Picture this: A man, among others, is sitting on a train as he watches his family who are all waving him goodbye. He notices that each one of his family members are also lost in their own thoughts. His mother, clutching onto her husband as she cries and says silent prayers in her head; the prayer being that God will protect her son and that he shall come home, safe and sound. His father, holding onto his mother as he tries to not cry himself. However, the father lets his eyes shine with pride that his son is fighting for the betterment of our nation. His siblings, standing on the left or right of their parents, wondering if their brother really needs to serve their country. The main thought in their head is this statement: “They are plenty of other guys who can fight, and my brother isn’t one. We need him more”. His wife, looking towards the train that has her sweetheart on board. With the lingering thought of the goodbye kiss that she just shared with her brave man. Lastly, but not least, his children. Perhaps one of the most define statement about service and patriotism was “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” This was the statement made by President John F. Kennedy during his inaugural address in 1961. John F. Kennedy, like many others in public office, was a military veteran. He served in the Navy and was recognized for his actions; a citation for an award he received included the words “His outstanding courage, endurance and leadership contributed to the saving of several lives...”. He understood his own life was but a microcausism of the greater good called America. Today, many citizens fail to recognize or understand what Kennedy felt, or to understand what it means and even what it

Overall as an American citizen, I understand why the government did most of the things that were done. There main goal is to make our country work smoothly and anything that gets in the way has to be dealt with. The feeling of dissent is rightful for many people, but if they get down to the bare bones and fully understand the issue and solutions, there may be a better understanding of the government’s efforts. The feelings that Americans had during these times of hardship are comprehensible. Limitations were placed, people were hurt, and many rules were enforced. At times of war pressure, things may be looked over, and mistakes will be made. The mistakes that were made in the past should be thought of as what shaped America to what it is today.
