The argument suggests that protective gear will reduce the risk of injury for roller skaters because 75 percent of accidents were observed to be involving roller skaters with no protective equipment. This argument is found to be flawed in various ways, among which three stand out the most. First, the argument assumes 75% to be a significant number. While 75% of 5,000 accidents is quite horrendous, two out of three injuries also entails the same result. Threrefore, the argument should put the statistic in perspective in terms of magnitude. Moreover, the benchmark needs to be defined as well. 75% might be a horrific indicator in some areas while it could be deemed acceptable in some others. For instance, Second, the argument assumes that lack
One of the most common truths that people have a problem with when the subject is contact sports is the injuries that are involved in playing such sports. Sports such as Football, Rugby, Lacrosse, and Hockey are all considered contact sports due to the volume of hitting and personal contact that occurs when one plays these kinds of sports. All though friendships and building one's character can take place when playing a contact sport, the risk outweigh the reward when it comes to the research done on injuries that occur every year when playing sports such as the ones
This belief that the players are safe when they are actually at risk could cause them to do things they would not have done otherwise. Ultimately, protective gear results in more harm than good. Niedfeldt supports the idea of this false security when he shares that as a result of wearing protective headgear in his study, women attacked the balls with more vigor and added to the impact due to the impression of safety (Niedfeldt). The results of this study show that individuals wearing protective headgear attack the soccer ball in a more dangerous manner that they would not have done without the false sense of safety that they feel because of this gear. Therefore, Niedfeldt’s trial demonstrates the fact that protective headgear has the potential to cause more damage to athletes than if they did not wear the gear. Often times, this phenomenon is known as the Superman effect which has been proven to occur when individuals feel more invincible than they really are. This ultimately causes reckless and aggressive behavior despite the fact that what these athletes are feeling is a false sense of security (Gray). Because of the superman effect, a soccer player with experience relating to protective headgear demonstrates that she obtained a concussion despite wearing protective headgear. Due to her experience, she illustrates that
Those familiar with skiing know that there are risks involved when one chooses to participate in the sport. Those risks, however, should be associated with self-inflicted harm caused by mistakes that a skier may make and not unforeseen obstacles and dangerous situations. The injuries sustained by Alex Johnson on the slopes at Bethlehem Ice Solutions (BIS) were not self-inflicted; far from it. They were the result of negligence on the part of BIS who failed to mark boundaries that separates the slopes and caused Craig to crossover onto another slope, walking directly into Alex’s path and colliding into
I will also use the evolution of men's lacrosse to compare the differing need for certain protective equipment. Since each sport utilizes different rules and contact guidelines, it is expected that they should require different gear. Therefore, I must also examine the different proposals for protective gear. While some push for soft, padded helmets, other believe full, hard shell helmets, similar to that used in men's lacrosse, may be necessary. To draft my argument, I will also heavily examine the decision in Florida to require soft protective headgear for all female high school lacrosse, for they are the first state to issue such drastic regulations. Overall, I will utilize this information in accordance with the four most important perspectives— the parent, the player, the coach, and the expert— to argue the validity and necessity of headgear in women's lacrosse. A As a lacrosse player of three years, I have personally witnessed several teammates be run over by opponents twice their size. I have even

In 2017, a new toy called the “fidget spinner” was seen in every child’s hand throughout classrooms and at home. The demand for this product was, and still is, like none other, and it seems to have taken over the world. During school hours, we take the time to learn about subjects that will allow us to thrive later on in life. However, students’ focus in class has decreased due to this new craze. Fidget spinners should not be allowed in classrooms because they are a distraction, they are dangerous, and they are not always used for ADHD/anxiety purposes.
equipment. There are injuries that the vests and helmets can’t protect, but they protect the
There is one piece of body protection that causes the most damage to players – shoulder pads. Primary characteristics of shoulder pads include “a plastic shell, or more recently, rigid foam, on the exterior of the shoulder cap, along with softer foam in the cap interior. The intent of the shell is to distribute the impact energy and force over a larger region of the pad and therefore protect the shoulder” (Virani, et al). This outer shell is what allows players to deal maximum damage when body checking. While this is excellent for the wearer, anyone they collide with will suffer the consequences of being hit with this durable and stiff pad. A study conducted by Shane Virani measured the impact force of an ice hockey player’s shoulder pads on
Growing up my mother made my twin brother and I do gymnastics for a couple of years at a gym near our home town. Being so young I though nothing of it and that it was fun because I was swinging, jumping, and bouncing into foam pits. My brother and I looking back at it were some of the only guys in the gymnastics class as the girls predominately outnumbered the guys. This reminds me of the some of the articles we read earlier in the semester and how certain sports are labeled as male and female dominated. My brother and I were so young that we had no idea the difference between soccer or gymnastics was and were simply having fun without a care in the world. Gymnastics in the eyes of society is considered a more feminine sport because the athletes
Banning skateboarding is on the rise, kids are getting hurt every day . about 1500 kids are breaking bones while skateboarding but there are about 2000 that break bones while walking down the street . but perhaps you like skateboarding but say you don’t like skateboarding . when kids ride skateboards they get physical exercise and it may help with emotion some people ride just to clear there mind up . some ride just to get out and be ably to do stuff with friends. 5 she started to be robustly challenged by younger skaters, near the end of her career,. However, she held off these competitors and at the 1936 Winter Olympics went on to win her third Olympic title. albeit in very divisive situation with Cecilia Colledge finishing a very close second. Indeed, after the school figures section at the 1936 Olympic competition, Colledge and Henie were virtually neck and neck with Colledge trailing by just a few points. The proximity of the competition infuriated Henie, who, when the result for that section was posted on a wall in the competitors' lounge, swiped the piece of paper and tore it into little pieces. after Henie landed the plum position of skating last, The draw for the free skating then came under
Protective gear has been developed to help prevent traumas but there is not one piece of gear that can guarantee no injury while being used during the game. The most common type of gear used is a helmet. It helps to reduce shock to the head but it does not eliminate
Besides rollershoes is a venturous sport, which means it needs professional and systematical train, and they are absolutely lacking, what’s more, this kind of sport needs special
One day i was late to school and the only option was my brothers skateboard. At the time I didn’t know how to ride a skateboard or let alone know how to do tricks on it. I ended up skating to school. I fell a couple of times but I made it to school with some scrapes and bruises. After that i skated everyday just to make sure i wouldn't fall like the last time. After a couple of weeks I got the hang of it and started doing tricks on it. Unfortunately, the first have my skateboard there so i can skate to school and not be late. Even though I fell and it may have seemed bad that I fell off the skateboard, I learned how to skate which was a ¨blessing in disguise¨. Another quote that can be related to this scenario is ¨Learn from your mistakes¨.
Yes fidget spinners should absolutely be allowed in classrooms, under the right circumstances. They help kids that have disorders that make it harder to concentrate, like ADD, Autism, anxiety, and ADHD.
