The book The Night Stalker is based on the life and crimes that Richard Ramirez has committed. Ramirez died at the age of 53 from an illness that had to do with lymphoma, while he was on death row. He was a serial killer who tortured, raped, and murdered several people in just over two years. Richard had more than 28 victims, but only 13 of them he has been convicted of actually murdering. His victims ranged from 9 to 83 years old, most of them were female, the only time he killed males was when they were in his way. The reason his main targets were either really young or elderly was because they are the weakest ones, and aren’t capable to fight back. Richard started to gain popularity because he had admitted to being a Satanist, which then
For the slightly older children he would convince them that he worked at a construction company. Olsen said he would promise them jobs that paid almost triple times minimum wage. For the younger children and the teenagers, he would often meet and lure them at local hangouts and at a church that he and his wife practiced at. (CBC News, 2011) Clifford also told authorities he would give the victims copious amounts of drugs and alcohol to render them unconscious and then would rape, torture, assault and eventually kill them. (Hager & Fletcher, 2011) Taking pride in his killings, Olsen almost always referred to himself as the “Beast of British Columbia”. (CBC News, 2011). For countless years after the murders were committed, the details of each killing remained unknown. In 2012, Peter Worthington, a well-known journalist, published his book “Predator: The life and Crimes of Serial Killer Clifford Olsen”. In the book, over 50 pages of complete manuscripts, Olsen himself describing each murderer, were released. One by one he went into great detail of how he raped and killed all 11 victims. Peter told the media that the manuscripts were given to him by Olsen’s lawyer, Bob Shantz. Peter was instructed to publish and release the book only after Olsen’s son turned 21. This was a request directly from Clifford himself saying that his son “would better understand his father” if he was 21 and heard all about the killings. (McCormack,
Los Angeles, California went through a time period where serial killings happened and the suspect was on the run for over two decades. Most of the victims were prostitutes in South Los Angeles. The serial killer began his killings in 1987, apparently stopped for 13 years then resumed with his killings. The killer left little to no evidence, besides his DNA from sexually assaulting his female victims. For decades LAPD failed to find the killer or anyone who was related to him (Dolan & Landsberg, 2010).
A serial killer is a person who kills multiple people in a certain manner, this might include raping, shooting, stabbing, choking, etc. Richard Trenton Chase, most known as “The Vampire of Sacramento” was an American, male serial killer who was responsible for the death of six people within a month in Sacramento, California. He was given the nickname of “vampire”; he was known for drinking his victims blood and even eat the remains. He was also guilty for going around neighborhoods and trying to open unlocked doors, claiming unlocked doors represented an invitation for the murderer to go in. It was also stated that he had a disturbing childhood which led him to become a sadistic and mental killer, also the cause for developing hypochondria
Richard Ramirez nick-named the night stalker, was an American serial killer who broke into homes all across California raping, torturing, and murdering victims. Ramirez's first known murder took place on June 28, 1984 when he attacked 79 year old Jennie Vincow, who was viciously sexually assaulted, stabbed and murdered during a burglary in her home. Ramirez's second known killing occurred almost nine months after his first attack. On March 17, 1985, he attacked Maria Hernandez, who escaped him, and then instead killed her roommate, Dayle Okazaki. He also shot and killed Tsai Lian Yu the same evening. This spree started a media frenzy that dubbed Ramirez the valley intruder. Ten days later, on March 27, Ramirez murdered 64 year old Vincent Zazzara and Zazzara's wife, Maxine. Ramirez used an attack style that would become a pattern for the him. Vincent was shot first, then Maxine was brutally assaulted and stabbed to death. Ramirez also gouged out Maxine Zazzara's eyes.
The Night Stalker murdered over sixteen people, On March 17, 1985 he attacked twenty two year old Maria Hernandez right outside her home. He shot her right before entering her front door, as he entered there was thirty four year old Dayle Okazzi, Ramirez immediately shot and killed him. Within an hour of killing Okazzi Ramirez struck again in Monterey Park, he jumped thirty year old Tsai-Lian Yu. He pulled her out of her vehicle and threw her into the road, he then shot her several
Richard Ramirez This American cereal killer also went by the name the night stalker. Ramirez was born in El Paso, Texas on February 29, 1960. His parents were Mercedes and Julian Ramirez and he was the youngest of seven kids. As a teenager he spent a lot of time with his cousin who had recently came back from the Vietnam war. Together they smoked pot and discussed satanic worshiping and Mike told Richard of the Vietnamese he tortured while over seas. The influence from his cousin along with teenage rebellion had led to Richards drug addiction and that led to petty crimes to support his habits. I believe the breaking point for Ramirez was when he witnessed his cousin Mike murder his wife. Hearing all the torturous story's and seeing his cousin
Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera, also known as El Chapo, was born in the rural community of La Tuna, Badiraguato, Sinaloa (Beith, 2010). Guzman Loera started his trafficking career in the 1980’s working for the powerful Miguel Angel Felix-Gallardo (U.S Department of State, 2015); he was able to quickly move up the ranks because of his expertise in air logistics (U.S DOS, 2015). Guzman Loera is now the most powerful drug trafficker in the world and the leader of the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico. Thousands of killings have been attributed to Guzman Loera’s organization, along with kidnappings, and extortions. Mexican authorities arrested Guzman Loera on June 9th, 1993, for murder and drug related charges and was given a twenty year sentence in a maximum security prison in Jalisco, Mexico. However, he managed to escape from the maximum security prison on January 19, 2001 (U.S DOS, 2015). His escape from the maximum security prison in Jalisco has allowed him to
As the literature on serial murder increases and becomes more common, it creates an essentialist stereotype, which forms specific notions about a serial killers ‘character’. These certain notions include that the serial killer is a male, the people he goes after are defenseless, his motives for killing are internal and he gets a psychological reward from doing it. Out of all the stereotypes, the most prominent is sexual fantasy. Sexual fantasy in killers was first discovered by Reinhardt in 1957 and since then serial killers have been classified as ‘sexual sadistic killers’. This name has become an emblem for them and has shaped the way they are defined and researched. Killers that blame their actions on this will repeat their fantasies until they are played out perfectly.
