Explain the functional differences between a regulatory agency, such as a board of nursing (BON), and a professional nursing organization (PNO) as it pertains to your professional nursing practice.

A regulatory agency – in this case, a board of nursing (BON) – is a governmental agency. A board of nursing exists on the state level. The primary purpose of a BON is to protect the public’s health and welfare by providing oversight over and ensuring the safe practice of nursing; it achieves this by issuing nursing licenses and monitoring licensees’ compliance to state laws. By contrast, a professional nursing organization (PNO) is an association that represents varying types of nurses and nursing backgrounds. The reach of these can be statewide (such as the Washington State Nurses Association), national (such as the Society of Pediatric Nurses), or even international (for example, the International Association for Human Caring). A PNO serves many purposes for the professional nurse. For one, it allows the nurse to stay informed. Many PNOs provide avenues to stay up-to-date with important issues in the field of nursing, and gives the nurse ways to become a political voice pertaining to issues that directly affect one’s professional life. PNOs further education by compiling newsletters and journals with the latest research in nursing, which allows a nurse to acquire current nursing knowledge and permit them to stay on the cutting edge of the profession. PNOs often provide opportunities for their members to earn continuing education credits, usually at a discount (Ray, 2014). Another purpose for PNOs is networking, by providing nurses with a sense of community and belonging by fostering supportive peer relationships (Ray, 2014).
