Once these characteristics have been outlined and briefly discussed, emphasis will be placed upon one specific health improvement issue.
Justification of the local area
For this specific community profile the chosen geographical area is Hartlepool. The writer felt this to be an appropriate choice as it is a local area and could well be somewhere they work in their future career in paediatric nursing.
Definition of a community
A body of individuals who have a sense of common identity may be defined as a community (Slack, 1998). A community is also described as having similar attitudes or interests in common: the people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values or responsibilities; society: a group of people living in the same place or having certain characteristics in common (Oxford Dictionary, 2013). The purpose of a community profile is to provide a more in-depth understanding of a community and its characteristics.
Population level within Hartlepool and the UK
Hartlepool Council (2015) stated that the current population level within the local area stands at approximately 98,000 residents (Bramley, no date). This number is somewhat higher than in previous years with the population standing at 86,713 in 2010 (Public Health England 2015). This shows that between 2010 and 2015 the population increased by 13% (Public health England, 2015). Ethnic minorities total
Health promotion includes providing activities that improve a person’s health. These activities assist patients to “maintain or enhance their present levels of health. Health promotion activities motivate people to act positively to reach more stable levels of health” (Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 97). In order for nurses to assist patients in obtaining healthy lifestyles, they must first assess a patient’s perception of health. The World Health Organization defines health as a “state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (as cited in Potter & Perry, 2005, p. 91). There are many nursing theories that are based on an individual’s perception of health. This paper will
This report is an in depth community profile covering the Stockton-on-Tees area of Teesside within the North East of England. Outlining statistical information to key areas including population, immigration, age, gender,
According to Stanhope and Lancaster (2008) defines a community as: “A social group determined by geographic boundaries and/or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with one another. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values, and social institutions” (World Health Organization [WHO], 1974, pg. 7).
A community is a group of people who live in the same area, interact with each other, and share certain norms and values. A community is defined as a locality-based entity, composed of systems of formal organizations reflecting societal institutions, informal groups, and aggregates that are interdependent and whose function or expressed intent is to meet a wide variety of collective needs (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012).
• A rise in the older population, 75 yrs and over, from 9% to 13% (29,000) of the total population is estimated by 2031 for Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot.
Community A community is a group of people interacting in a meaningful way with regard to something they share in common. It used to be that a community, in order to function as a group and interact, had to be in the same geographic location or at least within driving distance. Since the internet has now become so widely available we find that people with common interests and goals are reaching across vast distances to interact with each other. There is even language translation software available that can translate other languages into one's own.
The topic that I selected for my Capstone project is the role of a nurse practitioner in different settings, such as hospitals, doctor’s office, and clinics. I chose this topic because my goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, and because other team members, such as respiratory therapist, technicians, pharmacist, and also patients confuse the role of a register nurse with the role of a nurse practitioner. Many times the care of the patients in the emergency department is provided by a nurse practitioner; later when the hospital send the survey to the patients about how was the care they received during their visit, we received answers like, “everything was good but I never see the doctor only nurses”.
I have enjoyed reading your post, Laney. You have provided a concrete definition for a community. I agree with you. A community consists of more than just a group of people within a determined geographical location (University of Kansas, 2015). There are other aspects that are unique to each community. Individuals in each community share similar features that are unique to them. They share similar values, culture, and traditions. A community can also be defined by its demographics, environment, economics, health, and quality of life (University of Kansas, 2015). A community can also be defined by the number and type of establishments that it contains, such as universities, churches, libraries, and hospitals (University of Kansas, 2015). A
The role that nurse practitioner (NP) plays within the increasing complex health care system is a constant changing role with the Consensus Model and the introduction of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. The scope of the nurse practitioner (NP) includes the care of the young, the old, the sick and the well. The educational needs of a nurse practitioner vary greatly from that of a Registered Nurse (RN), in the amount of education as well as the focus of the education. NPs provide coordinated primary care with the use of comprehensive health histories and physical examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, the management of medications and therapies, ordering and interpreting tests results, and educating and
The health system has experienced rapid changes and multifaceted shift in patient care and leadership– business concepts, administrative roles, and patient care continuum. As a result, changes have greatly influenced the role assumed by nursing leaders in the past 10 years. Subsequently, nurse leaders redefined their roles in the nursing field and executive arena, moving away from traditional nursing roles in the organizational chart to equal roles in the Chief suites (C-suites). Therefore, as nurse leaders move from clinical units to the boardrooms, their imprints leave a mark to all nurses reporting to them. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, “The Future of Nursing,” discusses vital concepts on nursing leaderships. As based from the same report, three fundamental concepts of how the roles of Chief Nurse Officers impact nurses can be identified - Executive Role Definitions, Expertise and Knowledge Transformation, and Leadership Representation and Networking.
The communities in which we are a part of, are not merely the one within our immediate surroundings, but rather an association of the factors that are common to a group of individuals. There is a variation in the communities in which I am a part of. Some of these communities include a school community, a church community, a recreation community, a tourist community and a homeless community.
Humans are social beings and naturally long to be a part of some kind of group or a larger community. McKanzie and Pinger (2014) describe community as a collective body of individuals identified by common characteristics. Furthermore, communities can have positive and sometimes negative effect on its members (McKanzie & Pinger, 2014). It is possible that one individual belongs to many different communities that can be based on geographic location, lifestyle, social groups, ethnic relations, common interest, work, professional and many other communities.
The definition of community when I google it, is “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I would describe community as a group of people who have common goals, thoughts, or interests.
This paper explores the roles that nurses play in bereavement care and how people react differently to the loss of a loved one during the bereavement process such as uncomplicated grief reactions versus complicated grief. The nurse’s role in disenfranchised grief is also explored in detail as to how the nurse can recognize grief from disenfranchised grief. The different types of disenfranchised grief are explained in detail and how a person may experience the different types. The four tasks of mourning are also identified and explained as to how a person must move through these stages so that they may be able to establish a new social life after the loss of a loved one. It is explained in this paper how a nurse can better care for their
Nurses play a fundamental role within the health care system. The nurse profession is among the very demanding professions globally and requires a lot of commitment and dedication to the job. While most people perceive nurses as people who only oversee a shot at healthcare facilities, nurses play roles such as caregiving, communicating, teaching, decision-making, managing of healthcare facilities, and advocating on behalf of patients (Balas & Boren, 2013). As a contextual basis for efficient and effective healthcare delivery, the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted the primary health care (PHC) strategy in 1978 (Wensing et al., 2016). The PHC encompasses basic curative and medical care that ought to be given to patients at the initial