Murder, willingly taking another human's life, is considered a heinous crime in the United States, and from the sociological perspective, breaks an important more. Serial Murder, therefore, is a sociologically deviant phenomenon where a person kills two or more people in distinct events, and an FBI overview of serial killers states “No single cause, trait, or even a group of traits can differentiate or identify serial killers … from other types of violent offenders” (FBI). We can, however, use sociological perspectives to identify potential factors in these cases. As a boy, Jeffrey Dahmer was described as being a loner and a poor student- and had been sexually abused by a neighbor. He is homosexual, and all of his victims were males- which
Consequently, he became a loner at school and spent most of his time with his cousin Michael who was a Vietnam veteran. However, his cousin was a psychopath, and shared horrendous stories with Richard. Michael shared how he raped, and killed woman for entertainment while at war. His cousin would show him pictures of severed heads of the women he killed when Richard was only twelve years old. The two spent time smoking marijuana and according to Ramirez, his cousin taught him how to cut people, and to shoot a gun. He also introduced him to satanic worshiping with the idea in mind that it was.
Richard Ramirez is an infamous serial murderer who terrorized Los Angeles, California in 1985. The media gave him the name the “Night Stalker” when he was on his vicious rampage of forcing himself into the homes of his victims late at night and committing his heinous crimes. Though he was only convicted of thirteen murders, he had many more victims. His crimes were so random, disorganized, and impulsive that the law enforcement officials of Los Angeles had no luck finding Ramirez for months as he grew increasingly more violent. (Tripod.com, 2012) Finally, in August of 1985, the police had enough information from many of his victims to release a sketch of him to the media. The sketch had only been on the news for one
The stereotype that exists for individuals who commit serial murder is one that mainly includes males of a specific race. However, it is now known that white males are not the only individuals who commit serial murder. Men and women from all racial and ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic statuses have been found to be serial murderers. Although this information has been presented to society, the cultural schema of the white male serial killer is still prevalent. The assumptions that involve serial murderers often include two aspects, the serial murderer is male and the serial murder is a type of “lust murder”, often involving sexual crimes by a sadist (Keeney and Heide, 1995). Keeney and Heide (1994) define serial murder to be the
Other authors talk more about the aspect of serial killers having a type of disease that makes it impossible for them not to commit these crimes. Cartel (1985) says that in addition to the lack or non-apparent compassion or guilt that the killers contain, they state that they experience a euphoric state during or after these murders. It is like an addiction that they cannot overcome, feeling the need to kill repeatedly to achieve this “high”. Lunde (1980) states that sexual sadism, “ a deviation characterized by torture and/or killing and mutilation of other persons in order to achieve sexual gratification”. Lunde says this in reference to the fact that many serial killers rape their victims before, during, and even after the murder has taken place. He also references that fact that in an extensive number of serial murders, the cause of death was strangulation. This is very relevant because in strangulation deals with total control over the victim. Ramirez’s method of death was sometimes strangulation, though he did choose to shoot many of his victims.
Serial murder is one of the most baffling crimes that occur in the U.S. and all over the world. Knight (2006) defines serial murder as the killing of three or more people over a period of more than 30 days, with a significant cooling-off period. The cooling off period may be weeks, months or even years long. Researchers have proposed various psychological, biological and sociological theories that offer a partial understanding of the nature of serial murder. Some propose that the basis for criminal behavior is a predisposition to violence as well as a mix between environment, personality traits and biological factors. Serial killers are predominantly male. Only 3 percent of serial murders are committed by women (U.S. News and World Report,
Jeffrey Dahmer was a sex offender and serial killer mainly between the years 1978 and 1991. He is well known for his severely atypical behaviors. Among his outward manners that are recognized as abnormal are paraphilia-specifically necrophilia and sexual sadism. Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims, whom were boys and men, suffered from rape, violence, dismemberment and finally their murders. Dahmer’s slow progression of killings soon turned into an obsession, which would later land him in prison with a sentence
