Is it possible to fall in love with two completely different personalities? Romeo is a living proof of that. He is the main character of Romeo and Juliet, a masterpiece of the Bard. Romeo Montague falls in love with Rosaline and with Juliet. They have very traits. In the beginning of the story, Rosaline refuses Romeo's love. She is only known by the speech of the other characters, specially Romeo, so it's difficult to know who she actually is. Juliet is the main character, just like Romeo, and she is his wife. She is from Capulet's family, the archenemy of the Montagues, so they should hate each other. Even with the hate between families, the couple found a way to be together. Juliet and Rosaline are completely the opposite because of their …show more content…
A person who listens to the heart, makes actions based on her/his emotions and feelings. On the other side, the ones who listen their heads, think before act and usually have a plan. Juliet follows her heart because she does whatever her emotions tell her to do. This makes her very dramatic, like when she says "And with this knife I'll help it presently. God Joined my heart with Romeo's, thou our hands." She is determinated to end with her own life because of her emotions, specifically love. Rosaline acts in a contracting way. Even when Romeo opens himself to her, she reacts cold and refuses his love. If she listened to her heart, she would open the gate of love, and accepted. Juliet is a very emotional girl, while Rosaline thinks after taking …show more content…
Juliet, a brave girl, takes a lot of risks. She makes a very dangerous decision when she confronts her father "Not proud you have". She says that she will disobey what her father wants because she doesn't like his decision. He says that if she doesn't do what he wants, she won't be in Capulet's family anymore. She does a very risky decision. Rosaline is not that inconsequent. When she says "no" to Romeo is because she doesn't want to be in something so uncertainly like love. Love is a box of chocolate because the people never know witch flavor they are going to get. They can be very happy, or it can be a disaster. Rosaline is afraid that love can harm her, so she rather doesn't take the chance. Juliet thinks about now, that makes her very brave, but Rosaline wants her heart to be
Romeo is very dramatic and obsessed with love. In the beginning he is obsessed with being in love, it doesn't seem like he loves Rosaline, he just wants to be in love with someone. But by the end of the book I think he might actually love Juliet.
Romeo is portrayed as an emotional and reckless character. His friend Mercutio and Fr. Lawrence comment on Romeo’s fickle attitude when he immediately falls in love with Juliet completely forgetting about Rosaline, his first love. Romeo quotes,” Did my heart love until now? Foreswear it sight, for I never saw true beauty until this night”. His love for Rosaline was superficial. Juliet transforms Romeo’s immature and erotic infatuation to true and constant love. After meeting Juliet he matures very quickly. Maybe Romeo’s love for Juliet is so intense because unlike Rosaline, Juliet reciprocates his
Moreover, Romeo through his infatuation with Rosaline learned valuable lessons that help him come to appreciate and understand the feelings he experiences with Juliet. Romeo felt rejection, sorrow, and misery from his infatuation with Rosaline which is seen when he is talking to Benvolio, “In sadness, cousin, I do love a woman” this particular quote shows the sadness or sorrow he feels from the feelings for Rosaline (1.1.201). Also when he says “She hath forsworn to love”, the words Romeo speaks allow it to be inferred that his feelings for her have been rejected (1.1.220). “At the opening of the play [Romeo] is maundering about like an erotic woman novelist, sighing and groaning because Rosaline will not listen to his tenders of affection” revealing that Romeo’s love was rejected and was upset because of this, allowing him to learn these feelings and what it is like to be rejected by the one he had feelings for (Northwood 19). Due to having felt these emotions from his infatuation, when he finds his love for Juliet and receives love and acceptance from her. Since he went so long, feeling sorrow and rejection when he finally finds Juliet, he can fully appreciate the love and acceptance he is given which intensifies his love for her and does the opposite of weakening the credibility of his love. Through his infatuation with Rosaline, he was able to grow as a person and become able to fully commit to his love for Juliet.
Juliet’s love and loyalty towards Romeo, and her developing character do not only play an important role in motivating her in speaking the lines that she does, but also in motivating her actions. Despite all the current events that have occurred; events that have affected her state of mind, Juliet decides to remain true and faithful to Romeo.
