state,

and that could not be seen from the outside.

f.) I believe Eric changed the most in the two years leading up to the shooting. He went from

fantasizing about violence to playing it out in real life. His thoughts became too strong

for his mind to hold and he could no longer be satisfied with hypothetical situations. His

“missions” are a prime example of his turn to real life violence. The vandalism and petty

crimes were also a signal of change in him.

g.) Eric and Dylan are responsible for the killings. Their friends who helped them acquire the

materials for the attack all claim to be ignorant to knowledge of the boys’ plans, so, if

they are telling the truth, I don’t think they are responsible for what happened. Those

friends probably feel that they have something to do with what happened because they

inadvertently assisted the boys. I don’t think they have any reason to be guilty. They

knew Eric and Dylan enjoyed guns and explosives and probably never thought
