It is known that Shakespeare has written very influential pieces of literature throughout his life. His amazing ability to write stories that cross all social lines and statuses make him so likable and relatable. He also pushed literary boundaries that were considered taboo or unacceptable at the time. Throughout his novel Romeo And Juliet, he shows the downfall of two lovers who's death is pinned on several key characters, but the real perpetrators are in the eye of the beholder. Firstly, the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet brings about guilt amongst the parents of both Romeo and Juliet. Lord Montague believes it his fault as he clearly states, "O thou untaught! what manners is in this? To press before thy father to a grave?" In translation,
The ideology that everything in the universe has a specific place and rank in order of their hierarchy importance created by God is known as the concept of The Great Chain of Being. The order of this concept consisted levels according to highest rank to the lowest accordingly: God, angels, humanity, animals, vegetation life, leading all the way down to crud. Within each category, more specific classification existed, placing these subcategories in a specific order. This concept was believed to be a way to keep the universe in order. As this was believed during Elizabethan times, William Shakespeare also believed in the Great Chain of Being, as many of his plays are prominently based on this concept. Some of his plays include characters that accept their place on the Chain, but others are not so complacent. By examining three different characters from Shakespeare’s tragedies, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Tragedy of King Lear, it is obvious to readers who is content with their place on the Chain and which characters have a difficult time accepting their place. Romeo and Juliet do not obey their parents’ orders, therefore suffer harsh consequences towards the end of the play. Macbeth is another Shakespearean character that violates the Chain, due to the committing of several murders, in order to gain the throne. In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations in Romeo and Juliet through various language techniques and structure. Romeo and Juliet were star-crossed lovers. Both Romeo and Juliet were from feuding families that would not approve of their marriage. In the play they are presented with many difficult circumstances. The play was set in the Elizabethan era; there was a significant change in religion, family and politics. Attitudes and key scenes highlight the theme of love in difficult circumstances and prepare the audience for Romeo and Juliet’s suicides at the end of the play. In this essay I will be exploring the ways Shakespeare presents characters in difficult situations.
Most people know Shakespeare for his famous play, Romeo and Juliet in which is a tragic story about two decedents from ongoing feuding noble families. In this play, the two lovers (Romeo and Juliet) meet causing more disturbance between the two families which lead to Romeo and Juliet’s tragic death. Their deaths are caused by three main characters, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Friar Lawrence by inducing more disruption than they could handle.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ends in tragedy, because of some of Romeo and Juliet’s faults. Romeo and Juliet obviously rush into things. They do not listen to the advice of Friar Lawrence and end up paying the ultimate price. They also ignore the obvious factors that prohibit Romeo and Juliet from ever being happy together. Romeo and Juliet are also very immature and are groomed for social disaster. Romeo and Juliet are also not in love, but in lust. The combination of impatience, immaturity, and ignoring other’s advice leads to the tragedy of these two “star-crossed lovers.”
In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, we learn of the many hardships and highs Romeo and Juliet go through over the course of the story. The play Romeo and Juliet is based off two star-crossed lovers who are separated from each other due to a feud between their two families. Their love is so strong that at the end of the story Romeo and Juliet both end up committing suicide because they can’t live without each other. Whether it is problems with love, or them complimenting each other on how they feel about the other person, Shakespeare uses many literary devices to make the reader dig deeper into the context to find the meaning behind the sentence. Some of the literary devices are; similes, metaphors, and personification.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” is the question we hear so many times as children. Yet, growing up does not necessarily mean becoming an adult. Rather, growing up is the change within one’s self that is illustrated by a heightened awareness, the ability to think reasonably, and the proficiency to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. In adolescence, we turn to the adults in our lives to aid us in understanding our choices as we become increasingly responsible for our own actions. During this time in our lives, adults with worldly experience direct us down the path of good judgment in order that we may learn how to make good decisions. They near essential to us, even though not everyone has this advantage. William Shakespeare’s famous and celebrated tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, depicts several instances in which the title characters, though still naïve, behave more responsibly and maturely than the misguided adult figures in their lives–those of the Houses of Capulet and Montague, especially Juliet’s parents, and the culpable Friar Laurence.
