August 2013, My uncle Juther Alfredo Perez was brutally murdered. He was 28 years old. He had two kids, a girlfriend and always cared for his family and friends. He was 6’8 with a lot of mouth. The subject of the book “The Midnight Assassin” by Skip Hollandsworth is focused on uncovering the truth behind who is truly at fault for the murders of Mollie Smith and, several other victims. The murders occurred in Austin, Texas during the 19th century. Based on the first three chapters, three prominent characters have been introduced. All three characters are currently prime suspects. At the time, Austin was a prestigious town, equipped with the finest law enforcement made first hand by god himself, the Texas Rangers. When the young yellow skinned slave Mollie Smith was murdered, terror truly struck Austin. News reporters from all over Texas came to cover the story, thus creating conspiracies about each suspect. Evaluation of each suspect and their motives to perpetrate such a gruesome murder-Walter Spencer, a hardworking slave, who had never done any harm; Tom Chalmers, the brother of the land owner where the murder took place; Lastly, Dr. Ralph Steiner, the esteemed doctor.

Through the narrative “The Scholarship Boy” I find few turning points that I notice a shift in the demeanor of Richard Rodriguez as well as how I perceive the story. First of all, it is made apparent to me that people acknowledge him for his successes by making remarks such as, “Your parents must be proud” or “How did you manage it? According to the opening paragraphs Rodriguez is seen as a model student. Although this may be true, the first turning point I find suggests otherwise as Rodriguez conveys, “For although I was a very good student, I was also a very bad student…Always successful, always unconfident. Exhilarated by my process. Sad.” This quote changed my perspective of Rodriguez because of the negative emotion he expresses toward his family. By the same token, I recall my sister being an outstanding achiever throughout school, yet, she was similarly depressed as well as annoyed towards me and the rest of our family. This flashback assisted me in relating to Rodriguez’s emotions towards his successes. In the same fashion, I am supplied a grasp of his shift in tone and direction in the narrative.

In the late sixties and early seventies, California was haunted by dozens of unsolved murders. The offender remains unknown to this day. The murderer, who referred to himself as "the Zodiac," made contact with the police and area newspapers throughout his reign of terror through a series of menacing notes. Although the police were never able to apprehend Zodiac, they were able to gather information about him via the letters. Zodiac boasted of killing up to forty victims, however, police estimated he may have killed over 50.

Richard Trenton Chase is a serial killer who is described as a disorganized visionary killer. He murdered six people in under a month before he was apprehended. Chase grew up in a very dysfunctional family, had borderline low average intelligence, and consistently received bad grades while in school. He suffered from erectile dysfunction at an early age. He spent much of his life in and out of mental institutions. During his short-lived murder spree he was delusional, he believed that the aliens and Nazi 's made him commit kill his victims. According to Storey, Strieter, Tarr and Thornton, "he drank the blood of his victims and ate their internal organs. He did this as part of a delusion that he needed to prevent Nazis from turning his blood into powder via poison they had planted beneath his soap dish" (para. 1).

Eventually Richard Rodriguez develops bitterness towards his parents. For being uneducated and ignorant, His thirst for knowledge has transformed him into someone who holds a distain for those without knowledge or esteem. Then he transforms into someone who feels guilt over his success. His family life has turned into an atypical situation where there is very little closeness between him and the other members of his family. This is caused by his increasing want to distance himself from what he believes to be uneducated.

Richard Ramirez’s chances at a normal life were greatly reduced by biology, but his environment certainly did not lead him toward a good future. Julian was a very abusive father and Richard witnessed him beating his older brother on several occasions. In spite of the violence and negativity that he faced every, people in his life thought of him as “a good boy” until he was about ten years old. (Bruno, 2012) Around that time, Richard’s Cousin Michael, a former Green Beret for the United States military, returned to El Paso from Vietnam. Richard and Mike spent most of their time together doing drugs and discussing the violence that Mike experienced during his deployment. A serial killer is a person who kills multiple people in a certain manner, this might include raping, shooting, stabbing, choking, etc. Richard Trenton Chase, most known as “The Vampire of Sacramento” was an American, male serial killer who was responsible for the death of six people within a month in Sacramento, California. He was given the nickname of “vampire”; he was known for drinking his victims blood and even eat the remains. He was also guilty for going around neighborhoods and trying to open unlocked doors, claiming unlocked doors represented an invitation for the murderer to go in. It was also stated that he had a disturbing childhood which led him to become a sadistic and mental killer, also the cause for developing hypochondria

