Robert Frost laid, down the foundation for many poets who wanted to get a good start in there early career of poetry. Robert frost started off with a modest poem which was called “My Butterfly”; he started to get better know off of this poem and grew his career from here. Robert Frost laid, down the path for many poets and many more to come through his conventionalism poems’. Robert Frost was an amazing poet who will continue to grow through many people and still teach many lessons through his poetry. The way of a poet can teach and touch many people’s lives within; Robert Frost’s poem can teach and have a strong impact.

These poets used distinctive rhythm and style to express their styles, poetic themes, outlook on life, and had their share of influence on the American society. This paper uses the basis of these styles, themes, outlook on life and subsequent influence on the American society to compare three prolific poets who ventured into this literature genre: Robert Frost, Mary Oliver, and Maya Angelou. Robert Frost is one of the most well-known, publicly celebrated, and influential modern poets in American History. Even from an early age Frost was extremely intelligent even skipping grades and finishing at the top of his high school class (Fagan). After graduating high school, Frost was discouraged to begin writing because he thought that it would take twenty years to set up a writing career (Fagan). After finally beginning his career, Frost loved writing and used it to express himself and found his greatest muses in his wife and children (Fagan).
On March 26, 1874, Robert Lee Frost was born to Isabelle Moodie and William Prescott Frost Junior. He was named after Robert E. Lee a general of the Confederate army. Frost was also not very religious. According to Frost, God has played a joke on him and he says, "Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on thee, and I'll forgive thy great big joke on me" (C. 5). Frost graduated from a school in Lawrence in 1892. He did have some college, but he eventually dropped out. He later married Elinor White in 1895 soon after his work My Butterfly: An Elegy was published. They had five children together. I picked Robert Frost because of how he expressed life's choices in The Road Not Taken. I also picked him because I have been reading his poems since I was a child along with poems by Shel Silverstein.

In his lifetime, Frost received four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry, and the Congressional Gold Medal. However, Robert Frost’s life was not always full of fame and wealth; he had a very difficult life from the very beginning. At age 11, his father died of tuberculosis; fifteen years later, his mother died of cancer. Frost committed his younger sister to a mental hospital, and many years later, committed his own daughter to a mental hospital as well. Both Robert and his wife Elinor suffered from depression throughout their lives, but considering the premature deaths of three of their children and the suicide of another, both maintained sanity very well. His father, William Prescott, was a journalist and his mother, Isabelle Moodie, was a teacher. The two parents’ careers carved the pathway for this young man. A time after Robert Frost was born, he and his family moved to New England, where his family had originally come from. But a tragedy came in 1885 when Frost was only 11: his father passed away. The now 16 year old began to construct poetry. Words seemingly entered his mind and came out in the form of words on paper. After finishing High School, the young man would read nothing but British Poems. This newly established love of poetry forced Frost to want to write even more.
