Another Blunder: Roger Godell strikes (out) again Bounty Gate, Bully Gate, Incontinency In Punishments, Thursday Night Football every week, Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy, the fake controversy that was Deflate Gate, Appealing Judge Berman’s decision, and now this. According to multiple media outlets (ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, and NBC Sports) commissioner Rodger Goodell will not attend the NFL’s season opener between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Just when you thought Goodell couldn’t make any more mistakes, he does. How can you not attend the season opener? Not including from the Super Bowl, this is the biggest day of the NFL season. Since, Goodell took over in 2006, he has
The saying goes, when it rains it pours and for the NFL that is what happened when dangers of the sport were exposed. What the NFL did, however, was deny that any of these dangers were accurate. When Dr.
Though this NFL conduct is in the light, it is unnecessary because the U.S. criminal justice system has the ability to end the professional sports careers of society’s worst criminals. Everyone asked themselves how could such a successful, talented person throw their opportunity away like this? Crimes from the past always catch up and come to light in the justice system. The NFL from now on is trying to prevent incidents like this from happening from making their off field standards stronger, and making consequences stronger that come with
If any of these player safety rules have been broken recently, the NFL has come down swiftly and harshly against the culprits. These swift and efficient actions performed by the NFL have taken notice by the parents and fans of the sport. These forms of punishments come through fines, suspensions, and in extreme cases bans from the league for years or even indefinitely. Recently a defensive coordinator on the New Orleans Saints was found to have installed a “bounty program” on his defense. This program would fund the defensive players with bonuses for various actions in a game. Although this may seem okay, it is actually highly illegal in the NFL. This bounty program would fund the players for knocking out other athletes they were competing against. Injuring players was one of many forms of bonuses that players would be able to accrue. The problem with this in sports is because football is already violent enough. Now teams are actually “gunning” to injure others on purpose. The NFL’s quick and extreme punishments for the creation and participation in this bounty case definitely put the player’s safety aspect into the mainstream of what the NFL is worrying about these days.
The court system may have allowed many of these players to walk away from very serious crimes with inadequate punishment while the NFL’s response did little to discourage criminal behavior. Because of this, the first part of the solution lies with the judicial system to begin holding players accountable to the same standards as the average American citizen. Michael Vick served just a year and a half behind bars in a state that routinely sentences individuals to five-year terms for the same crime (Humane Society). In the case of O.J. Simpson, a jury of his peers allowed him to walk out of a courtroom a free man despite compelling
When it comes to sports, a competitive mindset is key. In American football, it’s hard not to win without communication and teamwork. In the NFL playoffs of 2015, the New England Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 for the AFC Championship. In a game that originally portrayed the Patriots as an offensive force to be reckoned with, ended out to be a game that goes down in history. After further investigation, the NFL found 11 of the Patriots' 12 footballs in the game to be underinflated by about 2 pounds below the NFL’s requirement. Now whether the allegations are determined to be true or not, it does raise some speculation about the truth of the AFC
There are more calls for football to be banned, with many citing numerous safety issues. It is yet to be seen how the league will operate in the future. Hopefully, the NFL can do even more to protect its players in future. This investment is a step in the right direction, both for the league’s image and more importantly player
For a second time, Goodell was faced with a tough ruling to make. This time in Deflategate, when the Patriots were accused of taking air out of their footballs thereby making them easier to catch and throw, many people thought their punishment was too severe. This time the punishment was directed towards Tom Brady, their star quarterback. This time Goodell attempted to fine Brady one million dollars and a 4 game suspension without pay.
“Despite its knowledge and controlling role in governing player conduct on and off the field, the NFL turned a blind eye to the risk and failed to warn and or impose safety regulations governing this well-recognized health and safety problem.” (“Lawsuit”).
On October 15, 2012, a fan of the New Orleans Saints, David Mancina filed a lawsuit against the National Football League (NFL) and its commissioner Roger Goodell. Mr. Mancina’s complaint was framed as a class action lawsuit representing all season and single ticket holders for the Saints games during the 2012-2013 season. The basis of his lawsuit stems from the NFL’s punishment to the Saints organization in connection with the bounty scandal. On March 21, 2012, following an investigation, the NFL imposed a punishment against the Saints, with the head coach, assistant coach, general manager, and several players being suspended. Additionally, the team was required to forfeit its second round of draft choices in 2012 and 2013.
As everyone who has access to a television or the Internet knows, a lot of the major headlines today are dealing with the domestic violence problem in the National Football League. In the article written by Thomas Barrabi in the International Business Times, “NFL’s History of Domestic Violence Extends Beyond Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson Abuse Cases”, it addresses the discrepancies the NFL has displayed throughout the years when it comes to disciplining the players involved in domestic violence disputes. This article takes a look at the NFL’s position on the crime of domestic violence throughout the years and today and also what they have done
The NFl is a place where fans can go and forget about their worries but, the NFL has now been corrupted with political opinion and many fans are unhappy about it. The recent stunt is proving nothing to change the causes that is” supposedly” trying to stop. In the blog “Now I have had enough” by Brandon
In today’s NFL, injuries, particularly head injuries, have become a common occurrence regardless of the amount of preventative training that the athletes invest in. These reoccurring head injuries have led to the deaths of former players and yet, instead of their families accepting that it was the player’s decision to continue playing, they somehow choose to blame the NFL as if the NFL committee were the ones creating the injuries to happen or forcing them to play through it. The NFL isn’t to blame for concussions sustained while playing the game because the coaches, medical staff, and players allow continuous play, creation of financial aid programs, new injury policies, and new equipment technology.
Not only had the DeflateGate investigation which has made people question their process, but also with Ray Rice.
Tuesday, June 23th was not just any ordinary quiet day for the press. Reporters camped out in front of the NFL headquarter trying to get their hands on any latest information about Tom Brady’s appeals hearing. It opened at 9:30 ap and lasted for about 10 hour.
The players and teams receive too much leeway when they are involved with crimes or misconducts. They have a “distorted view of themselves” (White) which induces them to “overvalue their abilities and are proud and condescending when relating to others” (White). The league is responsible for investigating and taking action against the players and teams that do not follow the NFL Personal Conduct Policy which the league describes as avoiding “conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the National Football League” (ESPN). This is required to be accepted by all workers in the NFL: players, general managers, coaches, owners, sideline/team employees, and even game officials. Roger Goodell, because of his title and job description, is delegated to be the “the judge and the jury in individual cases” (Pease). This responsibility he has is not a wise way of handling cases because there needs to be some sort of committee involved in order to give a thorough, well balanced, opinion and