Los Angeles, California went through a time period where serial killings happened and the suspect was on the run for over two decades. Most of the victims were prostitutes in South Los Angeles. The serial killer began his killings in 1987, apparently stopped for 13 years then resumed with his killings. The killer left little to no evidence, besides his DNA from sexually assaulting his female victims. For decades LAPD failed to find the killer or anyone who was related to him (Dolan & Landsberg, 2010).

If someone ever met Andrew Urdiales he would be the type that one would forget. He is not very outgoing and would keep to himself, during his childhood he did not have many friends and was an average student. Urdiales was a marine stationed in Southern California when he committed his first murder killing Robbin Brandley a twenty-three year old college student. From July 1988 to August 1996 Urdiales would go on to kill seven more women. Most serial killers kill each victim similar to all the other victims, Urdiales was different though his first murder he stabbed the victim to death while his last he shot in the head.

The man then proceeded to fire multiple shots at them, resulting in the death of Darlene and seriously wounding Mike. Within an hour of the incident, a man called the Vallejo police department, giving them the location of the crime scene as well as claiming responsibility for both that attack and the attack that had occurred in 1968. Despite the evidence including fingerprints, the decoded ciphers, a wave of tips and leads, his confession, and Mageau’s description of him being “A young white male between the age of 26 and 30 having a stocky build with light brown curly hair” the police were unable to track down the zodiac (“The Zodiac Killer”). Then on the evening of September 27, 1969, he struck again, approaching a young couple Cecilia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell. Wearing an executioner styled hood with his symbol on it, he tied them up before brutally stabbing them, he scrawled a message for the police on their car door before leaving the scene. He then called the Napa police department to claim responsibility and provide the location of his victims. Shepard and Hartnell were both alive when emergency services arrived, however Shepard died shortly

The police come to investigate because a neighbor reported there being a disturbance. The killer is not worried though because it is the perfect crime. The killer invites the police in, sits down and chats with them. Eventually the killer grew old of chatting and started to hear a thumping. He thinks it is the heart. Even though the man is dead he can still hear the man’s heart. He does not actually hear the man’s heart, but he is having a schizophrenic episode. In the Cask of Amontillado the killer lures the man to his family’s crypt, intoxicates him and chains him to a wall. Then after he is chained to the wall the killer builds a wall that will wall him in. When the killer is placing the last brick he throws the torch in therefore suffocating the victim. This murder was not discovered for half a century.

Jasmin Guerrero Richard Kuklinski On April 11, 1935 a baby boy was born in Trenton, NJ to Stanley and Anna Kuklinski. His name was Richard Leonard Kuklinski. He became known as one of the most brutal and sadistic serial killers there ever was.

Being the subject his stepfather’s violent physical abuse, Richard had acquired a violent nature early on in his life. He carried this violence from his childhood to his marriage with Shirley. Richard would abuse both his wife and her mother. The abuse his wife endured was both physical and mental, which would often include being raped at knife point up to several times in a day. Richard was also fond of kissing and fondling other women in front of Shirley, forcing her to watch. Their marriage was short lived and the two separated. Under his mother’s recommendation, Richard became a live-in babysitter for a 29-year-old woman, who was a bartender at his favorite local bar, Ginny’s. One month later, his wife filed for divorce. In January of 1966, the same month of the divorce, Richard stabbed another man at Ginny’s. The fight was brought about by his anger at the discovery of his ex-wife’s remarriage after only 2 days of the granted divorce. These events were just the beginning of his violent streaks and became the foundation to his ultimate crime that made him infamous.
