Most commonly known for its beauty, Rockingham County is comprised of six metropolitan cities, of which Harrisonburg holds the county seat (Rockingham County). Harrisonburg, VA is an independent city fully located within the borders of Rockingham County. Founded in 1779, Harrisonburg has prided itself on its beauty as well as its politeness. Nicknamed as “the friendly city”, Harrisonburg is commonly known for its developing downtown district, James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University (About Harrisonburg, 2014). Due to a number of different factors, the population of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County has steadily increased since the 2010 Census (QuickFacts, 2010). Although beneficial for economic development, the rise in population has been accompanied by a rise in the community crime rate.