Furthermore, Romeo starts the whole tragedy. True, Juliet acts naïve, nonetheless Romeo acts hastily by encouraging the relationship. Prior to Romeo and Juliet’s encounter, Romeo is in an infatuation with Rosaline. In Act 1.1, Romeo depicts Rosaline's beauty and says, "She is too fair, too wise, wisely too fair." Romeo’s love for Rosaline is only skin deep and
However, at the party he meets Juliet for the first time, and immediately falls in love with her: “Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! / For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” Romeo, who was in love with Rosaline until a moment ago, completely forgets about her and is now all focused on Juliet. But what is very surprising is not the fact that he is in love with his enemy’s daughter, the astonishing thing is the speed at which he falls in love with her. Soon, in fact, he and Juliet kiss each other: “Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.” However, Romeo’s characteristics to love so deeply Juliet is just a symbol of his lacking the capacity of moderation for intense feelings of all kind. Had Romeo stopped himself from being so deeply caught up by Juliet’s beauty, the tragedy would have never happened.
Romeo seems to be miserable as he is in love with Rosaline yet Rosaline is not in love with him. Once Romeo learns that the Capulet’s are holding a party at which Rosaline is attending he risks his life just to be with the one he loves. Romeo is passionate for love.
His love for Juliet was very true and his love for Rosaline was maybe just a crush. The love that Romeo got for Juliet is true love not superficial like the love he got for Rosaline. Romeo
As both characters seem to feel love and adoration between each other, attention on Romeos abrupt love and obsession with Rosaline poses the subject of Romeos possible lack
As a result of that, he creates a depressed environment around him as Montague says, “Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out, and makes himself an artificial night” (1.1.142-143). Revealing just how much Rosaline’s rejections affects him. Rosaline has taken an oath of chastity, this plays a big role in his sadness as this leaves her uncharmed by Romeo, making her, “in strong proof of chastity well armed, from love’s weak childish bow she lives uncharmed” (1.1.218-219). Romeo’s love for Rosaline seems more like an obsession than love as it affects Romeo’s
Rosaline is aware of Romeos ‘feelings’ towards her and spurns his advances, yet Romeo takes this rejection as encouragement and continues to attempt to woo her. These are strong features of courtly love. Paris treats his ‘love’ in a different manner, but the same features are there. He goes to meet Lord Capulet and arranges to marry Juliet, although he has never met her.
His emotions are the only things he acts upon, so once his feelings for Rosaline are gone, all of his sadness is gone as well. Even though he was completely infatuated with Rosaline just a day before, Juliet has completely replaced her after meeting her just once. Possibly, if Romeo had thought through his feelings for Juliet more he wouldn’t have acted so rashly which inevitably he paid the price of death for. Significantly, Romeo’s impulsiveness is highlighted in his trivial understanding of death when he says, “’and fall upon the ground as I do now, taking the measure of an unmade grave’” (III.iii.73-74).
His love for Rosaline was more like puppy love. However, his love for Juliet is: passionate, endless, and blinding. When Romeo sees Juliet at the party, he immediately falls in love with her beauty. Romeo quotes that Juliet's beauty is like the beautiful stars in the sky. His love for her is passionate.
Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare is one of the most well-known tragedies in love story history. The death of two young lovers brought two feuding families together. The secondary character Rosaline plays an important role in the development and ending of the tragedy. This character also defines a major theme of unanswered love in the play. Juliet was not Romeo’s first true love.
The play of Romeo and Juliet is different from William Shakespeare’s other tragedies in that there is not a clear distinction of individual heroes. The two protagonists are more passive than active; both are naïve and lacking understanding. The hero is often thought to be the romantic, yet often hysterical, Romeo. But Romeo’s immoral background, emotional outbursts, mishap murders, and foolish actions make him a poor candidate for a hero. Juliet proves to be more innocent than Romeo because she possesses more rigorous moral ethics. Juliet is also more successful in overcoming the obstacles that she is faced with throughout the play. While both characters
