Religions in Brazil
When we often hear the word “Religion” we immediately think of a person praying, worshiping something or the word referring to a God, which isn’t necessarily wrong, because throughout history, people have faced different religions and beliefs much more differently than others in variety of places around the world. Religions like Christianity and Catholicism for example, were peacefully introduced to societies like Brazil during the sixteenth century. However, it was also taught to the native people as something they all must follow throughout their whole lives. “Rio Watercolor Skyline”, an abstract painting of a Brazilian landscape, is similar to “Christ the Redeemer”, a 1931 Brazilian statue of Jesus Christ

The artist wanted his viewers to imagine what it would physically feel and actively think about how the people of Brazil would see the message behind his painting. There are two types of texture present in “Rio Watercolors Skyline”, smooth and rough. For example, the smooth texture with on top of the painting shows how religion motivates people to do good in this world. While on the other hand, the bottom part has paint bleedings and the colors smearing into one another shows how religion also provides an excuse for people to do unspeakable things such as stealing, cheating and destroying the lives of others due to jealousy or even hatred. The artist also uses texture to show how some people hide behind churches and the Holy Bible to make themselves look innocent. Praying day and night, fasting or even going to church every Sunday might not be a flexible schedule for all. “Rio Watercolor skyline” shows this through the use of texture and lines at the bottom of the painting. People are busy working for full hours, trying to make a living for their families and that makes religion as a less of priority in their lives. This shows how much of the importance of religion has decreased throughout history. Religion was a huge part of people’s life where the rules were created based on their traditions. The smooth texture part of the painting also shows that old traditions being better than …show more content…
Both dark and bright tones are present in the art due to the artist use of different layers of colors. The feeling of hope and comfort is shown at the very bottom of “Rio Watercolor Skyline” by the use of colors like light green and yellow, while darkness is shown in the center where Jesus is standing with outstretched arms with darker colors. The artist used different colors in order to show the different views of traditions in Brazil. For example, the color red in “Rio Watercolors Skyline” represents old traditions being dangerous and threatening, while the light green shows the traditions being encouraging and seen as part of God’s blessings. People might be able to attend church meetings if their religion adapts to their lifestyle so they would have more freetime instead of not being able to go because of the church’s demanding and busy schedule. In addition, people feel very uncomfortable about having a tradition or beliefs, because people want something that could guide them. We don’t like being controlled like animals. We want traditions where we feel very proud. A tradition where it’s not just about priests teaching people something over and over again. People want traditions that are valuable. They want something special and meaningful to them instead of it being something that they must o because their parents are doing it or feel
The painting has certain elements that make it unique; the colors of the painting are derived from five main colors that are displayed throughout the painting, red, white, green, yellow and gray. The colors used in this painting are both realistic and symbolic. Luis Jimenez shows a lot of pride in his works that depict his Mexican culture. These colors come together to make a cartoon like image where the characters and features of the painting look as though they are nonrealistic. The car is somewhat distorted into a rounded moving shape and the characters have real accented features. The car seems to be the center of attention and the man inside the car who is driving stands out the most with his bright yellow shirt and his heart tattooed on his forearm the girl is then leaning on him as though it looks as they are driving through some kind of dream. Where the exhaust that comes from the car being red,
As time has progressed, religious scrutiny has expanded. Systems of faith are often written off as fruitless, but religion holds strong purposes. Cultures have religion to explain surroundings, unite individuals, and provide hope.
I like this painting because of the feeling and memories it reminds me of. The water and rocks remind me of all my childhood memories of swimming in the water and hiking mountains. The bright and light colors create a cheerful and
The question often arrived what is religion? There are more than one answer to this depending on one’s culture, identity, ethics and beliefs. Religion can be found in different cultures and throughout the whole period of human history. There is evidence that shows signs of religion such as animal spirits in art and human burials that suggest the belief in life after death. There have been many different answers and definition to what religion is (Van Voorst, 2013). According to Robert E. Van Voorst (2013), religion is
Texture and pattern are very easy to identify in this painting. The street’s cobblestones show texture and pattern in the way that they are arranged. Texture is also demonstrated through the paint strokes on the buildings, the tree, and even the sky. These thick, uneven strokes add a layer of depth and texture to all elements of the painting.
