Good afternoon Anthony, it was great reconnecting with you this morning. When Melissa asked if I knew Rosalinda I said yes because I remembered the name, but could not place her until after the call. Of course I remember Rosalinda, while at IDRA we did a lot of work with her in San Marcos ISD and Texas State University. That was a fun time for me since I got to work very closely with teachers in the classroom. I also enjoyed working the Transition to Teaching teachers very much under Linda’s direction. Nobody should go through what I have been through. I’m Dora Rivkina. I am 19 years old and am the second out of three girls to be born into a Jewish family. My sister Liesl is three years older than me. I look up to Liesl. She is my role modle. There is no movie star or pop star that can ever top her. My sister Elaine is two years younger than me. Sheis still learning to speak German because my parents tought her how to speak English first. She looks up to liesl also. We act like liesl and try to dress like her. Both of my sisters are really smart and are good at figuring things out.
Challenges Faced by Hispanic Students in American Schools and How Schools Can Address Identified Needs
In the autobiography we are told an account by Rosa Cassettari an Italian immigrant coming to the United States. Rosa is from northern Italy and is coming to America to join her husband Santino who works in Missouri as an iron miner. She reluctantly leaves behind her young son, but is curious about American life. Her journey to America, her move to Chicago, and her job at the settlement all revealed changes that occurred in Rosa. Her story was successful, not based on the amount of money she made, but in being able to establish a good life for herself in America where she had her freedom.
Buenrostro emphasized the idea of Latino children being the majority ethnicity population attending K-12th California public schools. Documenting his research process Buenrostro demonstrated many statistics on school enrollment and challenging academic performance that Latino students from grades K-6th are facing. Buenrostro ultimately concludes that the results provided in this factsheet will help school districts and board members take action and come up with an idea on what can be improved in order to help these particular students succeed and obtain necessary resources. Ultimately, this fact sheet represents an important contribution to my research topic because it addresses numerous ideas about the education system in Latino students.

Promoting school-community relations with Hispanic parents begins with identifying the barrier that prevents involvement or engagement is school issues. Those issues can include lack of knowledge on American schooling, transportation issues, limited English spoken, or problems with work or childcare availability. Once these barriers can be broken, an aggressive approach can be initiated to close the academic gaps many English Language Learners are facing. The Hispanic population is one of the fastest-growing minority populations in the United States. Despite their growing number and the great strides taken to narrow the academic gap, students learning English as a second language remain among the most educationally disadvantaged groups in the country. Madrid states that, “poor academic achievement of Latino students is indicative of a complex, multifaceted problem that must be addressed because as the Latino student population continues to grow, their poor achievement especially in mathematics and reading has significant implications not only for California’s public educational system, but also for the state’s and nation’s social, political, and economic future.”(2011). Schools across the country, both those that have served Hispanic students for many years and those that have new and growing populations, must take steps to improve the likelihood that Hispanic students reach the same high standards expected of all students.
To that end, the audience that would gain from an article of this caliber, would consist of several individuals, because of the nature of their jobs. These types of services might be of special interest to the LEALES members considering, that Latino students because of their racial and socio-economic background tend to come largely from under-resourced, understaffed, underperforming, and inadequately funded schools. (Saenz & Ponjuan, 2009) This often means that the teachers at the schools were underprepared and had a high turnover rate. This might be one of the reasons that 41% of Latino students require remediation courses and only 13% of Hispanics met the ACT readiness benchmark for all 4 subjects: English, reading, math, and science. (National Conference of State Legislators, n.d.) Therefore, the tutoring services might be very beneficial to some LEALES members. Additionally, as first-generation college students LEALES members are also more likely to lack study and time management skill (Engle, Bermeo, & O 'Brien, 2006), something which LARC could also help address.
To ensure that the outreach and engagement programs reach families that do not speak English at home, San Antonio provides applications and publicity for pre-K 4 SA in multiple languages. The current study is examining the challenges and resiliencies of Latino immigrant parents. This study will be using a qualitative research design. This qualitative design will be accomplished through the use of face to face and phone interviews. This current study seeks to answer the following questions: What parental challenges do Latino immigrant parents face? What resiliencies do Latino immigrant parents obtain? What resources/services do Latino immigrant parents feel they need? What parenting skills, styles, and/or knowledge have Latino immigrant parents used and were they effective in producing positive child outcomes?
