I think it’s fair to assume that over the course of their career, a writer toggles through a number of different genres until they find their niche. In my opinion, I feel that the only way to differentiate what form of writing works over the other is to write different drafts of each genre. Oddly enough, through my past academic experiences I have written more work based on rhetorical analysis than literacy narrative. In fact, in high school most of my English courses were heavily based on rhetorical analyses. After my elementary school days, I found myself sparsely writing any literacy narratives. Democracy has always been threatened by illiteracy. There are a few ways in which democracy has been threatened by illiteracy. These ways are, people forging a vote, not understanding instructions on medication, and traveling out to the streets. These three things are a huge problem for illiterates. In order to prevent illiteracy one must open themselves to the world and learn about democracy. As James Madison stated, “A people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power knowledge gives” (Kozol 114).
Advertisements are everywhere. From billboards, to magazines, to newspapers, flyers and TV commercials, chances are that you won’t go a day without observing some sort of ad. In most cases, companies use these ads as persuasive tools, deploying rhetorical appeals—logos, pathos, and ethos—to move their audiences to think or act in a certain way. The following essay rhetorically analyzes an article that is written about why the legal drinking age should stay at 21 years old in the United States. The author of the article attempts to argue against the popular opinion that the drinking age should be lowered and is successful by using appeals to one’s logos. The author is an experienced writer and knows how to convey their ideas to convince people of his argument. In May of 1998, Kipland Kinkel brought a gun to his school. Over the course of two days this escalated from: being sent home, to murdering his father and mother, to murdering 2 students and wounding 26, earning a lifetime sentence of 111 years and 8 months in prison. In the court case being examined, the presiding judge addresses the original case, defendants ground for appeal, and the justification for the State’s decision to deny the appeal. Judge Haselton effectively uses ethos, logos, and pathos to support the Higher Court’s decision to deny the appeal because the original sentence was constitutional and just.
Do traffic signals make a difference when drivers are conducting their vehicles? In U.K. the roads have less signs and are smaller roads than in the United States. The United States has great amounts of traffic signals and symbols all over the road to make the driver more aware. In the U.K. accidents do occur but not that often has in the United States. In the Unites States every second there is huge amounts of accidents going on over the nation. John Staddon in his magazine article “Distracting Miss Daisy” tries to persuade that traffic control is making traffic more dangerous because we do not pay attention to the road, but to the signals.

From two perspectives, we see a world plagued by the ignoble aspects of human nature. Through one set of eyes we are shown the global ecosystem imitating the opening motions of a mass extinction, through another we see the inevitable and hellish effects of culturalized greed. In both cases we are treated to the observations of an aggrieved observer, but the means by which these observers show us their perspective on the world are by no means identical. Here we will explore the strategies, expressions, argumentations, and appeals of two authors with intertwining stories to tell.
A rhetorical analysis assignment is to see how an author tries to present his work to a certain group of people. There is present certain meaning in all the texts and it is up to the author to communicate it in the required way. He is alum of the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Times. The article was written on February 05 2013.
For my third writing project, I have decided to create a research proposal, directed at the USC Rossier School of Education in order to get them to accept my dissertation examining the gentrifying effects of neighborhood preference in charter school lottery systems. This proposal is effective because it employs rhetorical strategies appropriate for the target audience – in this case, a committee of professors that are knowledgeable about the subject of the proposed dissertation. These rhetorical strategies include the structure of the document, stylistic choices such as academic diction and tone, and the choices regarding the content of the proposal.
In my English 1010 class, I have learned to do a number of things through writing essays. I have written a Literacy Narrative, a Discourse Community Analysis, and a Writing Research essay. Firstly, I have learned to identify how an author’s purpose, audience, genre, and context determine effective writing. The purpose of the literacy narrative was to help me understand myself better as a writer (Jones 1). My teacher was the intended audience of the narrative. The genre of the narrative was non-fiction by cause of it being about my experience as a writer. The context of writing made my writing more interesting and more effective. Knowing those elements helps you to compose writing that is more effective due to you needing to know what you need to write about and who is receiving your writing. I displayed these skills by going into detail about my experiences with reading and writing through my life. As shown in the following sentence from my literacy narrative I shared how fun and exciting it was when my second-grade class received the opportunity to write a book, A Book of Future Astronauts, “Everyone in the class was truly excited to be writing our own book,” (Writing is Good).
In Chamberlain’s speech, “Why we Fight,” the appeal of pathos is most effective because it creates a sense of inspiration for the audience to keep fighting for those cannot defend themselves. Chamberlain delivered “Why we Fight” in the year 1836 to 120 war weary mutineers longing to return home; however, they were desperately needed to fight in Gettysburg. Chamberlain addressed his speech to motivate the men to continue fighting for justice. Chamberlain uses pathos by addressing the crowd to argue that “[they] are an army to set other men free,” (Chamberlain 11). Living in a country where most information is received from writings, those who suffer from illiteracy have a major disadvantage.