American author Christopher Hitchens once wrote, “Religion is part of the human make-up. It's also part of our cultural and intellectual history. Religion was our first attempt at literature, the texts, our first attempt at cosmology, making sense of where we are in the universe, our first attempt at philosophy.” I enjoy this quote because it acknowledges a key aspect of the human condition: our overwhelming desire to know and understand our place in the world. Religion, in turn, is our attempt at that, a construction of what we believe to be the relationship between us, our surroundings, and beyond. For two cultures, religion played an important role in everyday society: the Aztec Empire in Mesoamerica and the Islamic empires of West Africa. Now, I am going to compare and contrast West African and
In this painting, two visual elements stand out over all the rest. These elements are that of color and texture. Color in art is an element that has to be phenomenal in order to get recognition and true appreciation from the viewers. In this painting, the colors are rich, vivacious and standout as dark, but bold representations of the uniqueness of it all. The use of brown and yellow and green and grey and white all come together in a harmony of color and unity. As for the texture in the painting, it is that of brisk and roughness that is nature. The sharp edges of the bucks rack and the cold, rough edges of the dead tree show
There is a sense of simplicity that even in their poverty there seems to be something good about them. In the painting there is a cat, and a dog. There is also a person that looks like it would be the son playing an instrument. The color palette is mainly brown, beige and grey and uses those colors to show light coming through. The right side of one of the females shows half of her face that looks light and the other half is dark that seems to blend in with the background. Simplicity is shown in their social class. It can also be seen in the food that is being presented which just a loaf of bread, and salt. This tells us the culture of the time period during this time, which was the simplest life. When I saw this painting I had a great deal of empathy for them. They had so little compared to the other family. One family had bronze while the other family had
Religion is defined as the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially personal God or gods according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Humans have a historical tendency to search for greater meaning and purpose and this is why people hold on their religious beliefs. Most people follow the same traditions and values of their parents. Religion can be considered a tradition influenced by values which affect people’s actions and traits. Two examples of religions are Christianity and Buddhism based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha respectively. They have spread from where they originated and had changed the religion has moderated in the past decade, these different religions claim different knowledge and utilize histrionic stories for teaching, and to gain followers and popularity.
The thing that was most prominent in this piece was the range of colours used. Firstly, almost all the colours highly contrast with each other. The first thing that immediately popped out to me was the little boy in the picture. His outfit was a bright red while the rest of the piece was muted earth tones. It makes the boy the focal point and helped me find what I feel is the meaning of the peace. Secondly, the muted earth tones work very well with piece. No colours stand out in particular, which I think was the goal with this piece. The piece is comprised of mossy, almost sickly looking greens and dark chocolate brown, giving off the vibe that maybe the painting was really old, even went it was first revealed. Thirdly, all the colours in the picture feel very cold and distant. The red is almost too bright, and isn’t a warm, easy on the eyes type of red. The greens, grays and browns feel cold and damp, and bring no comfort into the piece. The colour of the child skin himself is very pale, the whole painting not with a hint of warmth or comfort in any part of the piece. The colours of Don Manuel Osorio Manrique De
The lines outline the water, the clouds, the trees, all show the volume and depth of each element. The use of lines surrounding the ocean and land show the division between each land and water. The use of lines on the rocks show the layers and rigid layout of the land instead of just a flat ledge. The painting also has a lot of shape and definition. The clouds have a fullness so you can see the difference between sky and land. I think Bierstadt also used some aerial perspective in this painting. The sky is blue in spots showing that it is further back in the sky. It’s almost like you are looking down on the fishermen from the sky. The light is very bright and tends to stand out over much of the painting. At first glance your eyes are drawn straight to the light because much of the painting is very dark and gloomy. The light would be focal point of the whole piece. The light allows you to clearly see the mountains and the beach. I think a lot of low key values such as the dark clouds and the water were used in the painting. However, a lot of high key values were used such as the sky and the clouds. This painting is one of my all time
In Latin America, this recomposition of the religious is represented mainly by a pluralization, where the Catholic Church has lost its almost monopolistic situation. In this context, the advance of the new-born Protestant groups, the revitalization of ancestral indigenous religions, the expressions of religiosity present in unconventional environments, the emergence of new religious movements, the dissolution of the strong core of secularism (Parker, 1994) and of the anteclericalismo criollo, which is manifested in the recognition and respect of the religious even in one of the most secular states of the continent as it is Mexico.
Religion can be found in all parts of the world, whether that’s from the bottom of the Grand Canyon or the top of the Andes Mountains. Religious groups are often able to give people the support they need that the country may not provide. It gives people hope and leads them to be a better person in life. For example, Buddhism and Hinduism are two popular religions that have many similarities but also have some differences.
The darker colors give the painting its negative connotations of death and grief which are felt by the viewer. There are also other colors used within the painting, such as on the angels, that gives the sense of safety and purity to contrast with the connotations of death in the painting.
Texture. There are smooth parts in this painting such as the skin of the human, but everything else is rough such as the rocks in the picture.
