There are many different ways to interpret a poem. While completing an analysis of Robert Frost's poem “The Road Not Taken” there were some key factors to be considered that provide a better insight of how the poem was developed and what was the hidden meaning behind the words. The key factors found in the analysis are symbolism, indistinctness, and irony. There are many different ways to express symbolism, and many ways to interpret it. The most significant use of symbolism was in the very first line of the poem, which describes a fork in the road in where the author must choose which path to take.

Robert Frosts “The Road Not Taken” is more symbolic of a choice one must make in their life in attempt to foresee the outcome before reaching the end, than it is about choosing the right path in the woods.

The analysis of “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost has been up for debate since the poem release in 1916. It is known to be one of the most frequently misinterpreted poems of all time, and even Robert Frost himself has said the poem is “tricky” to comprehend (The). When analyzing this poem many readers tend to focus only on the last lines of the poem and get caught in a trap of selective-interpretation. Quite a few people after reading Robert Frost’s poem firmly conclude that this poem is about non-conformity and individualism, however, that is not the case. "The road not taken" is a poem about a man coming across two different paths in the wood. One of the roads was overgrown and curved into the woods where he could no longer see it. The other was grassy, and looked as if it hadn't been travelled much. He deduced after a while that maybe, at some point, the roads would meet up and join together. He took the road that seemed less used, and found it very rewarding. I took this as an analogy of making a hard decision and it paying off in the end.

So I decided to write an explication essay on the poem “The Road Not Taken”. The poem is by Robert Frost and it tells the story about a man who is thinking about something he had done before. Even though what he did wasn’t looked as being good or bad, it was indicated the decision he made had an outcome that caused a shift in his life.

In Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”, Frost shows the everyday human struggle to make a choice that could change the course of one’s life. In his poem, a person has the choice to take one road or the other. One road is worn out from many people taking it, and the other is barely touched, for fewer have taken that road. Throughout the poem, the speaker learns that just because so many other people have done one thing, or walked one way, does not mean everyone has to. Sometimes you just have to go your own way.

Whichever road is taken will be final and will determine the direction that their life takes. Frost drives this poem by a calm and collective narrative, spoken by the traveler of the diverged roads. In the ending of the poem, regret is displayed after realizing the wrong choices were made.

“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost also shows the traveler making his own moral decisions. The traveler values perseverance. At the fork in the road, the traveler takes the less traveled path. The dark, overgrown, and unpredictable path. As he walks along the path, he doesn’t lose sight of what his goal is, and doesn’t even consider going back and taking the other path. His mind is set on taking the more challenging path, no matter how hard it is. “Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.” (Frost The Road Not Taken) Frost says, the character in his poem is a representation of his friend Edward Thomas. Robert Frost admires his Welsh friend, because he is known for making decisions and never looking back on them. Although the traveler had originally wanted to travel down both roads, and hopes someday he can, he still chooses to pick the path less traveled by. In those lines, this traveler is doubting he would ever get the chance to come back, and pick between the two roads again, so he is happy and grateful he picked the road that would benefit him, and challenge him the most. “The Road Not taken” is a poem that has a very extravagant usage of words. All of them fall together perfectly. This lavish poem by Robert Frost, shows how he had a choice of two roads to travel & could only go down one. When he looks back he debates on his decision & wonders if he’ll ever go back to the two roads & see the one he had not yet explore. The poet explains while staying placid.

The poem, The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost is about someone who is trying to decide which road to take, the one everyone uses or the one that is less used. In the end, the person decided to take the road less traveled and says the outcome made all the difference. This poem is a metaphor that teaches you to not always make the easiest choice or the one everyone else does. To me, this poem means that in life you may have many different choices for a situation and you can either make the choice that’s simple and you can see the outcome or you can take a more adventurous choice. In the poem, the person decides to choose a more adventurous path and appreciates the outcome.

As a result, Frost’s life was fundamentally unique and challenging that it would have been had chosen the most well-traveled path. Similarly, in the journey of life, I have made many decisions and chosen many paths for myself. Each decision I made could be good or bad, but there is no right and wrong because different pathways have different views.

This is a wonderful poem with many different themes and ideas. One of the biggest themes is not being afraid to take a chance. Some of the other themes include, not following the crowd, trying new things, and standing for something. This poem stated that the author "took the one (road) less traveled by, and that has made all the difference" so the author is telling the reader that we too should not be afraid to take another path.

Robert Frost's poem “The Road Not Taken” describes a traveler facing a choice, he can either choose the road not taken, or he can choose the road most traveled by. He does not know where either road might lead, but in order to continue with his journey, he can pick only one road. He analyses both roads for the possibilities of where each may take him in his journey. Frost's traveler realizes that regret is inevitable. Regardless of his choice, he knows that he will miss the experiences he might have encountered on the road not taken. Frost, uses literary elements, such as Denotation and Connotation, Symbolism, alliteration, consonance, and assonance in order to convey massage.
