The film “The Freedom Writers” was released in 2007 and was directed by Richard LaGravanese. Richard used multiple film techniques to help the viewers understand how the characters are feeling, their relationships with other characters and what their personality is like. These techniques include camera shots, costume, and lighting, and they were helpful to create a theme of perseverance. In one scene, room 203 is spending a lot of time to raise money so Miep Gies, an elderly lady who lived through World War II and helped hide Anne Frank, can come visit them. After a dance concert and a bake sale, both of which were very popular, they had raised enough for Gies to travel to America. During their struggle to fundraise, Margaret the head teacher would continuously complain to the principle that they shouldn’t be able to do so, to no avail. When Miep arrives, students have created a big, bright sign, welcoming her to their school, and they all listen with rapt attention as she tells them her experience in the war. A tracking shot was used as Margaret marched to the principal's office three times and the camera followed her as she moved. A tracking shot attracts the audience's attention to what the camera is focusing on, which in this case is Margaret. A long shot being incorporated into the tracking shot tells the audience that the setting is important as well, and the long shot helps the viewer understand the emotion of the characters as we