In the play ‘‘Romeo and Juliet’’ there is a lot of scenarios that could be held responsible for the downfall of the two lovers Romeo and Juliet. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet go through a lot to be together, even though it doesn’t work out in the end due to the risk of what Romeo and Juliet are trying to accomplish. There is a lot of people that could be to blame like the Capulets and how they throw Juliet’s feelings to the side or Friar Lawrence for being irresponsible or simply just Romeo and Juliet’s fault for letting themselves get blinded by love and not think straight.
In the well known tragedy by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet , two teenagers from opposing families have “fallen in love”. They quickly and irrationally get married by Friar Lawrence, who is a trusted adviser to the both of them. Everything is working fine until Romeo and Juliet's cousin fight, and Tybalt dies. Juliet is grieving over Tybalt's death, but even more disturbed by Romeo’s banishment. After being secretly marrying Romeo and him gone, her parents tell her to marry Paris, in attempt to regain happiness in the family once again. After being counseled by the Friar, Juliet decides to fake her death. Romeo does not receive the message explaining this, and quickly rushes to Juliet’s tomb. He is grief stricken, and does
“I do protest I never injured thee But love thee better than thou canst devise Till thou shalt know the reason of my love. And so, good Capulet, which name I tender As dearly as my own, be satisfied.” (Act 5 Scene 1) Romeo refuses to fight Tybalt because he's just married to Juliet, Tybalt's cousin. According to Tybalt, Romeo has dishonoured himself by refusing to fight.
The quote from It's Not My Fault: The No-Excuse Plan for Overcoming Life's Obstacles, explains that," We live in a culture of blame. People will blame anyone or anything for their misery sooner than take the responsibility to own it and make it better." The authors, Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr John Townsend, argument is an accurate representation of society because in society today a lot of people are willing to deal blame, but very few will take it. Blame is when a person assigned fault to another person. People resort to blame because they do not want to be at fault for the bad situation. In the story, blame from multiple people resulted in tragedy. Romeo and Juliet are both dead and the main reason the tragedy happened was because of Capulet and Tybalt.
Romeo and Juliet, a tragic love story involving two teens who claim to be in love. Excuses are something people use to clear themselves or another for their own idiotic actions. In Romeo and Juliet, it is not just fate, but impulsive and downright desperate actions that cause the downfall of Romeo and Juliet. In the Victorian Era, fate was known as the development of events out of one’s control. This was by no means the cause of Romeo and Juliet’s demise.
As a freshman at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI, I took the writing class WTNG 102 Section 31, taught by Professor Ramey. All undergraduate students must receive at least a 70 as a final grade in the class prior to being enrolled in Critical Writing, WTNG 200 or 220. Entering college, I was most worried about taking Expository Writing because writing has never been one of my strengths. I have always struggled with writing transitions, and have made endless grammatical mistakes, including comma splices and tense changes. I hoped that Expository Writing would help me with these writing mistakes. Another thing that I hoped that WTNG 102 would do for my writing is that it would… Over the semester, I wrote a total of four papers with three different learning objectives and specific understandings. The first paper, “The Real Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” shows my understanding of rhetorical knowledge. The second paper, “What is a Discourse Community?” shows my understanding of discourse community knowledge. The third paper, “Genre Analysis” shows my understanding of genre knowledge. Through these three papers, I have achieved the learning outcomes in rhetorical knowledge, discourse community knowledge, and genre knowledge.
Romeo, a charming young man from Verona, falls in love with a sweet girl named Juliet. However, Romeo sabotages his relationship with his own actions, which reflect on his personality. These actions fuel the main plot of the play, and lead to its sad, tragic ending. Romeo is an important character in the play because of his impulsive decisions, his addiction to love, and how he doesn’t change throughout the play.
“It’s not meant to be like this, not what I planned at all, I don’t want to feel like this, yeah, I feel a weakness coming on.” When Heap sings, “ I feel a weakness coming on” this relates to how Juliet is inexperienced to love and instantly agrees to whatever idea he presents to her regardless if it is impulsive or not. Just like this song called “The Walk” by Imogen Heap Juliet’s innocence causes her to make inconsistent decisions when she’s with her love Romeo.
Romeo is primarily at fault because of his lack of judgement and his inadequate reasoning skills. If he had not been impulsive and taken his life, then Juliet would have lived. Heedless reasoning and the desire for love hinder Romeo’s judgment and lead to his and juliet’s demise; this theme is illustrated in the following events: Romeo’s instantaneous marriage to Juliet, and his decision to take the poison that would stop his heart. He placed little value on his own life, and took no time to consider how many people would be affected because of his actions.
