Every day, thousands of individuals fall victim to motor vehicle accidents and obtain serious injuries. But in regards to innovations such as seat belts and airbags, this number has decreased. Safety innovations have changed throughout history. In the 1930’s, individuals were required to wear safety glasses in their vehicles, in the late 1950’s, occupants were allowed to choose whether they wanted headrests on the front seats, which we know understand to be a crucial part of a car as it prevents whiplash. More recently there have been new innovations such as tire pressure monitors and traction control which further contributes to reducing the number of roadside accidents. However, it is clear that there is still a large area for improvement.
Normal accidents are very closely linked to risk society. As our culture takes on new, more advanced technologies and
The 1940s was a time of war and technology. Some of the technologies were used for the war, for example the atomic bomb, and the Willy Jeep. The Second World War led to other wars, like the Cold War, and the Korean War. During the War or during the 1940s FDR was president. FDR tried to be neutral, but that didn’t happen. We sent over 12.2M soldiers in WW2 and 407,316 died, 671,278 were wounded(nationalww2museum).
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), “in 2015, seat belt use in passenger vehicles saved an estimated 13,941 lives” (1). The NHTSA goes on to say that almost 30 million Americans still don’t use seat belts on a daily basis. Since vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in the United States and even the world, the argument to improve seat belt technology has increased dramatically. Researchers are often more concerned with whether or not people are wearing their seat belts, not the effectiveness of them, until now, although both are incredibly important. Seat belt safety, which is directly related to seat belt technology, has been shown to be increasingly ineffective because of the high severity
Automobiles have been around for over a century. They help people get around town as technology improves over the years. Now with better fuel economy, we are excited to be driving around for many miles over the road. Although many of our cars have change overtime, the one thing that has never change is the seat belt that’s near our car doors. Whenever you get in any car on the road, its important that we depend on people to wear seat belts. Seat Belts are the ones we must wear before we head out on our cars. Its protect drivers from injuries sustain from crashes. Seat Belt inspire many states laws in America, but sometimes not all seat belt laws are mandatory. Only one state in the United States didn’t have any seat belts laws at all with the exception of the booster seat law. Anytime we get in our car, we always depend on seat belts to protect drivers from serious injuries or
Seat belts worn correctly can reduce the chances of death in a collision by 47% and the chances of serious injury by 52% (Stewart et al., 1997). All new vehicles sold in Canada today are equipped with three-point seat belts in all positions. Many vehicles are also equipped with seat belt pretensioners,
Automobile accidents are terrible things to be involved in, even if they are minor fender benders, they are still stressful, or at the very least they are extremely annoying. What if the vehicle that you have collided with is a 18 wheeled, 80,000lb contraption of metal, rubber, and cargo? Even a ‘fender bender’ caused by a semi-truck can take the front of your car off completely. They are vital parts of the world’s economy, though they are extremely dangerous when it comes to being in an accident.
As automobile usage increases every year, the subject matter of safety is a crucial aspect that most customers consider before purchasing their vehicles. Consequently, all companies strive to discover innovative safety features to satisfy and entice their consumers, including but not limited to additional airbags, advanced brake systems, and rearview video systems. However, new features such as the “EyeSight Technology” in the Subaru Outback, which is considered a car with numerous protection components, completely overshadow the significance of the original and reliable seat belt (Fuscaldo 4). Because many people praise the latest safety properties, a substantial amount of drivers neglect seat belts and their versatility. Regardless, seat
According to the National Safety Council “2015, was one of the most deadly traffic years since 2007.” In 2009 alone crashes killed over 33,000 people and injured another 2.2 million, and more than 50% of the people killed in those accidents were not wearing seatbelts,
“The research we are doing at Kettering is affecting the national standards in crash safety for children in child seats. Being able to work on a new federal standard is very unique because they don’t change that frequently. Driving can be fun but also very dangerous to people and yourself ” (Brelin-Fornari)” The purpose of this paper is to talk about the importance of vehicular safety through distractions, malfunctions, being under the influence, drowsy driving and environmental factors.
