Rock and roll is a genre that started with groups wanting to try something new, and grunge took that desire to an all new level. Grunge mixed pieces of punk, heavy metal, and some pop in to one all new genre. The effects of grunge brought the subgenres Riot Grrrl, Slacker Rock, and Britpop. All three of these subgenres had their own effects on culture and created a new community around them. Riot Grrrl and Slacker Rock especially had a life style formed around them. Riot Grrrl was a fight against the very present sexism of the time. This subgenre helped girls of sexual abuse, promoted feminism, and supported women in everything they do. The founder of Slacker Rock was Pavement. Pavement set the stage for Slacker Rocks lo-fi sound. The band Beck took that lo-fi sounds and put even more styles with it. Their single “Loser” had elements of blues, hip-hop, rap, and many more. The third subgenre was Britpop. Britpop showed the litter and happier side of grunge. This subgenre started when bands tried to move backward toward traditional British pop. This is where major bands like Oasis and Blur came in to the scene. The 1990s had a lot going on in the music world. New wave and noise music styles were becoming popular, and from there the genre of grunge was born. Even though the grunge movement was everywhere the powerhouse of grunge was in Seattle. The band to start everything off was The Pixies, even though they were a Boston-based band. The Pixies are said to be the inspiration for a lot of grunge bands at the time. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Butthole Surfers were also rising in the ranks and turning heads. This time also gave us the music style of punk rock. There was a lot going on in the world of music during the 1990s, and this time really helped push rock music
