Entrepreneurship 2 The new business environment that will manifest in the upcoming years will be shaped by efforts to remain sustainable. This will include reducing energy usage, minimizing waste, making better use of land and development, designing and manufacturing products differently, transportation, and social sustainability issues (RILA, 2012). Wal-Mart has already begun to tackle such issues. A challenge was instituted on October 24, 2005 to Wal-Mart by the former CEO, Lee Scott, which called for the organization to embrace a sustainability program. This program included three aspirational goals (Wal-Mart Corporate): Be supplied by 100 percent by renewable energy Create zero waste Sell products that sustain people and the environment Some of the world's largest retail organizations were rated on sustainability index which produced the follow results (GreenBiz, 2010): Wal-Mart Sustainability SWOT Strengths Wal-Mart is a pioneer in efficiency with advanced information and logistical systems. It has been focusing on reducing energy requirements for many years and has significantly reduced its energy demands. Weaknesses - Wal-Mart's has one of the most advanced supply chains on the planet however it is heavily dependent on fossil fuels to power this network.