Along with accidents not only comes a little headache or a broken bone, but injuries that stay with you forever such as whiplash and brain damage. Most brain damage incidents occur when you are involved in a side impact collision and the side of your head hits the glass (brain injury). Side impact airbags are just one of the many ways in which this type of life threatening injury can be avoided (whiplash). There is also whiplash, which hurls your head violently, and usually results in long term disability. Since whiplash is so hard to avoid, it can only be avoided by reducing the number of accidents on the streets. Also one of the most painful and most traumatizing injuries that we encounter in accidents are bone fractures, which occur in 65% of all accidents (Bush 11). So in turn by making these cars safer we can all avoid these painful, traumatizing, life-threatening injuries.
Sir Isaac Newton once stated, “I can calculate the motion of heavenly bodies, but not the madness of people,” referring to the ability to prevent accidents from occurring. Throughout my research paper, I will be discussing how the Newton’s Laws of Motion apply to automobiles. I believe this is an extremely interesting and relatable topic because we are at the age where we are beginning to drive without relying on our parents. Although some people may not currently be driving, we have friends or acquaintances who are able to do so and should be informed on how a collision happens and how it affects the vehicle. Additionally, adults nowadays are not serious about driving even though it’s a dangerous process, thus encouraging me to inform people on the subject. We should all be well aware on the issues concerning driving because we all have some sort of interaction with vehicles in our everyday lives. This interaction refers to being the driver of the automobile, the passenger, or the people walking around the vehicle.
SUVs (Sport utility vehichles) are, nowadays, generally acknowledged as a road safety concern, considering that their injury-causing potential to pedestrians (Simms and O’Neill, 2005) and to other light passenger vehicles when in collision (Gabler and Hollowell, 1998) and their propensity to rollover (Keall, 1998). However, comparatively, SUVs have a low risk to cause driver fatal injury except for rollover crashes. To find out whether SUVs are dangerous or not, Michael D. Keall and Stuart Newstead decided to conduct this study in order to evaluate the effect on road safety of SUVs compared to other passenger vehicle types.
Each time you step into a car your life is on the line. While you may be the best driver you know, you cannot trust that those around are taking all precautions to avoid an accident. From those aged 1-54 years old, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death (“Motor Vehicle Safety”). By following the law of wearing your seat belt, no matter the distance of your drive, you can reduce your risk of injury or even death by about 50% (“Motor Vehicle Safety”). Nonetheless, by reminding your passengers and yourself that two seconds of clicking in the restraints could save your life, your vehicle becomes a safer unit on the roads. Awareness is important when it comes to the risks associated with not wearing a seat belt: accidents do not only happen for other people, each driver must believe it can happen to them too. Too often people are caught with the idea that because they are a “safe” driver, they are not threatened by car accidents, but this behavior needs to be stopped. Seatbelts were made for a reason: to protect drivers and passengers on the roads. Due to their effectiveness and success, seat belts should be worn by all passengers above the booster seat age in a moving vehicle.
Today, seatbelts are an accepted part of routine vehicle operation for millions of drivers and passengers. But the modern three-point automotive seatbelt has only been around since 1959 - and it’s saved thousands of lives since it’s introduction.(seatbelts and car safety) Initially people may find seatbelts uncomfortable, confining or inconvenient simply because they’re not used to wearing them. Those people who have made buckling up a habit can testify that once their use does become a habit, there is no discomfort or inconvenience. It can’t be overemphasized that the seriou discomfort and inconvenience of motor vehicle crash injury in no way compares to the imaginary discomfort or the inconvenience you may think you
INTRODUCTIONThere have been a tremendous amount of car accidents which occur in the United States, these accidents may result in injuries and sometimes serious enough that the people aren’t walking away from them, auto makers are doing enough to increase safety for the future of cars.
