While Roanoke is lost much of the industry type jobs, it has ventured into other areas expanding more into a knowledge-based area. The local economic development commission developed what they refer to as the Vision 2001-2020 plan to boost the economy in this area by developing a strategy plan do to this. One of the projects that is a part of it is that of the Citywide Brownfield Redevelopment project. This is basically making use and/or the recycling of unused land in the city. Having the ability to recycle the unused land offers many benefits economically for the city a few of which are:
“Creation of green space, and mixed residential and commercial development along the Roanoke River corridor.
• Better utilization of other industrial and commercial zoned property.
• Opportunities for new jobs and housing stock.
• Increased tax base
• Correction of environmental issues that may otherwise remain uncontrolled” (Carr et al.
Jamestown is thought by most of to be the first colony in the New World but this is not the complete truth. Jamestown is considered our first successful colony; however it was not the first attempt at a colony. There were a few attempts to colonize the New World before Jamestown and one in particular that was the most mysterious is the Roanoke colony, also known as the Lost Colony. The colony got this name because the colonists that were there vanished mysteriously with no trace of what happened.
In 1629 King Charles decided to make England a colony. In 1729 north and South Carolina a colony. The colony's were taken over by the King and started to be a colony. The first settlement was Charles Town’s. England was one of the colonies.
How can 115 men, women, and children disappear without a trace? In 1587, the same year the first child was born on American soil, a group led by Sir Walter Raleigh established the colony of Roanoke. Supply ships were scheduled to come every year, but one year the ship was delayed, and when it came back 3 years later, the only two clues remaining were word “Croatoan” carved into a wood post, and the bones of one single man. The most plausible theory for the disappearance of the Roanoke Colony, is that Indians killed some of the colonists whilst the others either were taken as slaves, or joined the Croatoans. When Sir Francis Drake’s supply ship arrived they found corpses of she colonists killed by
Using primary sources allowed me to put the document in perspective to what I had learned about Roanoke. It helped me organize everything into historical context. I value primary sources because they help me create my own judgment based on what was read. Reading the primary sources allowed me as the reader to get into character. To think about the feelings and thoughts about the person who wrote it.
The Virginia Colony economy relied heavily on the mass production of tobacco. Tobacco changed their way of life forever. Before the incredible introduction of tobacco, Virginia was mostly a series of small farms and the population of the communities packed together.
North Carolina tobacco factories manufactured and sold such high volumes of tobacco products world-wide that they became the face of the industry. For example, a Bull Durham smoking

When people disappear nowadays most of the time we find them sooner rather than later or at least find out what happened to them, but in the case of the settlers of Roanoke who disappeared over 400 years ago we never found out what happened to them or where they went, but the downfall of the first attempt at making a colony on Roanoke Island does offer some clues as to what might have happened. In 1584, Queen Elizabeth allowed Sir Walter Ralegh to establish a colony on Roanoke Island and he did begin to do so, but after some time things went south with the Roanoke Indians who already lived there and the English retreated back to England. Against common sense, Ralegh decided to launch a second attempt at making a colony on Roanoke and what happened to them is unknown. In 1586, the second colony was launched but the commander of it had to leave to go back to England for four years, and when he returned he found the colony deserted. The English properly motivated people to want to to be part of the first colony, but when their relationship with the Roanoke Indians ended in
The Roanoke colony was located on the Roanoke Island, in Dare County. This is where North Carolina is located today. In 1584, explorers Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe were the first Europeans to set view the island. They were sent to that particular region by Sir Walter Raleigh with the assignment of exploring the extensive sounds and estuaries in hunt of an ideal location for settlement. Barlowe wrote bright information of Roanoke Island, and when the explorers returned to England a year afterward with two Natives, Manteo and Wanchese, all of London was abuzz with chat of the New World’s wonders.Queen Elizabeth, impressed with the results of the reconnaissance voyage, knighted Raleigh as a reward. The new ground was named “Virginia” in

The discovery of “Fools Gold” is what led to the enriched and powerful development of the mining company. A Baltimore native John Detrick managed to hike along the Quantico Creek and discovered something shiny in the water which just so happened to be pyrite, also known as Iron Sulfide. With this discovery there came three shafts that lived pyrite. The Cabin Branch Pyrite Mine was the only pyrite mine in the area and really helped out the locals by boosting the economy and providing jobs for farmers who worked as laborers for the mine and then went home to tend to their farm after working. The company was such a big success that by 1917, Virginia produced more pyrite than any other state and continued to provide profitable income to families and businesses located in the area. This would be Batestown and Hickory Ridge at the time in history. With a booming economy, the mining company was able to rake in even more of a profit when World War I struck due to the fact that it was able to produce gunpowder during the mid-nineteenth century. The Cabin Branch Mining Company not only produced an income for the locals by pyrite carrying the main ingredient sulfur that was necessary to produce products like gunpowder, bleach, textiles, soap, medicine, etc. but it also contributed to the remarkable advantages the park would make with its preservation of the mine

The Culture of Virginia refers to the distinct human activities and values that take place in, or originate from the Commonwealth of Virginia (Virginia Culture). Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen. Historians think the English adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh suggested the name about 1584. That same year, Elizabeth gave Raleigh permission to colonize the Virginia region (Liberty of Virginia). Virginia has many nicknames as well. The most popular and lasting of Virginia's many nicknames is the ‘Old Dominion’. Unfortunately, I am not referring to the university. This nickname refers to Virginia's status as England's oldest colony in the Americas. Virginia is considered a commonwealth because it is a state in which the supreme power is vested in the people.
For hundreds of years the story of The Lost Colony has been told to children for generations. Contrastly, as time trickles by we find out more information about the “Lost Colony”. Most people believe that Roanoke were killed by the Spanish. However, because of recent discoveries. Roanoke must have been forced to relocate because of a drought in route to Chowan River and intermarried with Native Americans because of these new revelations.
In the mid-1660s, the landlords of the Virginia in North America wanted to make profit as they had already done in Caribbean. They attracted the Caribbean and the English workers with the freedom of religious and the expansion of rights for the English. At the same time, the Tobacco agriculture played an important role in the economic of Virginia. Since the profit was so observable, the settlers acquired land by taking the land of the Native American. They recruited workers from England which was the large part of labor in Virginia until 1680s.
